I don't hear  exciting jazz, folk, classical rock music. It's just pop rock and metal. They are probably 20% prog only because they have some odd time signatures. Progressive is just a word, it doesn't describe true prog rock. I think modern so called progressive rock should have a different name, because I don't like the idea of tool being lumped next to gentle giant. I find it embarrasing

Embarrassing for you maybe.

You have to expand your boundaries a little bit.

I like all the classic prog bands but it's all been done before,I need to hear something fresh.

And why does everyone pick on Tool?

Come on, you should know his shtick already.  He'll just say you have bad tastes and then praises a random 70's band.

I'm not narrow minded. My limits are higher. Obviously you like some less exciting music, but I need to be excited when I hear music. I only like the very best and if it isnt awesome, I won't bother. I wouldn't care if there were no bands today. It's hard to find anything exceptional today. Niacin are a very good start though. I think modern fusion is the way to go if anything

here are the bands I'm into

Tull
Gentle Giant
Camel
YES
Genesis
Rush
Purple
Sabbath
Crimson
Zappa

I'm also a fan of
zeppelin
floyd
elp
cream
hendrix
doors
caravan
mahavishnu
goblin
supertramp
niacin
devo
UK
hatfield and the north
dixie dregs
and more

I'm also into some Jimmy Smith. My dad got me into some of this music because he owns hammond, rhodes and moog and I was brought up listening to it. So I was advanced at a young age listening to fusion and prog. I really like the sound of egg and National health too. But I still think modern prog is mediocre or poor

Have you listened to any Post Rock/Experimental stuff? If you can put on a GY!BE or Sigur Ros album like F#A# OO or () and say that that new music is crap( ), then you clearly are a w**ker as the Disgustipated man from Australia says, and are very narrow minded.
For example, I don't like Dream Theater at all, but I'm trying to be open-minded and find something in it as a lot of people seem to do on this site. As a matter of fact I'm listening to The Root Of All Evil right now!!!

Seriously, you should check out Arena.

'Contagion' is their best album followed by The Visitor.

If you don't like this, it's hopeless for you.

do you enjoy Van Der Graaf Generator, gentletull? Or would that also be classified as "crap"?

I want to check out more vander graaf. But I'm saying that the modern prog bands I've heard so far are mediocre at best. Sorry to say . I can categorise Wobbler differently though, because they sounded good, but they lose half their points for pretty much copying old bands :)

Come on GT !

You can't say that modern prog is crap, while you listen to Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Cream, ... ,Come on! . You're saying that you have higher limits!?  Those Bands Mei mentioned doesn't even comes close to the level of music that PT or Tool have. The others, i accept that many of them are brilliant, and in my opinion the music quality than PT or Tool, but just for that U can't say that modern prog is crap, and PT and Tool also they're very good. Listen to Sigur Ros,TMV, Flower Kings, DT, Planet X, Glass Hammer,God Speed You! Black Emperor, and others, and you'll find groups that has as good quality as the others you mentioned.

Sorry for saying this, but if you're a Cream fan (and i'm not saying they suck, 'cause they don't) your satndarts in fact are lower than PT's fans

Wheels of fire was way better than any Tool album I listened to. This is an album from 1968 which is years before it's time and I still find it more interesting than modern music. Tool can be as talented as they want, but they don't have the most important talent of writing consistently great pieces of music and I have to say Maynards vocals are very poor. Jack Bruce is alot smarter than Tool. Honestly, I thought Laterus was an album for 16 year olds. It was so mediocre that I thought Intermission was the best song. But I've heard 1000s of better instrumentals than Intermission :)

To be honest ... I find Contagion a little bit boring. It's still a solid 4 star album though.

I'm wondering why you added Niacin to that list of 70s/80s bands ... as an "alibi" band maybe, so that nobody can accuse you of being narrow minded?

They're good - but not particularly inventive. I really like their album "High Bias".

Listen to the new Mike Keneally albums - Dog, Wooden Smoke or The Universe Will Provide. Then tell me that "new prog sucks".

I also like Opeths slower songs. They have the Camel/Crimson feel to them. But their heavy stuff sounds a bit like Metallica. YAWN :)

You're not only narrow-minded - you're also quite "shallow". Comparing Opeth to Metallica is the silliest thing that I've heard in this forum ... at least for a while.

Off topic posts far outweigh the on-topic ones and I was never really happy with the title.
