Thats not true I know older people who grew up in love with the progressive rock of the 70's and fancy the newer Prog better.In fact of those people's FAVORITE band happens coincidentally to be Porcupine Tree.

By the test of time: in 20 years time from now, after having hear thousands more prog records (provided you are still into prog) , will you still think this album is still so great or will you be embarassed just thinking you loved that album and that you were so wrong at the time? Remember that by that time you will have heard all kinds of prog albums that may have influenced artistically the album at stake.
There is no possible answer to this, today.....  New albums should be at least a few years old before entering the possible masterpieces category.
Believe this old crusty proghead (who called masterpieces in his youth albums that he now considers as dipensible records), calling an album a masterpiece should rightly be rare

just to throw this out as a question to you sean. I personally think De-loused is a better and more complete album. It is older too. It is almost officially 5 years old. And it is in the rather look-down upon "Top Prog 100" list. Is this album allowed to be a masterpiece yet?
I certainly think it is, the only arguements I can think of are you not liking it and the fact that it's a debut. But hey look at ITCOTCK.
Just want your opinion--how much longer does this one have to be around to be a masterpiece (if i sound provocative i don't mean it. i always come across that way for some reason. i am not making a point i'm innocently asking a question)

Well I would say, (but this is just me of course) that they can be considered by now to masterpiece contender and pass in the anti-chamber of candidates still fighting to get a 1% shot at having a chance to cosy up with Thick as A brick as a masterpiece

Hierophant - Come on, at their best Jethro Tull are beyond awesome. Defnitely in the top five prog bands of all time for me, maybe even in the top three. Besides, Ian Anderson is one of the few music lyricists I am familiar with that really can write, and not just build metaphors that look ambitious, but reveal to be ill-constructed, simplistic or just plain used-up upon closer inspection.
His only failure is that even with this talent, Ian Anderson has obviously failed to teach some of his fans certain features of the grammar of the English language (their own language, actually), quite basic features at that. Maybe it's time to see the light and transpose some of the thoughtfullness of JT's music onto one's life. I don't think Ian Anderson would mind...

I'm 20, born in 1985, so i can be considered young, and i love jethro tull, i don't have words to explain how amazed i was (and still are) when i first listened to JT. Their simply genious, and thick as a brick is... wooow, also songs from the wood, and i've never been even close to say that music from the 70's is crap, in fact i respect them a lot for being the pioneers of the genre and for their geniality. I love a lot of band's from 70's, but also i listen to new groups. Honestly, i don't know if old prog is better than the new one, or the other way, but i find (in quality of music terms) as good pieces now as i find from 70's, also i don't think you either are in conditions to say wether 70's prog is better or not, so don't be arrogant.
I think there are a lot prog fans that have around my age that think the same way i think, so don't put all of us in the same bag, 'cause that's nothing but ignorance.

That's not a list, my friend... They are only "examples"... 
And, yeah, in 20 years time (or much more!), I think those (and others) will still be masterpieces!!!!! 
Minor works? Things like "Subterranea" or "Ever"? 
Obviosuly, When I said "masterpiece" it wasn't in a strictly form (like only music like Mozart or Beethoven are...)
- Another one: What's exactly an "older proghead"? 
I'm 34. What do U think: Am I "very young to rock and roll, very old to die?".
Prog is not = old.
And I've got (and heard) thousands of CDs, mp3, and videos (official and bootlegs). Since 1960's (for example: The Nice) to 2006 (The Tengent) .And I've gone to every show of prog music (or related) that I've been noticed (since my 11 years old!). I play some things of this genre in a few bands.
It's a sin to like "The lamb" and "Counterparts", at the same time?  I SAY NO! 
Thank's for the list (really!), but is not necessary. 
There are is top 100 list of "masterpieces" for every prog fan. Older or Newbie. Classic, Neo, Art Rock, AOR, or what you want. 
Just, don't label it.

I still don't think modern prog should be mentioned in the same group as old prog. Completely different music. I can't see how bands like tool and porcupine are even called prog. I don't hear exciting jazz, folk, classical rock music. It's just pop rock and metal. They are probably 20% prog only because they have some odd time signatures. Progressive is just a word, it doesn't describe true prog rock. I think modern so called progressive rock should have a different name, because I don't like the idea of tool being lumped next to gentle giant. I find it embarrasing

You have to expand your boundaries a little bit.
I like all the classic prog bands but it's all been done before,I need to hear something fresh.

my mate at my old job knew i was into prog and he used to play music on a stereo while he worked. The music sounded sh*t. All the time I would be thinking this sucks. Disgraceful vocals. Then one day I said what do Tool sound like and he said, this is them playing on the stero and I thought. Jesus lol
