Moving on means nothing if you don't enjoy what you listen to. I'm sick of people of any age saying something to the effect that "Your musical taste is obviously inferior to mine because you're stuck living in the past while I'm moving on" and vice versa. It really doesn't matter. If GT wants to listen to old music and you want to listen to new, then fine. if you find old bands to be broing and want to listen to "music" by TMV and such bands (<--- biased, I know), then you can. Berating others for what they lisen to is ignorant and stupid. Disregard that last statement if they like non-prog bands. |

just to throw this out as a question to you sean. I personally think De-loused is a better and more complete album. It is older too. It is almost officially 5 years old. And it is in the rather look-down upon "Top Prog 100" list. Is this album allowed to be a masterpiece yet? I certainly think it is, the only arguements I can think of are you not liking it and the fact that it's a debut. But hey look at ITCOTCK. Just want your opinion--how much longer does this one have to be around to be a masterpiece (if i sound provocative i don't mean it. i always come across that way for some reason. i am not making a point i'm innocently asking a question) |

The only people who like modern stuff more than old stuuf are the ones who have been brought up with new stuff. But with enough listening they will see the light and realise old stuff is best :D |

modern music is just as likely to be classic as older music. i highly respect older music because without it we'd have no modern music, or not as of high quality. and i might add--to those that were brought up with older music they like it better, but those with modern don't neccesarily...get it? it works both ways. if you don't think you like ALL MODERN MUSIC AVAILIBLE EVER than i think you're souless |

Who knows, but why worry about it. Bands like The Mars Volta and TOOL are bright lights in the pulsating artery that is mainstream rock, and we, their fans, are better for it. De-loused simply whomped me the first time I heard it, and I must say I certainly don't force myself to like anything! _____________________________________________ http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZnicedreemzQQhtZ-1QQfrppZ50Q QfsopZ1QQfsooZ1QQrdZ0 |

I sometimes force myself to like something and end up loving it! I hated De-loused the first time I've heard it, but forced myself to listen a few more times and eventually loved it. Now they're my favorite modern band after DT. |

ouch.... but then again what did I expect with a thread title like that.... then again... collect the great... and I do mean GREAT Italian 70's prog and collect the best of modern prog (though a bit more.... carefully). Porcupine Tree gets a big from Micky for what's it's worth, and I'm as harsh as anyone on the modern stuff. |

neither do i. i was just wondering if de-loused had more potential to be the "masterpiece" of they two albums. personally i don't think we can define the true masterpiece of the band until they've run out of albums. a band can have more than one masterpiece but it is rare in my opinion. there are albums that are neccesary and amazing like FTM, but if you haven't heard De-loused too than you're missing out. |

They're both great, but for the moment I think I do prefer De-loused. Yes, it's "less weird" but it's also because it was such a stunning debut and it's lost none of its power. _____________________________________________ http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZnicedreemzQQhtZ-1QQfrppZ50Q QfsopZ1QQfsooZ1QQrdZ0 |

see to me that's not really forcing. that's havign an open mind. i hated de-loused at first too. but i have this policy of listening to all albums 3 times until i deem them crap. AT LEAST 3 times. and approach albums TRYINGto like them not trying to dislike them from what you've heard. i'm very glad you and I gave the mars volta second and third chances. it was a new sound and we both ended up loving it. it's too bad other people have trouble with this... |

exactly. which is why, if either of the two realsed albums (new one due VERY soon---march-april area last i checked ) were to be called a "masterpiece" I'd vote De-loused. |

That's another way of putting it. Basically, you are forcing yourself to listen to an album you don't (yet) like. This far, there isn't a single CD that hasn't eventually grown on me. I give it as many tries as it takes. SFAM, for example, took about 8 listens to realize it's a masterpiece De-loused - 4. Most good prog takes a few listens to get into, and I don't expect for it to be otherwise. If I put an album I disliked at the first listen I would've missed out on DT, TMV, PF, PoS, Yes, and GG to name a few. Frances was easier to acquire, probably because I was familiar with the style and knew what to expect. Edited by The Miracle |

unfortunately for me scenes and almost all dream theater grew OFF of me... i used to love them to deaeth... now i can't stand to listen to a full length all the way through unless it's Train of Thought... and i've tried countless times. i'm still loss as to what happened. one day i loved them. then i woke up the next day, put 'em on and decided i didn't love them so much. or at all and that they were suffering from lack of emotion...their music had quit making me feel... my loss i suppose. |

... Opposite for me, SymX doesn't move me nearly as much as DT, still a good band though. I think you will like PoS (if you don't already) because they're very emotional, as much as TMV for sure. |

I'm not saying either band has more intelligence behind its music and lyrics but TOOL has quite a bit of knowledge behind their music(Jungian Theory,Ancient Geometry etc...). And since when did Music have a Class System?? |
