it's a case of knowing the genre and the bands within it.  to be flippant enough to disregard it because of one song or one band is pretty pathetic.  it's much like people disliking prog because they heard one dream theater tune or something like that.

each of those genres have their merits and sometimes you have to dig deeper to understand the music.  there is a lot more to rap than eminem and a lot more to country and western (a layman term as I don't believe it's called than in the states as there are many sub-genres of country, like bluegrass) than billy ray cyrus.  sometyimes it's the bands that you don't hear about that are the best, the more undiscovered or onlyknown within a scene bands that are the best in the genre.

Many people bash Musical, but some musicals are actually quite innovative. Westside Story and Evita come to my mind.

Opera: I really like any Mozart opera, and also modern operas like Porgy & Bess.

Great post, Spectral. I'd only like to point out that with some genres, like rap, it's almost always  the best bands are the ones that you never hear about.

The more popular the genre, the harder it is to find the good bands. In prog, I find it particularly hard with prog metal. People are instantly associating it with Dream Theater ...

Too true!  Which is probably why rap has a bad reputation outside of the urban music world.

I voted rap, but where's techno? Ow sorry, that isn't even a music genre... Can't be tolerated as one...

Ow and by the way, anyone know a music genre called disco-polo (a polish one)? THIS is something I hate almoust as much as techno. I'll try and get some link for You guy's to download... If You'd understand polish then You'd have a even bigger laugh... bout the lyrics...

You sure did, but it got trampled under the 102 votes against rap...

I don't see how rap is a bad genre of music. A DJ's job is to mix, much like any producer. And it's not uncommon to find rap lyrics with a lot of depth.

The only genres of music that I truly believe are bad are:

Bubblegum/Teen Pop

Grindcore/Grind Metal

House Music

Hardcore

Aside from that, all music has the potential to be good.

Life seemed to him merely like a gallery of how to be.

I'll just say Easy Listening, because it's opposed to Difficult Listening, which is the music I most respect

Punk.

It has paid such ghastly tribute to the world of music, I'm literally appalled.

Emo/Punk/Screamo whatever it is, is terrible, and its everywhere. I've yet to find a local band that doesn't have one of these labels attached to thier music. And I'm the only one my age in my area that doesn't listen to this crap. Its very frustrating.

Im very glad that rap is winning. I sometimes don't even consider
commercial rap (50 cent, jay z, dmx...) music. I like to call it "entertainment"
since there is generally no passion and the lyrics are always negative (of
course there are a few exceptions in the commercial world, but not many.)
Rap makes up most of the radio and the music on television and it is a bad
influence on a lot of people.

But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises

So what about the rap that is used by Korn and other such bands?

Also, there is a rap band called Dalek who I gather have progressive tendancies.

Also, there was Public Enemy too.

Having said this, I do not like Rap either, but I am just saying there are other types of rap music out there, it isn't all Pop-rap, so to speak.

Remember that rap originated from Rocksteady and Ska as far as I know.

I have to say screamo and grindcore are pretty bad, but I did hear a very progressive grindcore band once and if it wasn't for the shouty lyrics, they would have been even better.  It was more instrumental stuff with the occasional grindcore shouting really.

My mate and his band have just released an album of about 6 or 7 songs and the total length of the album is about 6 minutes or so, urgh, more like an EP to me.  He knows I like prog, so he was having a go at the length of the songs VdGG.  He needs re-educating.

James.
