I will assume Imo=emo.

Here the order:

1. Emo

2. Rap

3. Country

Anything eles is ok to listen to. Not saying ill enjoy it, but ill listen to it.

And big band music (and easy listening) is some good stuff.

Rap and punk are awesome when there' s heart and soul in it. A lot of people forget that rap was actually awesome in the 80s: the group Public Enemy actually did a concept album if I'm not mistaken, and Mike Portnoy actually lists one of their albums as one of his top 20 of all-time on his website , mikeportnoy.com. Today's rap is very little like "classic rap"(?!? that sounded weird)

Country is the most aggravating form of music.....

But let it be said , that I do not include Folk, folk-rock and folk prog in the Country category!

Some rap is ok especially in French rap!

Being raised in south Georgia, I've tolerated country all my life. Along with bluegrass, it's part of the cultural landscape here.

Rap sucks....I hate everything about it! The "music", the lyrics, the lifestyles, etc......hate it all!!

Punk....makes me sick.

Thank God for jazz.....

New Age music. I don't really mean ambient music , but there was a time you had this mindless muzak with some sloppy beat under it.

Although I'm not a superfan, there is some great rap, country, punk and big band music around.

Nickel Creek is a very good band.  I have some of their stuff and enjoy listening to them from time to time.  Most of the popular country these days is pure rubbish though.  It's nothing but pop music with cowboy hats.

I totallly agree....Gretchen Wilson?....blah!!!!!

At least it's "cleaner" than rap lyrics. Around the house, I keep jazz going constantly so that my kids will be exposed to really good music. My daughter also takes piano lessons so hopefully she'll be able to separate the good from bad.

Teen pop music really gets on my nerve. I can't stand it, it really makes me aggresive!  I always get out of my house when my sister put on Avril Lavigne, or anything like that. Seriously.

She do the same when I put on some Can, or Mahavishnu Orchestra, though...

Could you give me a few example groups of this genre, since this is the third time I ask this question in this thread , and I still haven't got an answer. Since you bash emo so much, you must know some example groups.

Thanks.

well, some people just got tired of prog, not everybody wants to listen to a 10 minute keyboard solo you know, some just dont have the patience...it wasnt just punk that killed prog in the 70s...it was also the disco craze which dominated the radio that prog once ruled, AOR that took elements of prog and made them more poppy and accessible for radio, people eventualy became more interested with bands like foreigner and journey than true prog bands, and hard rock bands like AC/DC, aerosmith and van halen who made millions from performing in the same arenas that were once ruled by jethro tull and yes only a few years prior...then theres simply the fact that many of the leading prog bands became washed up in the late 70s....mainly genesis, yes and jethro tull...and finaly, the critics, the critics, the critics.

PS.critics suck.

Rap and Punk suck only if they aren't filled with creativity so is any other music genre but what really gets me angry is psuedo anything like Avril because they are taking the spot of talented people like Elfonia, Ambeon, and any other good band with a female vocalist.

punk has its good qualitys...save all the pop punk crap, i respect punks principles, which really isnt any different than progs principles, its just the approach thats drasticly different, punk has a major influence on metal, alternative rock and grunge...to be fair...not all punk rockers lack skill...tom verlaine was a brillant avant garde guitarist, D.Boon and bob quinn were also very talented punk guitarists.

Id like to put it on the record that there is a HUGE amount of amazing inspired rap. Id consider myself a bit of an underground rap fan. (theres a growing trend in the rap community for artists to label themselves progressive rap if they dont want to be associated with the mainstream , a lot of it is really great stuff). Of genres that I actually consider real, punk and emo are at the bottom, but there is still some awesome stuff in either one.

So least favourite genre eh... (all of these are pseudo genres btw)

new country (we even have a radio station devoted only to new country in ottawa ),  grindcore (well sometimes it makes me laugh ), pretty much all new pop, and i would have said 80's revival indie but im starting to come around to it (the arcade fire and the kaiser chiefs are both really good bands, and franz ferdinad is allright).

I can't believe so many people think rap is the shi t of the earth. their are several kinds of rap and yea i'll agree that some suck, like hip hop for example (50 cent, ja rule etc) but some rappers are actually incredibly talented, im a pretty hardcore progger but at least i can respect the ability of someone to right hundreds of words that flow together (sometimes ryhming) all in one song...plus some french rap belive it  or not have really proggy beats to them. to deny rap of being artistic i think is wrong, these guyz should be respected rather than just downplayed because its a comon sterotype that people who like band music (guitar, drums etc) hate rappers...u dont have to like it but i think that  it should be held in higher regards.

to judge all rap music by what you see on MTV is the same as judging all prog by what you see on MTV (or on classic rock radio for that matter).  there are some amazing indie-hip-hop artists who really push the boundaries of music.  DJ shadow is a good example, having virtually created the genre known as "trip-hop".  there is a hip-hop band in Pittsburgh called BEAM who are completely improvisational.  they never play together except at live shows, where they play turntables, drums, upright bass, effects-laden "space bass", and vocals.  they flow for hours on end.  amazing stuff.  So, granted Ja-rule and p-diddy et al. are all musical trash, there is more out there that even a hardcore progger may enjoy if given the chance.

that said, country sucks.  all of it.

Why the hell did you put Big Band music on the list??
Just last week I've seen 2 concerts of big bands (jazz festival in vancouver at the moment), and they both were totally amazing! Great musicians, very complex structured songs, in fact they seemed quite proggy for most of the time. (the bands were "Bik Bent Braam" from Holland, and "Italian Instabile Orchestra" if anybody's interested...).

you're right, I enjoy Johnny Cash, but I guess I've never lumped him in with country.  He's way too versatile and artistic to be piled in with people whose main artistic objectives are record sales and inspiring a line-dance.  Cash is (was) a genre all his own.  can someone who did such an amazing cover of NIN really be called country?

Emo (an abbreviation of "emotionally-driven Hardcore punk" or just "emotional-hardcore") is a term now broadly used to describe almost any form of guitar-driven alternative rock that expresses emotions beyond traditional punk's limited emotional palette of alienation and rage. It is also used to describe fans of this genre, most commonly teenagers. (e.g., emo kid). The actual term "emo" originated in the mid-1980s D.C. scene, with the band Rites of Spring, as well as bands such as Fugazi, Moss Icon, and Antioch Arrow. The term addressed both the way the band connected with its audience, as well as its tendency to deal more with topics of personal and relationship politics than with the standard themes of rock music.

source: wikipedia

Modern emo bands include AFI, Thursday, My Chemical Romance, Jimmy Eat World, etc.  an "emo kid" is a punk version of a "goth kid".  I am not sure why fugazi is listed as emo, as they are clearly pioneers of the DC punk scene.

What I hate the most is rap, specially some kind of caribean and south american rap called reggaeton, the lyrics are just as stupid as rap and the same go with the life style. but the topics are just denigrant and they make dirty analogies with sex.  It's very popular on caribean and south american countries like venezuela. In Peru a lot of people listen to that but thanks god it isn't THAT popular.

You...like...rap?

Then post your messages in the rap forum then.

I know Im going to take some bashing for this, but is rap even music?

I mean, I respect it as an art form, but when my friends start rapping in the middle of football practice, it hardly seems that such a spontanious event can be music.  Can Emerson start walking down the street and suddenly create music, or Peart play a song while driving down the street?  I know its an unfair line of questioning, but I think it brings up a valid point.

All that being said, even if rap is considered music, I still dislike it.

To the guy who brought up 'classic rap', I totally agree.  While I won't actively listen to it (give me Rush anyday) I don't mind it compared to what I hear from some of my friends.

Rap is the worst of all - I just cannot understand why it's called MUSIC at all.

I voted Easy Listening, by which I mean teen pop and all the crap that infests music charts worldwide. On the other hand, I'd say there may be something good in all the other genres , even though I don't really listen to them. As a rule I don't like punk, but I can't forget very good bands such as Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Stranglers, which started out as punk. I'm not an expert on rap, but I tend to agree with those who have made a distinction between old and new rap.

However, the worst genre ever is, IMO, techno-house-etc - I'd hesitate to call it music!!!

I love country-rock: Gene Clark, The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers and several others so called outlaw country, much better then prog-metal and other sub-forms of so called prog (=sh*t)

I disagree when people say rap. There are some good artists around there, you just have to listen carefully. Anyway, i think the worst to listen is emo, but as i said, there are a couple of good bands inside of this genre, as in every style of music IMHO.

I think we should separate "party music" from the others... Regueton in my opinion is one way to get involved with a girl
