Could be considered progressive the following bands?

1) Ultravox

2) Toto

3) Manowar

4) Scorpions

5) East of Eden

2) Toto - They are just crap IMO.

3) Manowar - Oh good god no...

4) Scorpions - Give me strength

5) East of Eden - Not familiar with them.

I totally agree with Blacksword on 1-4. East of Eden's CD I listened last summer. It was edgy folk-rock with progressive elements. I didn't much enjoy it but it can be considered prog.

Anyway, welcome Kuklops.

NOT PROG. For goodness' sake, have the decency not to mention certain things in public, Blacksword, please, shame on you!!!

2) Toto - They are just crap IMO.

They have one or two more decent tunes that are somewhat proggy, and they're great instrumentalists, but just like Asia and Foreigner, a waste of potential.

3) Manowar - Oh good god no...

HEAVY METAL DAAAAAAZE!!!!!

no, they're not prog, BTW

4) Scorpions - Give me strength... to withstand the Winds of Change

Actually they are said to have been quite good at the beginning, but even then they were simply a hard rock band.

5) East of Eden - Not familiar with them.

IMO prog enough to be here and a very interesting band, too.

toto are definitely not a crap, they are great musicians making great songs and they often used to play as the invited guests with many others (e.g. also progs like gilmour). ultravox was one of a few good new romantic bands (the best being talk talk) and if they had not stopped they could have develop further.

True. Some prog bands are platinum, and some of those who aren't prog can be found wishing they were talented enough to be prog.

I'm not free of sin, though, so I'll admit to being a fan of Manowar's "Master of the Wind" - tune.

No one can withstand the winds of change, blown from the hellish lungs of the mighty metal avenger! Oh good lord, how come I have two Scorpions albums in my collection. It must have happened in one of my taste blackouts, which were quite frequent in the 80's

I am delighted to announce that I have more Ultravox in my collection than Scorpions!

..and only one Manowar album...

I agree with Blacksword, Ultravox is not so bad, I enjoy especially side 1 of "Vienna" and side 1 of "Rage in Eden", their first albums.

What about the first three Ultravox albums? There's a very distinctive feeling around them, like being in the lab of some new romantic mad doctor... Songs like "Hiroshima mon amour" (from Ha! Ha! Ha!, 78, their second album) are quite scary, and John Foxx's way of singing can give you the creeps, too. That's when he's not playing he's Bryan Ferry in a meth power trip.

I also like their later output featuring Midge Ure, but can't prefer it to that early stuff, which has a slightly "progressive" quality, at least due to its experimental aim.

As for Manowar, well, The Triumph Of Steel was a concept album, wasn't it...?

My personal impression:

1)ULTRAVOX- Their sound is a bit prog, for example "Vienna"

2)TOTO- I find some influences of ART rock....they're very good musicians, specially Jeff Porcaro

3)MANOWAR- music minor metal, lyrics "epic"

4)SCORPIONS- hard rock band, sometimes very commercial...but a few ballads seem similar to song by renaissance

5)EAST OF EDEN- I consinder them a true progressive band....their music deals with jazz, classic and esotic sounds

I went to see Manowar in '92 in their Triumph of Steel tour. Hail and Kill .

Forgive me, I was a teenager then .

Does having a concept album automatically make a band progressive?

East of Eden were added to the site recently.

The others listed are generally pop rock bands, perhaps melodic rock.

A couple of tunes in Fly to the rainbow from Scorpions have discreet prog accents, if you admit the term in its more extended definition (including the prog metal scene...)

but for me they play basic hard rock and FM rock!

I listen to the Manowar bass solos for amusement value.

But from the list 1,3 and 4 are really not prog and I haven't heard the other two.

Can anyone recommend some Ultravox albums?
