My preference changes. I would havwe voted Trick without any hesitation a few years back, but I have since re-appraised WAW.
Both are very strong albums, and in some ways WAW is more 'progressive' than ATOTT. It has more 'epic' tracks for a start, but also only has musically weak track IMO (Your own special way) Even the lyrically terrible 'All in a mouses night' is good instrumentally. The production is years ahead of its time and the performances are superb.
ATOTT, is beautifully produced and has this wonderful melancholic and mysterious feel. It also has 'Dance on a volcano' and Los Endos' Two of the greatest Genesis songs of all time
Trick wins, I guess, and gets my vote. Partly because of the respect I have for the band producing such a good album under the pressure of losing Gabriel.

Wind & Wuthering has more Hackett-touch and is IMHO slightly better for that reason. But, yes Blacksword, it makes sense to vote Trick for that pressure thing.

TotT, no doubt. The only post gabriel album that is as brilliant as its predecessors.

I voted WAW only because I dont really like "Your Own Special Way". on
TOTT I was never to fond of "Ripples" and "Squonk". 1 beats 2. I guess
those 2 songs reminded me to much of non-hackett era Genesis. Duke,
Abacab, etc. I Do think that One Of the reasons I picked WAW was
because of the 2 great instrumental tracks,"Wot Gorilla?" and "...In That
Quiet Earth". "Los Endos" off of TOTT is very similar to these I think.

W&W also has "Afterglow", which is one of my favourite Genesis tracks. The second half of the album ("Blood..." onwards) is flawless, but the first half is somewhat inconsistent IMO.
TotT only has one track I dislike, namely the poppy title cut, but the rest are great. Especially "Entangled", which I genuinely believe to be one of the best songs ever written.

WAW would have been flawless IMO if it had not been for 'Your own special way' which I thought was innapropriate for the album, and Wot Gorilla which was a time waster. Steve Hackett had his song 'Please dont touch' rejected by the band. They thought Wot Gorilla was better I guess they were trying to make Hackett quit at that point.
ATOTT could have done without the title track IMO, and I wouldn't have been hearbroken if 'Robbery Assault & Battery' had been left off either. Apart from those weak moments I think both albums are superb.

Both are stunning but I prefer Wind & Wuthering since it's their most atmospheric album ever IMO.

Another one for A TRICK OF THE TAIL
While Wind & Wuthering may have had the best song in between the
two of them (One For The Vine), A Trick of the Tail is overall much
more solid, IMO. Dance On A Volcano, Entangled, Squonk, Mad Man Moon,
Ripples, Los Endos... that's a hard combination to beat.

"Progressive.... yeah, that's it..."

That is definitely one of the most difficult choices I have ever been given. Ultimately, my choice has to be "sentimental" rather than musical, so W&W it is. There is just something about that album - something about the overall "sound" and "feeling" - that sets it apart from every other Genesis album.
Peace.

It is unique in 'sound' and 'feel' as you say. I remember the first time I heard that album I had to double check the date of the release on the sleeve notes. It did not sound like an album produced in 1977!! Way ahead of its time. It's also Tony Banks' finest hour IMO. One for the Vine took him a year to write, and it took me a year to get into. Now when I hear it, it always moves me.

Even if One for the vine and Afterglow are great track, my vot goes for Trick of the tail. I think there's not a weak track, and Mad man moon, Ripples and etangled are fantastic song. WAW is great, but there's too many track I don't care like Wot Gorilla, Your own special way and the instrumental song are just ok...nothing more.

RIGHT!!! Made my mind up!!!! (who cares I hear you cry) Its A Trick Of The Tail for me.....*sings* oh they got no horns and they got no tails, they dont even know of our existence........Think I saw them do that on Top Of THe Pops (did I?) Anyway I think its a far more consistent and atmospheric album.

Blacksword:
I agree re the amazing "sound" of W&W, which they were able to re-produce on most of ATTWT. Indeed, I have noted elsewhere, in reviews and threads, that the overall "sound" that Genesis developed on W&W and ATTWT is among the most influential "sounds" used in neo-prog and later. And it shows up not only in English and American prog (where it is rampant), but across the board - in Italian, Scandinavian, European, even South American prog.
Peace.

Yes I think there was a bit of an argument about what songs to include......The ones that didnt make it ended up on the "Spot the Pigeon" EP. I feel that Inside and out should have been on there tho.

Hardd question for some, but easy for me, lets see the reasons:
- A Trick of the Tail: A very transitional album, very friendly, less atmospheric and mysterious than early Genesis, but closer to Selling England by the Pound which is not one of my favorites. The lyrics are very poetic but somehow remind me of fairy tales, too soft for my taste and Phil tries sohard to sound like Gabriel that annoys me. Good but not excellent.
- Wind & Wuthering: A return to the roots, closer to Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme than to SEBTP or The Lamb (Nothing is close to The Lamb because it's unique in Genesis career), very atmospheric, dark and a bit mysterious, even the lyrics are oriented towards History (Eleventh Earl of Mar), Revolutions (One for the Vine) and Sarcastics like All in a Mouse Night. Steve collaborated with this albums as no other before. Despite Your Own Special Way W&W is almost a Gabriel era album without Gabriel.
So my vote goes for Wind & Wuthering.
