Which Yes album does one purchase next?

yea, i bought Fragile, and i loved it. I bought Close to the Edge, and i almost started crying it was so damn good!

i love this band. very very much. I need to know which album to pick up next, i'm quite interested in tales from Topographic oceans, but i'm not to sure if thats the one i pick up next. help me.

Logically the next album is Topographic Oceans. It would be good if you would listen to them in their correct chronological order because you would appreciate the bands development more. I was too young to appreciate this and listened to Yes back numbers in a haphazard way. Mind you I still went crazy over their music anyway, but when I speak to old proggers they can relate to the time and mood of the movement and have a better understanding of the vibe. There again, we are not in the 70s any more and that 'golden age' / musical philosophy is gone.

Again Topographic feels good to me. The Yes sound hasn't changed much since Close To the Edge,(there is a noticeable gap in production/sound engineering between Fragile and Close to ..)  except for Alan White. It is a bit harder to listen to, because all 4 tracks are 17min+ unlike the previous albums, but it grows on you with repeated listening. Tracks 1, 3 and 4 showcase some of Yes's greatest pieces ever. If anything you can learn the different names of the sun in different languages in track 3 - and it does wonders for your general knowledge.

Wow,lucky you! To be in the process of discovering Yes Music must be very exciting for you.

Probably get The Yes Album next then Going For The One.

Relayer is not really one of my favourites and Topographic Oceans is a big ask for a Yes noobie!

Both Tales as relayer are quite difficult to get. if however that's what your after than go get 'em.

The Yes Album is a save purchase, can't go wrong with that one, some chalenging songs, but not excessivly difficult.

Maybe it is interesting to buy one of their first two albums in time aswell. personally I bought Yesterdays as one of my first albums, a compilation of some of their best songs from their first two albums, that also got me started very well.

 

Ignore every advice and just buy everything from Yes, up ontil 1978

to me, the yes album, fragile and ctte are the triumvirate of great yes albums, not to say that relayer is lacking by any means, but based on your circumstances, the yes album would be a much more logical purchase. then get tales from topographic oceans, then relayer.. chronologically is the way to do it with yes, imo

Thats the same way I got into Yes! I would go Yes songs next, then Going for the One.  But if you really like some of their longer songs pick up TFTO, in my opinion its better then relayer and a little less cheesey, but having said this I do enjoy Drama. "I am a Camera!"  Really though you can't go wrong with any Yes album. ENJOY!

Hey - go for it - The Yes Album that is  ...and don't be scared of TFTO. It's brilliant IMHO...get to know the group and their style of prog rock first before taking on TFTO. You will not regret it. Cheers

It's funny gok22us cos I bought Fragile first and just bought CTTE recently and have been wondering which one next - from what I'm hearing I might take the advice of those who say to go chronologically and get the Yes album next - I'm sure I'll end up buying Relayer and TFTO in good time!
