yea, i bought Fragile, and i loved it. I bought Close to the Edge, and i almost started crying it was so damn good! i love this band. very very much. I need to know which album to pick up next, i'm quite interested in tales from Topographic oceans, but i'm not to sure if thats the one i pick up next. help me. |

i think you need to be extremely accustomed to yes before you approach
topographic, like i was. its a good album but iwould recommend relayer
first, then going for the one, then the yes album. only after
that should you get topographic

Logically the next album is Topographic Oceans. It would be good if you would listen to them in their correct chronological order because you would appreciate the bands development more. I was too young to appreciate this and listened to Yes back numbers in a haphazard way. Mind you I still went crazy over their music anyway, but when I speak to old proggers they can relate to the time and mood of the movement and have a better understanding of the vibe. There again, we are not in the 70s any more and that 'golden age' / musical philosophy is gone. Again Topographic feels good to me. The Yes sound hasn't changed much since Close To the Edge,(there is a noticeable gap in production/sound engineering between Fragile and Close to ..) except for Alan White. It is a bit harder to listen to, because all 4 tracks are 17min+ unlike the previous albums, but it grows on you with repeated listening. Tracks 1, 3 and 4 showcase some of Yes's greatest pieces ever. If anything you can learn the different names of the sun in different languages in track 3 - and it does wonders for your general knowledge. ------------- "...seems Helen of Troy has found a new face, again ..." |

Wow,lucky you! To be in the process of discovering Yes Music must be very exciting for you. Probably get The Yes Album next then Going For The One. Relayer is not really one of my favourites and Topographic Oceans is a big ask for a Yes noobie! -------------

Both Tales as relayer are quite difficult to get. if however that's what your after than go get 'em. The Yes Album is a save purchase, can't go wrong with that one, some chalenging songs, but not excessivly difficult. Maybe it is interesting to buy one of their first two albums in time aswell. personally I bought Yesterdays as one of my first albums, a compilation of some of their best songs from their first two albums, that also got me started very well.

definitely the yes album to me, the yes album, fragile and ctte are the triumvirate of great yes albums, not to say that relayer is lacking by any means, but based on your circumstances, the yes album would be a much more logical purchase. then get tales from topographic oceans, then relayer.. chronologically is the way to do it with yes, imo |

As a huge 'Yes' fan I would recommend 'The Yes Album' first. As has been mentioned it is best to follow the group through chronologically. 'Relayer' is a great album but it took one or two extra listens before I really appreciated it as a whole work. 'Topographic Oceans' is VERY demanding and I recommend that you by pass this until you are fully immersed in albums prior to and after it's release. If you can get hold of a copy 'Yessongs' is awesome and a great way to further experience the 'Yes' listening pleasure -------------

Thats the same way I got into Yes! I would go Yes songs next, then Going for the One. But if you really like some of their longer songs pick up TFTO, in my opinion its better then relayer and a little less cheesey, but having said this I do enjoy Drama

the stuff about the chronological order and devolpment of the band......i really noticed that when i bought close to the edge it sounded way more epic and stuff, i loved it :). thats why i'm really look at TFTO, but honestly the album scares me heh......so Yes album? |

RELAYER! The Yes album is good, but if you can cope with Close to the Edge (a masterpiece!!) then I think your ready for Relayer. I dont think its as good as CTTE, but it is a fine album nonetheless, and of course features Patrick Moraz on keyboards, not Rick Wakemen. He left because he thought Topographic Oceans was crap. I think TFTO is an ok album, but certainly their most 'hard to get' ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |
