It's Triumvi-rat.

^ 'Much more' melodic...? Don't know about that but imho they weren't really a copycat band as much as influenced by ELP.
But at any rate they were far more interesting than 'Starcasm'.   ;)

Triumvirat were not a copycat band, they were quite different than ELP and in many case much more melodic.

The 1st Starcastle album is just an amusing, novelty listen while Triumvirat moves beyond the band that obviously influenced them and has much more meat on the bones Wink

T-Rat over Starcastle for sure. I agree with some of the comments above but I find Starcastle of lessor quality than the Rat. And I've always found the comparison of T-Rat to ELP a thin argument.

True--I understand---generally speaking I don't like bands who try to sound like other bands---usually like original players who created an original sound.
You can be influenced by great bands but you have to come up with an original sound---that is not derivative.

I think they are both pretty bad---not my kind of music----but it's just an opinion.

Starcastle: One of my favorites and been dulling needles on turntables for 40 years listening to Fountains of Light and their first album.  Absolutely love them and they are in my soul.  I can listen to them over Yes any time even though I think Yes was more technically proficient.
Favorite Yes album?.....Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe
Triumvirat: I had the first 3 albums and gave them away when I moved 35 years ago.  Rediscovered them in the last 2 months and cannot get enough of Spartacus and Illusions on a Double Dimple.  I enjoy Triumvirat over ELP.  I might even give the nod to T'Rat over Starcastle, but then again, I'm fickle.
Flash: All 3 albums have been in my collection although I can only listen to them about once per year. Flash, In the Can and Out of Our Hands are very good examples of early prog.
What do I listen to now?  Three are on my "Listen every moment I can" list:
1.) Guilt Machine - On This Perfect Day
2.) Frost - Milliontown
3.) Unitopia - In the Garden

I think the first two Starcastle albums are good(notice I didn't say great)but I wouldn't consider them total prog classics. If I was going to review and rate them on PA they'd get 3 stars at the most.

Honestly sometimes we'd better think twice before launching such predictable polls - don't see any point in exposing bands to that humiliating result, obviously it's another unfair comparation...

I didn't mean to insult either band by using the term copy cat but it just seems that both bands, at least at times, wore their influences on their sleeves. They certainly weren't the only ones to do that though. It's not a bad thing in and of itself though. I read where Starcastle tried to deny copying YES saying they had the same influences but weren't deliberately trying to sound like YES. Yeah ok. ;) Anyone know the band Druid? Apparently they sounded a bit like YES also.

How about any and all Neo-Prog bands?

I voted for Starcastle but do not consider them a copy cat band. To be sure, their main influence is Yes, and it is strong, but I also hear a lot of ELP influence as well.
