Which copy cat band do you prefer? Personally I think Triumvirat blows Starcastle out of the water but that's just my opinion. Smile

Also, I couldn't think of any copy cat bands for Pink Floyd or Genesis although I'm sure that in the case of Genesis at least  there are probably a few.

Neither. If a band can't strive for an original sound or at least put one foot forward in trying to be unique in some way, then they certainly don't deserve their own poll.

Well thank you for sharing your opinion. Does this mean you don't like IQ or Marillion? :p Oh and neither band has their own poll. They're sharing this one. ;)

Starcastle is bad + I'd probably pick Triumvirat over ELP most days

^ Well I don't know if I'd go that far but I certainly think Triumvirat was a very good band. Cool user name by the way. ;)

I'm not convinced that you can copy ELP anyway. Triumvirat sort of distilled Tarkus and made it their own. Really good band and Jurgen Fritz is probably a more fluid player than Keith Emerson. However ELP had 'attitude' and were one of the pioneers of prog and also advanced the use of the Moog synth. I don't see that much Triumvirat that is comparable to ELP tracks like Take A Pebble, Pirates, Trilogy and Hoedown.

Triumvirat are a pretty special band to me and I play them a lot more often, but Starcastle are a fine band as well.

To dismiss Triumvirat as a mere `copycat' act is hugely insulting though! Also, the Triumvirat albums when they worked more to a poppier/accessible/commercial sound mixed with prog such as `Pompeii', etc, were more successful than ELP's similar moments.

Did anyone ever bother listening to that later Starcastle album with the shocking black and white picture of the band on the front?! Not much of a prog akbum, but certainly a well-played AOR album!

IQ and Marillion may have been heavily influenced by Genesis and other 70s prog bands, but their sound soon became very much their own.

As for the poll, I much prefer Triumvirat. Starcastle are just too close to Yes for comfort.

Triumvirat, they are my favorite band. And I have always seen them as having a unique identity of their own. Of course they have their influences -everybody does-but they put it together their own way, really.

I think Starcastle had one good album, the first one, which I have, but Triumvirat has several.

How about any and all Neo-Prog bands?

I voted for Starcastle but do not consider them a copy cat band. To be sure, their main influence is Yes, and it is strong, but I also hear a lot of ELP influence as well.

I didn't mean to insult either band by using the term copy cat but it just seems that both bands, at least at times, wore their influences on their sleeves. They certainly weren't the only ones to do that though. It's not a bad thing in and of itself though. I read where Starcastle tried to deny copying YES saying they had the same influences but weren't deliberately trying to sound like YES. Yeah ok. ;) Anyone know the band Druid? Apparently they sounded a bit like YES also.

Triumvirat for me too !! I only have Starcastle S/T and that's enough from them.

Honestly sometimes we'd better think twice before launching such predictable polls - don't see any point in exposing bands to that humiliating result, obviously it's another unfair comparation...

I think the first two Starcastle albums are good(notice I didn't say great)but I wouldn't consider them total prog classics. If I was going to review and rate them on PA they'd get 3 stars at the most.

Starcastle: One of my favorites and been dulling needles on turntables for 40 years listening to Fountains of Light and their first album.  Absolutely love them and they are in my soul.  I can listen to them over Yes any time even though I think Yes was more technically proficient.
Favorite Yes album?.....Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe
Triumvirat: I had the first 3 albums and gave them away when I moved 35 years ago.  Rediscovered them in the last 2 months and cannot get enough of Spartacus and Illusions on a Double Dimple.  I enjoy Triumvirat over ELP.  I might even give the nod to T'Rat over Starcastle, but then again, I'm fickle.
Flash: All 3 albums have been in my collection although I can only listen to them about once per year. Flash, In the Can and Out of Our Hands are very good examples of early prog.
What do I listen to now?  Three are on my "Listen every moment I can" list:
1.) Guilt Machine - On This Perfect Day
2.) Frost - Milliontown
3.) Unitopia - In the Garden

I think they are both pretty bad---not my kind of music----but it's just an opinion.

True--I understand---generally speaking I don't like bands who try to sound like other bands---usually like original players who created an original sound.
You can be influenced by great bands but you have to come up with an original sound---that is not derivative.

T-Rat over Starcastle for sure. I agree with some of the comments above but I find Starcastle of lessor quality than the Rat. And I've always found the comparison of T-Rat to ELP a thin argument.

The 1st Starcastle album is just an amusing, novelty listen while Triumvirat moves beyond the band that obviously influenced them and has much more meat on the bones Wink

Triumvirat were not a copycat band, they were quite different than ELP and in many case much more melodic.

^ 'Much more' melodic...? Don't know about that but imho they weren't really a copycat band as much as influenced by ELP.
But at any rate they were far more interesting than 'Starcasm'.   ;)
