I believe that the bands with the most dedicated fans are the following:
Rush
Marillion
Van Der Graaf
King Crimson
Genesis
I'm talking about the Prog part of Rock music.

They are just die hard fans, and there are a lot of them here. I would say I'm a huge fan of KC but I won't give half their albums 5 stars.

I didn't say it was wrong, I would rate a lot of albums 5 stars that most people wouldn't, what I mean is that a passionate fan would probably do that. Same goes for the other bands I cited. You can look it up yourself, I saw several times when 5 stars ratings were granted for entire discographies.

I know that, that's why I didn't include KC or GG, which seem to have as much fans here as Pink Floyd, Beatles, Yes or Genesis, but outside they don't match.

Its two very diffrent questions - out in the real world Crimson/GG/Van der graf. would not be that big, but here they are huge. Genesis / Floyd / DT the other way around. Basicly on PA easy to get into dosent make extra fans, outside it does. And nothing wrong with that, we are not a radio station selling bubble gum based on listner ratings.

I think it is. The question is "Of all the prog bands across all genres and sub genres which band...." EDIT: You're right, I totally forgot about The Beatles and Pink Floyd, they do have a massive fan base.

Beatless have the most dedicated fanbase, you could dig up the worst thinkable album based on the worst demo tapes, and it would go trible platinum is a few days. would be all over the media, and would get insane airplay. They are ahead of every other rock band by a large margin. Strictly prog. my guess is that Genesis & Floyd would be able to fill the larges spaces. Regarding very loyal fans (i love everything they did) , i guess Tool, Crimson, & DT got a good amount of those. I dont count, cos im not a fanatic Crimson fan, im a fanatic Fripp fan

You're wrong. Not about the loyalty, . Something that could never happen to bands like Camel, Gentle Giant or ELP. Given that all the other three bands are defunct or only perform sporadically whilst VDGG are an active band, that is hardly surprising. And I certainly don't consider those magazines to be of any merit whatsoever. However, in the 70s all three bands you quote were considerably more prominent and featured much more in the music press (NME, Melody Maker, Sounds) than VDGG ever did (except in Italy, perhaps); in ELP's case, vastly so.
In my local prog group (150 active members and rising), we have only played about 3 VDGG tracks in all the time I've been attending; all three of the bands you quote feature practically every time. |

It's not about those magazine's merits. I'm just proving you wrong. Although VdGG were relatively obscure in the UK when you grew up, they now have have a much broader fanbase than most of your favorite progbands (not necessarily containing more people). Although the three bands I qoute were considerably more prominent and featured much more in the NME, Melody Maker, Sounds etc in the 70's, they are never featured anywhere outside the specialised progpress anymore (except on worst albums ever lists). That was more or less the point I was trying to make. You think every VdGG van is on this site, but its more likely that every Camel fan is here.
So while ELP are ridiculed everywhere except in local prog groups and on PA, VdGG's influence and fanbase grows larger every year, and even reaches people not interested in prog. Its not about my tastes against yours, I love both Camel and GG, and only buy the magazines I mentioned if I notice they got special features on kraut, psych, progressive electronic, jazzrock, RIO or KC/VdGG etc...

This makes a lot of sense to me about VDGG having a broader appeal. But ELP are ridiculed here also, so your wrong about that.
