Van Giraffe Generator and Peter Hammill.

I find Hammill's vocals horrendous, like nails on a chalkboard in Hell.

There are a few bands that I feel have awesome music, but the vocals turn me off almost immediately.  Dream Theater, Spock's Beard and Transatlantic come to mind with my great music/annoying vocals dilemma.  Another band that I really don't dislike, but can't get into, is King Crimson.  I'm just not getting it with them.  I didn't really mind Islands, but I can't get into the rest (from what I've heard, anyway.)

Dream Theater, not much to say, nothing makes their music remotely interesting.
Marillion, a bit too poppy for my tastes.
Kansas, It just doesn't click, they feel a bit artificial in my opinion.
Mike Oldfield, I don't like the structure in his songs, that he just builds more and more layers on top of eachother.

I hate everything you say in this post.

I would not say Hate, but I really cannot get into Yes or Dream Theater.

I think both bands are fantastic musicians, but after numerous listens to many albums I think that their songwriting is incoherent, and that the musical changes they use do not make sense at all in most cases.

It's easy to use Love and Hate in context of things we like and dislike without getting overly emotional about it, we do it all the time - I love steak and hate liver - there is nothing in that beyond the words on the page - I'm not going to war over it - it's just a figure of speech we all use all the time.

Ho-hum.

Love: Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Pain Of Salvation, Savatage, Porcupine Tree, Mansun... and many many more.

Hate: Sylvan, Phideaux Ermm ... that's it, can't think of anything else... Oh yeah, Nickleback.

What?

Hate is a strong word and I also think I don't "hate" any.

That said, one band that is most loved on this site and that never really clicked for me is...Jethro Tull. When I was new here I made a poll with JT albums which you liked most and, not surprisingly, Thick As A Brick got most votes. So I listened to this album several times. Nothing. The compositional structure did not do it for me. Then I listened to A Passion Play. I like A Passion Play more than TAAB, but still I am not really enthusiastic.

On the other hand, I enjoy it when I hear Jethro Tull on the radio among the otherwise dull pop songs. I attended a party and the DJ played "Locomotive Breath" and the people around me asked me "Who is this?" and I got excited and recommended them to listen to more Jethro Tull (and I thanked the DJ for playing it)!

Tried very hard to get into King Crimson, but no, they donīt work for me at all.
Some other bands I have my difficuluties with: Porcupine Tree, Gentle Giant, Magma, Frank Zappa, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, ...

I feel sorry for you...no I don't.

Marillion. I've tried too many times to keep count. Just doesn't work for me.

Never really saw the deal with Flower Kings, Ayreon and Tool.

I can hear moments of brilliance in Spocks Beard but overall, they don't put together a satisfying package for me.

I like Porcupine Tree in small doses without being absolutely bowled over at any level.

I like Dream Theater's early work a lot.  Not so much their later and supposedly more advanced work like SFAM or Six Degrees.

I like many of the classic prog greats to varying degrees.  But I don't count myself among the hardcore VDGG fans though I do like their albums.  Kansas and Caravan never did much for me.

The only album that rubs me up the wrong way is Triumvirat 'Spartacus'. Because of that I've never followed up on any of their other albums.
I've certainly fallen out of love with Transatlantic and The Flower Kings.Beyond that I'm pretty happy with my prog collection and wouldn't get rid of anything.

Neither do I.Wink But it seems this thread deals more with my choice of title (I thought a little vroom would help!) than simply finding out which celebrated PROG bands others like that you just cannot get into. Its like judging an album by its title and not teh contant. The existentialist debate between good and evil (love/hate) is better dealt with elsewhere.  Please.....
I saw Chicago twice in the late 70s early 80s LIVE and it was terrible. The second barely lasted 40 minutes as audience reaction was timid at best (Montreal was a prog hotbed then...) . The records just do not do it for me except for the debut.....See what I mean?

I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.
