There are bands that many if not most seem to adore but you just can't get into it, regardless how hard you wanna !
Fine, we all have our tastes and they are not debatable but what are your picks of Thumbs Down that everyone else Thumbs Up ?

I have a few :
Dream Theater (great musicians but...)
Spock's Beard (same)
and Magic Pie (really nothing special)

Van Der Graaf Generator.
I've listened to their first few albums a bit, and i cant get into them at all. They kinda bore me i guess.

Perhaps the greatest heresy I have committed is that I dislike most of Genesis' material, including most of the beloved albums, Selling England by the Pound, Foxtrot, and Nursery Cryme.  Because of the accolades they've received, I really want to like these albums, but I just can't.

NO. STOP. We even still have http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=75144" rel="nofollow - an active thread on this retarded subject, not to mention the five thousand times we've talked about it in the past.

I really don't understand why a collab from '06 would think this thread is a good idea.

HI,

None really ... somethings just take longer to appreciate and enjoy ...

I was not a great GG fan and still am not, but there isn't a moment that I listen to that stuff and go ... that's some amazing muscianship ...

My tastes are so wide and far ranging, that about the only thing that is weird to me is ... people saying they can not get into someone or something ... and in my experience, when I finally defined that to myslf, it had to do with the fact that I wanted to hear something I liked ... NOT what was there in teh first place!

There is nothing to like or dislike about the human love, condition and the art of it all, in music or anything else ... it just IS ... and it becomes a matter of us having the ability to accept it ... doesn't it? And for whatever reason, sometimes we just don't ahve that open side of ourselves ... like saying that music has to be this and that ... specailly when at the time, and bands, that we are placing these restrictions on, were doing this in a time, when it was more important to break the restrictions than not ... but we simply do not have enough ability to get out of that mentality or something like it? ... or we lost the freedom and we're now back in the cage?

Weird ... and this happened to me with a bird by the way ... I gave him his freedom and put his cage outside with door open ... he went out took a fling flying (he could do that in the house also all day long), came back, sat on top ... flew again, and I went to sleep ... an hour later, I came back and he was still in the cage and even said hello when I opened the door!

We're such creatures of habits and comforts, aren't we?

Magic Pie and Pink Floyd since Dark Side of the Moon are some acts that I really dislike even if a lot of people do. I don't try to like things still. I guess that everybody have their own perception of what's good or not and that's fine.

I'd re-title this to love/whatever.   Just because a particular artist just doesn't appeal to you or you're just not interested in them after trying them out for whatever reason that's hot the same as hate.

In the question there is no mention of anything as drastic as hatred itself.

I hate thread titles that don't accurately reflect what's really being asked.  I mean, seriously.  I hate thread titles with vs in them.  I hate poll thread titles where someone doesn't identify themselves and then present choices that are personal to them.  If you do a holiday thread, put the dad-gummned year in it.  LOL

Anyway, there are some artists that people rave about and just never clicked with me.  Spock's Beard and The Flower Kings come to mind.  I actually have one of each.  Like you said, good musicians, but...

If you agree with any of this, please raise both your hands:

OK, just the one on the right.   I would love to see her do that.Big smile

Oh, and something else, one of my Grandmothers taught me not to say you hate something food-wise.  Try it and if you don't like it, the polite thing is to say you don't care for it.  I have carried over that lesson into my music commentary.

That is a distinction without a difference for how the discussion actually turns out. And I'm sure if I were willing to bother I could find an unlocked thread about most overrated bands as well.

Tangerine Dream, but maybe that doesn't count. I suppose I just can't get into a whole style (Krautrock).

Okay, another try. I can't get into Rush, except for Moving Pictures, which I think is a nice album. Can't get into Flower Kings either, except for some early songs.

I don't hate any prog bands.

However, in the spirit of this thread, i nominate Gentle Giant.  I have an enormous respect for what they tried to do and have recently bought all of their (pre 1977) albums for the second time (and in some cases the third time).

I still can't get into them.  The music is interesting but not enjoyable and i can't find a spot in my top 1000 for even one of their tracks.

There are bands I always like, regardless of mood, time of day, or whatever: Tori Amos, Jethro Tull, most classic prog bands, and many of the newer ones like Porcupine Tree, DT, Beardfish, whatever.
Then there are some that I have to be in the right mood for, that would turn me off during other circumstances. These would include almost everyone else.
There is one exception: I HATE!!!! death growly voices. Oh so fierce, I'm scared, hide me. Regardless of the music involved, they are just so very, very, very embarrassing!!!! It makes me cringe to think that such garbage (my opinion, shoot me!) should be connected to my favourite music genre.

I don't know what I have - or don't have - with King Crimson. They have made three or four albums which I would easily give a four star rating, their music can be labeled as highly innovative prog, but somehow I would never name them among my favourites. On the other hand, I don't dislike them either and I can get into most of their music.
It is not even some kind of resistance against those core PA members who seem to form the most solid fanbase that this band could ever dream of - in my (slighltly distorted?) perception Confused.

Neither do I.Wink But it seems this thread deals more with my choice of title (I thought a little vroom would help!) than simply finding out which celebrated PROG bands others like that you just cannot get into. Its like judging an album by its title and not teh contant. The existentialist debate between good and evil (love/hate) is better dealt with elsewhere.  Please.....
I saw Chicago twice in the late 70s early 80s LIVE and it was terrible. The second barely lasted 40 minutes as audience reaction was timid at best (Montreal was a prog hotbed then...) . The records just do not do it for me except for the debut.....See what I mean?

The only album that rubs me up the wrong way is Triumvirat 'Spartacus'. Because of that I've never followed up on any of their other albums.

Never really saw the deal with Flower Kings, Ayreon and Tool.

I can hear moments of brilliance in Spocks Beard but overall, they don't put together a satisfying package for me.

I like Porcupine Tree in small doses without being absolutely bowled over at any level.

I like Dream Theater's early work a lot.  Not so much their later and supposedly more advanced work like SFAM or Six Degrees.

I like many of the classic prog greats to varying degrees.  But I don't count myself among the hardcore VDGG fans though I do like their albums.  Kansas and Caravan never did much for me.

Hate is a strong word and I also think I don't "hate" any.

That said, one band that is most loved on this site and that never really clicked for me is...Jethro Tull. When I was new here I made a poll with JT albums which you liked most and, not surprisingly, Thick As A Brick got most votes. So I listened to this album several times. Nothing. The compositional structure did not do it for me. Then I listened to A Passion Play. I like A Passion Play more than TAAB, but still I am not really enthusiastic.

On the other hand, I enjoy it when I hear Jethro Tull on the radio among the otherwise dull pop songs. I attended a party and the DJ played "Locomotive Breath" and the people around me asked me "Who is this?" and I got excited and recommended them to listen to more Jethro Tull (and I thanked the DJ for playing it)!

It's easy to use Love and Hate in context of things we like and dislike without getting overly emotional about it, we do it all the time - I love steak and hate liver - there is nothing in that beyond the words on the page - I'm not going to war over it - it's just a figure of speech we all use all the time.

Ho-hum.

Love: Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Pain Of Salvation, Savatage, Porcupine Tree, Mansun... and many many more.

Hate: Sylvan, Phideaux Ermm ... that's it, can't think of anything else... Oh yeah, Nickleback.

I would not say Hate, but I really cannot get into Yes or Dream Theater.

I think both bands are fantastic musicians, but after numerous listens to many albums I think that their songwriting is incoherent, and that the musical changes they use do not make sense at all in most cases.

Rush, I've listened to more albums by them than I can keep track of, didn't enjoy a single one.
Dream Theater, not much to say, nothing makes their music remotely interesting.
Marillion, a bit too poppy for my tastes.
Kansas, It just doesn't click, they feel a bit artificial in my opinion.
Mike Oldfield, I don't like the structure in his songs, that he just builds more and more layers on top of eachother.

That's pretty much it... Oh, and everyone doesn't have to comment on the hate part by the way, the man has already explained why he named this thread like this.

There are a few bands that I feel have awesome music, but the vocals turn me off almost immediately.  Dream Theater, Spock's Beard and Transatlantic come to mind with my great music/annoying vocals dilemma.  Another band that I really don't dislike, but can't get into, is King Crimson.  I'm just not getting it with them.  I didn't really mind Islands, but I can't get into the rest (from what I've heard, anyway.)
