Topic: Hammond Deathmatch: Keith Emerson vs Jon Lord Posted: March 30 2010 at 07:46 |
My wife tells me she saw Jon Lord take the lead for a 'Purple reunion encore when Blackmore couldn't be a*rsed to come back out on stage for it and he played an absolute blinder...
They both play fantastically but of the two I really have to go for Emerson. Wakeman was the one that first caught my ears but when it comes to playing the Hammond, I do think Emerson was the "bees knees". And I wouldn't get to hung up on who finished their classical training. It's not the be all and end all. The ability to express yourself and make a sound that is only yours is key. For me, Emerson has managed to achieve a more distinctive, recognisable sound than Jon Lord.

...one need only listen to this to be a convert from Emerson to Lord:
Lord, indeed, has THAT sound.

Emerson by a fingernail. Lord had to play much more in the context of a band, playing lots of rhythm to support Blackmore's guitar, but he could solo when given the chance. Got to love his use of overdrive on a keyboard! Emerson was front and center almost all the time. Both are great though!

I would think that this poll would undeniably go towards Emerson (he is winning, but only by 20%.) Then again, I haven't heard much Deep Purple aside from the hits.

Jon Lord just plays rhythm parts to Blackmore in the majority of DP songs, and his solos are normally fast but simple phrases in his right hand
Keith Emerson can play lead, rhythm and counterpoint all at the same time

Like I said, Lord is probably the better hammond player but Keith is stronger overall. Keith is fast, but sometimes his playing is so shallow.

Emerson by miles and miles...
I almost tought this was a joke how can you put sutch a boring unintresting and uncreative player as Lord agains a master like Emerson, nothing Lord did stands out in anyway cant think of anything intresting he did. |
Oh come on...are you just looking to pick a fight with someone?? While I certainly prefer Emerson to Lord, he was a pioneer in the pre-metal genre and did some fine work in DP. To say ' nothing' he did stands out is not just unfair, I'd go as far as to say it's uninformed. I'd put him in my top 5 organ players any day.

Think of Hammond organ, think of Jon Lord. The best.
And Emerson was NOT classically trained. Wakeman had some classical training but dropped out of the RCM before completing his course; nevertheless, he spanks Emerson for technical accuracy, though maybe not for excitement and showmanship.

Can't say I would agree on this. Emerson's phrasing is way superior to Wakeman's (IMHO). And while both (in fact most keyboardist) have that tendency to try and play 'faster' than the next guy, Rickie has never even attempted anything like the 'ol rotating grand piano or the wild buck-a-roo L-100 ride. Not that that has anything at all to do with the question at hand...I'm just sayin' !

Keith Emerson easily. It's not even a fair matchup. Maybe Emerson vs Wakeman (maybe?). |
Wakeman would've gotten my vote if that was the case, but as it is, Emerson.

Thinking it through, Lord probably is better on the Hammond. It's his natural instrument. Emerson is better technically and more diverse, but his true forte is the piano forte.

Ah. Well.
Can I have a joker?
Oh, Jon Lord. "Made In Japan" shows he was a great improvisator and that counts to my opinion.

Lord by miles. I've never really cared for Emerson's musical exhibitionism and stage antics. And like others have already said, Lord had THAT sound. His solo work is also superior imo.

Keith. I like Deep Purple and Jon Lord and everything, but during an extended Lord solo my mind can wander. Not so much with Keith. I will so that Lord's solo on "Hush" is still incredible after all this time.

I prefer Jon Lord over Keith Emerson, mostly because I prefer Deep Purple to ELP 99.9% of the time. They're both great players, but something about Lord's style fits my musical vision better.
