Aw, c'mon man. Nobody ever said that. If you don't like prog metal, it's fine with us.

I called some of you close minded, because I see some of the avant garde/zheul lovers raise their heads above everyone else and say "our tastes are better than yours! Metal is for weak minded fools".

You also say I have no patience, when I joined this site I was stuck in the seventies, and if someone were to send me a basket of dog crap labeled progressive, I probably would have eaten it, given how much I loved the music. Here you are though saying I have no patience, yet you dont have the patience, nor tolerance to look past some distorted guitars, or some harsh vocals, you would rather listen to a bunch of guys chant in a made uplanguage, to a made up religion (dont get me wrong, I was impressed with MDK). I'm trying to keep this as little insulting I can, but I can help but call out some hypocracy here.

- Stick to your little avant garde world. That's funny!

And don't worry, you're not insulting at all. That's impossible when you have no idea what you're talking about. It feels more like you're giving me compliments.

What is being openminded to you anyway? Is it equal to being openminded to prog and all its sub-genres?

^ that's perfectly normal, since the artist was added just recently. It will subside quickly, just with most of the other prog related additions.

^ don't be so happy DB... people use those names when they want us to know how open minded they are even though they can't understand the idea of some metal being at least 10% prog.... So they go: "Don't get me wrong. I love true honest hard rock/metal bands like AC/DC, who knew about the brain limitations of their fans who are addicts to a very infantile version of prog...."

So just a few are true fans of Bon and Lemmy as you are. Those positive mentions you red at times seem to be just like attempts at being politically correct.

I am seriously surprised by how many times AC/DC and Lemmy Kilminster show up in these threads. And mostly positive mentions, too. Shocked
P.S. I'm a fan.

Personally, I've found that the only music on this site that I don't enjoy are the bands with vocal styles that I dislike. Namely the growling/shrieking/screaming types. The funny thing is that I often enjoy these same band's instrumental tracks. It's usually vocals that turn me off a band.  I like Aghora for being a tech-metal band that doesn't have vocals that set my teeth on edge. And this is from a guy whose favorite vocalists include Peter Hammill and Captain Beefheart.

I'm in a pissy mood, so if you're upset, whipe off the sh*t I just threw on you and walk away.

And notice, I'm not tired of a genre that belongs on this site. Unless it's Zeuhl. Then I'm really f**king tired of it.

I think someone´s got his period

In my opinion, the use of "prog" or "progressive" to determine a genre of music has become a farse. There is such different kinds of music under the same umbrella that prog does not represent any kind of music anymore.

Of course no genre definition is supposed to define exactly the tastes of people. There will always be fans of a specific genre that dislikes some of the bands classified as being of that genre. But I don't think of any genre that has such diverse music like "prog". It is very hard to a single person, for example, enjoy Barclay James Harvest, Opeth, Ougenweide, Oriental Sunshine, Tangerine Dream, Jean Luc Ponty, Henry Cow, Mr. Bungle and John Zorn. It is highly expected that a person will not enjoy all of these bands by logic.

And before people start praising themselves or accusing the others, those who do enjoy everything are not gifted, they just have an uncommon taste. And talking about musical tastes, everything is acceptable, including not liking music at all. Using the lack of diverse/mature musical taste as an argument is a clear case of trying to disqualify the other person and not his opinion. The discussion goes nowhere.

Let's try to rearrange the discussion in rational terms. The question, to reach everybody, should be "Tired of music you don't like getting much more attention than music you like?". We could even start a thread like that, just to eliminate the negative "karma" this thread carries. And then, we could debate over the most important subject that is whether the use of prog as categorization of music unite people with common interests or not. The conclusion may lead to the conclusion that not only the site, but people's own definition of prog already encloses many potentially incompatible genres. And maybe people understand what, not only PA, but most of "prog" music sites are doing compared to their own tastes and eventually choose those who fits better to their own needs.

I was generous enough to write preferred genres, wasn't I? And I started saying I'd much rather take the extreme progmetal over the pompous stuff.

Don't see too many of you contributing in the general music section (except when its about metal). Over there we're so openminded we sometimes talk about music not related to rock, and not even from the 70's!

Aw, c'mon man. Nobody ever said that. If you don't like prog metal, it's fine with us. We understand that you simply don't like prog metal the way you like classic progressive rock.   Live and let live. Tech/Extreme Prog Metal is progressive, it is innovative, it does not in any way choke the site and it belongs here. If you still don't believe it, we won't convince you.

So, how certain are you? I'm a prog metal fan and I also love stuffs from the seventies as well.

There does seem to be some pretty infantile debating spread through this thread. Some people seem to find it difficult to make their point without including somethign personal about the person or people they don't agree with.

Phrases such as "Clueless people", "their kindergarten version of prog", "Go and join another site" etc. have no place in a constructive and civilised debate.

Let's keep it friendly eh? Those who consistently include insults to others in their posts will find themselves hearing from the admin team.

Let's start another thread:

"Are you tired of endless useless threads where people express their frustration because PA is not the place they would exactly want it to be, reflecting their own interests and tastes, which of course are much better than everybody else's?"

Or another one:

"Are you tired of threads that from the beginning ask for confrontation about such a non-confrontational thing as MUSIC should be?"

"Are you tired of people that can't stand a lot of what happens in PA yet for some reason continue to hang out here and post every single day in threads about artists and genres they supposedly hate and that are one of the reasons why they can't stand PA in the first place?"

"Are you tired of musical masochism?"

If you are tired with such a useless post as this one... please... I only follow suit.

*shels-Post metal, prog rock, acoustic
Kayo Dot-Avante Garde, Avant Garde metal

Talk Talk-Synth pop, experimental, post rock (holy sh*t, third one)

Funny thing about Talk Talk is that they're last album was made in 1991, and their 1988 album is my favorite one. Another thing, this site dosent even recognize this group as a post rock band.

True as my chart goes on, more post rock comes up, a lot more. Also true, My charts have pretty pathetic numbers, and are no credible source of what I listen to. This what I listen to on the computer, and what I listen to on the computer is what I listen to in my car, in my room, and on my MP3.

Basically Josh, you just have a problem with me, so you try and attack me with some lame arguments (thats right I said attack) that only proved my point:

Quote  your top artist on last.fm is currently Ulver, is it not?

Note a post rock band.

Quote Can I then accuse people of being stuck in the post-rock aisle?

If you wanna get me upset, just listen to a bunch of post rock bands, and write a bunch of 1 star reviews on them, regardless of what you hear (not that you'll listen anyways). I'm sorry if I upset you about the whole STC thing, but talking with a bunch trolls got annoying. Take your personal problems somewhere else. Fail.

Yes I'm sure talking about STC in this thread is the appropriate place. Wink
What I believe Josh was trying to do was offer a counter argument to yours. Everyone has their tastes. Everyone has their own little corner of this site that they care about whether it be discussing Yes and Genesis or Cult of Luna or Magma or any other band. You can't fault people for having tastes so if people want to talk about prog metal, let them. Who are we to stop them?

Okay forget I said anything about STC, my bad, go ahead, if thats the leverage the three of you need, go ahead use it. Maybe I'm the one with personal problems from those dark times. I did what I meant to do in the first place though, destroy his questions with answers. Amirite?

Rocktopus, if you reject all kinds of metal, and just stick in your own little avant garde world without even giving any modern bands a chance, wouldnt that epidomize being close minded? I, for one, am most puzzled by this paragraph. Since when does being a part of STC mean that one has become some sort of üntermensch? How does one lose an unrelated argument on the sole basis that he's from STC?

It's known as the argumentum ad hominem, and it's basically what you use when you don't have any logic or evidence to back you up.
