Kamelot: Ghost Opera....was fairly uninspiring...

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I was gonna say, did Dream Theater have a release this year? That would by default have to qualify.

I do not know which was the worst progressive rock album of 2007, but it was NOT Systematic Chaos. I can recommend Systematic Chaos as a traditional progressive rock fan - but not as someone who knows an awful lot about Dream Theater.

I think Snakes & Arrows was the best Rush album in 14 years and FOABP may not be PT's best, but it taught me to love Deadwing. Systematic Chaos was a slight improvement above 8V, the band has lost my interest a bit so it was no disappointment anyway. Ah well, now I've reacted to 80% of the previous posts. I think the worst thing I heard this year was Starcastle's comeback. Disappointing (I like their old records so I could have had a positive expectation) as well as downright awful.

No offense, but what's with everyone buying music they don't like?
![]() (Though it happened to me a bit in the old days, when a previously-loved band would release a dud -- is that the case here? Still, it's easier to hear before buying these days.
![]() Are people largely referring to albums they may have heard via a friend, but did not buy? How many listens are enough to fairly judge an album? Just curious as to how so many get to condemn so many albums all of the time (and write all those negative reviews). I like about 99% of my 1200 CD collection.

I think that Scarsick is not that bad. Maybe it woul be a better idea to release it as a Daniel Gildenlöw solo project under the moniker Rage Against the Stairmaster or something like that. The worst about this album that it is supposed to be 2nd part of The Perfect Element.

Can't say I've listened to any bad prog albums this year, but I did think Fear of a Blank Planet was disappointing. I can't even pinpoint why it just seemed...lacking compared to their other releases. Maybe my expectations were too high.

Quite so. Even feeling sick about Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Rush or Pain Of Salvation isn't original anymore. ![]() A shame that 2007 is, after all, made of so many new albums, and so much diversity, yet these artists's new goodies are constantly the most loved/hated. |

When I was a kid we used to have a comic TV show for children, by the duo Theo and Thea. Can't help it, but the association makes me want to try this album ![]() Here they are: ![]() Edited by Angelo - December 31 2007 at 10:42 |

I actually enjoyed 'Systematic Chaos' a lot more than I expected to. Some of the lyrics get a bit close to Manowar territory (all that 'dark master within I will fight for you' stuff in 'In The Presence Of Enemies') but it might just be the only DT album that didn't have a song I disliked. Not my album of the year as they haven't really deviated too far from their usual sound, but still took a few more chances than some ('Repentance' and that Floyd-ish instrumental section in 'In The Presence Of Enemies' were different for them).
Has to be 'Scarsick' for me, of the ones I heard. I liked 'The Perfect Element' quite a bit but this is not to my taste. They had something 'important' to say and that need to get a message across really harmed the music, IMHO.
Generally though, I've enjoyed most of the prog albums I got this year. Most of what I liked last year (Frost and The Flower Kings in particular) I kind of went off the boil about pretty quickly but that won't happen with this year's releases.
