I think Pawn Hearts is less cohesive. Maybe a 9/10 for me because of all the experimentation, but there are only a few moments throughout where I consider the music completely beautiful. H to He is much more solid.

oh man.....
as a non-VdGG fan per se.... I always thought H to He was a much
stronger album... it sure does get many more listens than Pawn Hearts
does at least...

Pawn Hearts for me too. H to He is all fine and dandy - except for Killer which, when all is said and done, is a little bit silly.

...kind of ambiguity here; PH here stands for "Pawn Hearts", but also can be interpreted as if your preference is Peter Hammill (PH) in general...
Both albums are great. I prefer "H to He..." for some reasons...

Pawn Hearts is the greatest album of VDGG, and absolutely a masterpiece of prog music, but personally I prefer H to He

"H to He, Who am the Only One" has more memorable songs. It's just more melodic ( in good sense of meaning ).

I prefer Pawn Hearts.
However both albums are great. It's pity, that since then they hasn't recorded anything as good as their 68-70's output.

Hmm, there must be something to VDGG, as so many people like them (the Sixth Formers were playing them on the Common Room hifi today!) but I just can't see it. I think it's Hamill's voice and vocal style that turns me off; I quite like the music.
