^ Thanks, Jared. That makes perfect sense to me. And there's a lot of music I still value, and know very well, so I feel no desire to ever listen to it again, at least not externally as it may pop into my head. Yes' Fragile is one of those for me. Some stuff I used to love but I played to death and now don't have fond memories. Some stuff I used to love is just not of any interest to me any longer.
------------------------------------ By the way, I had a go with Ian's list. I included Wurdah Itah (better thought of as a Christian Vander album) methinks in one where I included before, but like Ian, I won't here. I like all of the bands even if SMM/ZMM I have listened to less. So easy to rearrange with a template once someone has already listed the albums. I want to do one more to it. Heck, I even like Magma's Merci. And I am adding Von Zamla for the Samla Mamas Manna family. I love Von Zamla. Debut: 1. Magma - Kobaia 2. Univers Zero - 1313 3. Henry Cow - Legend 4. Art Zoyd - Symphonie Pour le Jour Ou Bruleront les Cites 5. Samla Mammas Manna - Samla Mammas Manna Second: 1. Univers Zero - Heresie 2. Magma - 1001 Centrigrade 3. Art Zoyd - Musique Pour l'Odyssee 4. Henry Cow - Unrest 5. Samla Mammas Manna - Maltid Third: 1. Art Zoyd - Generation Sans Futur 2. Univers Zero - Ceux du Dehors 3. Magma - Mekanik Destrukiw Kommandoh 4. Henry Cow - In Praise of Learning 5. Samla Mammas Manna - Klossa Knapitatet Fourth: 1. Henry Cow - Western Culture 2. Art Zoyd - Phase IV 3 Univers Zero - Uzed 4. Magma - Kohntarkosz * not heard: Samla Mammas Manna - Gregory Allan Fitzpatrick's Snorungarnas Symfoni Fifth: 1. Art Zoyd - Les Espaces Inquiets 2. Magma - Udu Wudu 3. Univers Zero - Heatwave * not heard: Zamla Mammaz Manna - Schlagerns Mystik Sixth: 1. Art Zoyd - Le Mariage du Ciel et de l'Enfer 2. Magma - Attahk 3. Zamla Mammaz Manna - Familjesprickor 4. Univers Zero - The Hard Quest Seventh: 1. Art Zoyd - Berlin 2. Von Zamla - Zamlaranamma 3. Magma - Merci Edited by Logan - November 03 2024 at 14:26 |

Greg: You raise a lot of interesting points there, but because of (all of) our historical attachments to the bands you initially included, it is practically impossible to keep nostalgia at bay when deciding. SEBtP & CttE in particular are so heavily welded to the 16/17 year old Jared who thought they were 'out of this world' that they have remained at the top of the tree ever since and it would be almost impossible to dislodge them... they are fixtures and fittings of my Prog mind.
So, on the one hand I would find it almost impossible to objectively say that in 2024 I prefer Atom Heart Mother (which I discovered when I was about 18 and realised it was a lot more interesting than 'The Final Cut'), yet on the other hand, I sometime wonder why I actually still listen to SEBtP at all... am I really listening to it? I can't say that I am, because it's probably years since I actually noticed anything new in it that I'd missed and although it will always remain in my top 3 albums of all time... do I really need to play it again? Saturation point was reached many years ago...

I think that's mature, Jared, and you're not the only one. I recognise a kind of ridiculous futility in the exercise myself. And If Peter were still around I might get a post about making sport of art. Of course he had a good point, but I approach these from a rather different perspective. When voting in a poll or doing some like this, I tend to go with my feeling at that moment. I don't think in terms of best, more "Which of these would I most like to listen to right now?" Or I go on a whim, or toss a mental coin. Then toss that mental coin again if I don't like the result. At different times I would favour different ones, and what most interests me now commonly is not what would have most interested me in past years. As people we change all the time, and I choose based on the feelings of the moment at the time of choosing, not how it might have affected me yesterday, or how I liked it ten years ago etc. I actually have been kind of surprised to pretty commonly see people write something like, "I am voting for x because it was my first favourite of these", or "It my first of these so it gets my vote." I understand the nostalgia factor, but I'm more inclined to go with ones that I fell for more recently, played most recently, or in the case of ones where I have know all for a long time, just based on my whim or mood of the time. Today I might well list those in a different order ( I'm please to see people who appreciate a variety of albums across bands and don't just go with a "favourite band" no matter what album it is up against. I was Watching My Kitchen Rules 10 last night, an Australian program, and Manu, who is one of the food judges said something like, "I love food. And if I don't love a certain food now, I learn to love it" is response to someone with very limited tastes. I'm pleased to see the lack of band fanboyism that is apparent across lists. Mind you, those are five big name classics. If I did, say, Dream Theater and Univers Zero, then it would be more divided into factions. |

I've looked at this thread Greg and looked again.... but I find it next to impossible to rate these albums as its continually having the greatest bands and many of the greatest albums competing against each other. I can't put them in an order because it often depends on my mood (or even phase of life!) as to which I would choose, but I'd rather not do without any of them... except for some of the later Crimson ones, maybe?
I know that probably sounds very lame, because everyone else seems to have managed it without too much trouble, but you can't ask me to choose between CttE, SEBTP & TaaB!!?? They are the best albums by all three bands!!

Awesome to see people coming up with others for lists, and yes, I don;t take the exercise very seriously, but for me it's a fun and strangely rewarding challenge. List-making helps me re-focus. It;s quite like meditation for me, only not. :) That is the way I at first wanted to do it and should have stuck with the plan. I will try one with Caravan and Camel later (two serious classics) but wanted to do an artist one. While all of these were making albums in the 70s up, it is not a classic Prog list like the other two I presented. It's Bowie, Bush, Hammill and Wyatt. I then thought of adding Peter Gabriel, doofus (sp?) forgetting, but I am running late.
Debuts: 1. The Kick Inside (Kate Bush) 2. Fool's Mate (Peter Hammill) 3. The End of an Ear (Robert Wyatt) 4. David Bowie (David Bowie) Seconds: 1. Rock Bottom (Robert Wyatt) 2. Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night (Peter Hammill) 3. Lionheart (Kate Bush) 4. Space Oddity (David Bowie) Thirds: 1. The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage (Peter Hammill) 2. The Man Who Sold the World (David Bowie) 3. Never for Ever (Kate Bush) 4. Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard (Robert Wyatt) Fourths: (the hardest yet and in no way definitive) 1. Hunky Dory (David Bowie) 2. The Dreaming (Kate Bush) 3. In Camera (Peter Hammill) 4. Old Rottenhat (Robert Wyatt) Fifths: 1. Hounds of Love (Kate Bush) 2. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars (David Bowie) 3. Nadir's Big Chance (Peter Hammill) 4. Dondestan (Robert Wyatt) Sixths: 1. Aladdin Sane (David Bowie) 2. Shleep (Robert Wyatt) 3. The Sensual World (Kate Bush) 4. Over (Peter Hammill Sevenths: 1. Cuckooland (Robert Wyatt) 2. The Future Now (Peter Hammill) 3. Pinups (David Bowie) 4. The Red Shoes (Kate Bush) Eights: 1. Aerial (Kate Bush) 2. Comicopera (Robert Wyatt) 3. pH7 (Peter Hammill) 4. Diamond Dogs (David Bowie) Ninths: 1. A Black Box (Peter Hammill) 2. Young Americans (David Bowie) - not heard: Director's Cut (Kate Bush) - archival (I would not count): Radio Experiment Rome, February 1981 (Robert Wyatt) Tenths: 1. 50 Words for Snow (Kate Bush) 2. Station to Station (David Bowie) - not very familair with: Sitting Targets (Peter Hammill) - collaboration not familiar with: For the Ghosts Within (Wyatt/Atzmon/Stephen) Elevenths: 1. Low (David Bowie) (great album, imo) - don't know: Enter K (peter Hammill) n/a Kate Bush don't know, don't count archival: '68 (Robert Wyatt) Twelths: 1. 'Heroes' (David Bowie) - deserving of top spot even with no competition - don't know: Loops and Reels (Peter Hammill) - don't know enough and collab: KiTsuNe / Brian the Fox (The Future Eve & Robert Wyatt) |

I have to say that this is not what I find to be the most meaningful, but okay, I don't have much better to do tonight, so I'll meet the OP as far as I can manage / find it good to do. That is to mention all my fond-ofs in more or less chronological order, and I surely prefer to include ELP. Also, it is a bit fun and challenging afterall, so here it goes: Debuts: The Piper, ItCotCK, ELP Seconds: A Saucerful, Trespass, Tarkus Thirds: Benefit, The Yes Album, Nursery Cryme, Trilogy Fourths: Aqualung, Fragile, Foxtrot, Brain Salad Fifths: Lark's Tongues, SEbtP, TaaB, CttE Sixths: Meddle, A Passion Play, The Lamb Sevenths: Red Eighths: TDSotM Nineths: WYWHere Tenths: Animals Elevenths: The Wall

I totally get you actually, and I actually do feel the same. And I can be something of a perfectionist. I made list below of some other bands and choosing one over others is often so arbitrary. Anyway.... ---------------------------------------------------------- I do like to be flexible, so if people, like Richard, want to add other bands or do other lists, feel free. This is meant to be a fairly fun exercise. I'll do a few of my favourite classic bands: Can, Gentle Giant, Magma, Soft Machine, Tangerine Dream, Van der Graaf Generator. Even though the orders could be very significantly changed, this is what I did right now. Debuts: 1. Magma [Kobaïa] (Magma) 2. Monster Movie (Can) 3. Gentle Giant (Gentle Giant) 4. The Soft Machine (The Soft Machine) 5. Electronic Meditation (Tangerine Dream) 6. The Aerosol Grey Machine (Van der Graaf Generator) Seconds: 1. Tago Mago (Can) 2. The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other (Van der Graaf Generator) 3. 1001° centigrades (Magma) 4. Acquiring the Taste (Gentle Giant) 5. Volume Two (Soft Machine) 6. Alpha Centauri (Tangerine Dream) Thirds: 1. Third (Soft Machine) 2. Ege Bamyası (Can) 3. Zeit (Tangerine Dream) 4. Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh (Magma) 5. H to He Who Am the Only One (Van der Graaf Generator) 6. Three Friends (Gentle Giant) Fourths: 1. Pawn Hearts (Van der Graaf Generator) 2. Soundtracks (Can) 3. Atem (Tangerine Dream) 4. Fourth (Soft Machine) 5. Ẁurdah Ïtah (Magma) 6. Octopus (Gentle Giant) Fifths: 1. Phaedra (Tangerine Dream) 2. Future Days (Can) 3. Köhntarkösz (Magma) 4. Godbluff (Van der Graaf Generator) 5. In a Glass House (Gentle Giant) 6. Fifth (Soft Machine) Six is enough for me for now. And often those positions could be shared. By the way, if people think I'm doing a poor job with topics, and I know I do, feel free to make suggestions for improvement, and make better thought out topics yourself. Leaving out your favourites, ones you think important, or should be there is not meant as any sleight. Often offence comes from some misunderstanding of intent; the wrong assumptions. It's only rock & roll but I like it. I would hope more people would understand how I roll by now. Edited by Logan - November 02 2024 at 10:54 |

Hi, and sorry, Richard. No offence or sleight was intended in omitting ELP. It wasn't because I didn't consider them important enough, and I do consider it to be one of the most seminal and quintessential bands in Prog, but it's more about my ignorance as after the first five albums my knowledge becomes very spotty. And frankly, beyond the first five albums I didn't think that many others would be that interested. Personally, I would only want to consider the Emerson, Lake & Palmer albums. That is ELP to me.
I thought covering five of the big names with long careers would be good to start and more would be onerous for this exercise. This was not intended to be about what's most important (I did aim to cover five big names with many albums) and certainly not about what's most important to me. I would have loved to include Tangerine Dream, Van der Graaf Generator, Magma etc. I think what I should have said in the OP is feel free to add any other classic bands to the mix. By the way, I also considered adding Rush, but then that wasn't there at Prog's beginning. Please don't read too much into it from me, as I usually make less than satisfying topics (I am often not pleased with how they turn out), and I have received many complaints due to omissions over the years. I expect others could do much better. Maybe I should just do topics that focus on my particular favourites, but I do have this desire to reach out to more diverse tastes. I am sorry that time's have been so tough for you, you handed in your notice after so many years and are now considering leaving PA. I've felt like you've been a good forum friend to me here, someone I have enjoyed having many discussions with over the years, and have really appreciated your presence. I wish you well. And if you ever want to vent about life or talk about problems, my PM box is open. Take care of yourself and all the best. If this forum is an added stress, it does make sense to at least take a break from it. I've needed to before, and yesterday was a pretty horrible day for me too due to some family business. I like to unwind and refocus here, but this forum definitely can be a significant added source of stress, especially when dealing with complaints and dissatisfaction. - Greg By the way, I really like ELP's debut. And Trilogy was one of the the first Prog albums I heard as a child and is an album I was in love with when I returned to Prog in a big way in the early 2000s. It's not a band I listen to much now, but then I can say that of Genesis, Yes and Jethro Tull (unlike, say, VdGG, Tangerine Dream, Magma, KC, Pink Floyd, a later one like Art Zoyd, and many others).
