Comparing the albums of Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes by order of release. Feel free to cover as many of these, and more, if you like, and you need not do all five albums from each. I plan to do a second edition with some other big names like VdGG and GG. I chose 11 for my cgoices to go up to The Wall specifically. Pink Floyd and King Crimson are my favourites generally of these, but of course it also depends on which specific releases we are comparing. In some cases choosing the order was a toss-up. Some years I love all, others only one or two. My original choice of doing 11 by Genesis, JT, KC, PF, Yes could have gone better. No sleight to nay other band (say with ELP I know and like very little by the band and so it's my ignorance). Mind you, if I were just focusing on my faves, then probably only KC and Pink Floyd would have been listed. And I have rarely listened to Pink Floyd in over 25 years. Of big names, I'd rather do VdGG, Magma and a host of others than Genesis and Yes based on my interests. I could have ignored the thread I suppose and it may well that my post will be considered trolling. I'm not having a good week though and now a bit pissed that ELP are no longer considered important enough to be incuded in a discussion like this. They are still very much a 'big six' band. I think it is possible to include them on the basis that Pictures at An Exhibition and Emerson,Lake and Powell are in the running order. That still only makes 11 albums so maybe Three To The Power Of Three could be a twelth as 2 of them were in that band. So it could be 1. Emerson, Lake and Palmer 2. Tarkus 3. Richard, If ELP is included, their debut album and 2nd album, Tarkus would take the top spot in my list with the other bands included in this poll. I will come back to respond, but starting with the Yes Album, Yes is going to run up a number of top rankings per release. |

Hi, and sorry, Richard. No offence or sleight was intended in omitting ELP. It wasn't because I didn't consider them important enough, and I do consider it to be one of the most seminal and quintessential bands in Prog, but it's more about my ignorance as after the first five albums my knowledge becomes very spotty. And frankly, beyond the first five albums I didn't think that many others would be that interested. Personally, I would only want to consider the Emerson, Lake & Palmer albums. That is ELP to me. I thought covering five of the big names with long careers would be good to start and more would be onerous for this exercise. This was not intended to be about what's most important (I did aim to cover five big names with many albums) and certainly not about what's most important to me. I would have loved to include Tangerine Dream, Van der Graaf Generator, Magma etc. I think what I should have said in the OP is feel free to add any other classic bands to the mix. By the way, I also considered adding Rush, but then that wasn't there at Prog's beginning. Please don't read too much into it from me, as I usually make less than satisfying topics (I am often not pleased with how they turn out), and I have received many complaints due to omissions over the years. I expect others could do much better. Maybe I should just do topics that focus on my particular favourites, but I do have this desire to reach out to more diverse tastes. I am sorry that time's have been so tough for you, you handed in your notice after so many years and are now considering leaving PA. I've felt like you've been a good forum friend to me here, someone I have enjoyed having many discussions with over the years, and have really appreciated your presence. I wish you well. And if you ever want to vent about life or talk about problems, my PM box is open. Take care of yourself and all the best. If this forum is an added stress, it does make sense to at least take a break from it. I've needed to before, and yesterday was a pretty horrible day for me too due to some family business. I like to unwind and refocus here, but this forum definitely can be a significant added source of stress, especially when dealing with complaints and dissatisfaction. - Greg By the way, I really like ELP's debut. And Trilogy was one of the the first Prog albums I heard as a child and is an album I was in love with when I returned to Prog in a big way in the early 2000s. That is to mention all my fond-ofs in more or less chronological order, and I surely prefer to include ELP. Awesome to see people coming up with others for lists, and yes, I don;t take the exercise very seriously, but for me it's a fun and strangely rewarding challenge. List-making helps me re-focus. I've looked at this thread Greg and looked again.... but I find it next to impossible to rate these albums as its continually having the greatest bands and many of the greatest albums competing against each other. I can't put them in an order because it often depends on my mood (or even phase of life!) as to which I would choose, but I'd rather not do without any of them... except for some of the later Crimson ones, maybe? I know that probably sounds very lame, because everyone else seems to have managed it without too much trouble, but you can't ask me to choose between CttE, SEBTP & TaaB!!?? They are the best albums by all three bands!! ------------- Music has always been a matter of energy to me. I think that's mature, Jared, and you're not the only one. I recognise a kind of ridiculous futility in the exercise myself. And If Peter were still around I might get a post about making sport of art. Of course he had a good point, but I approach these from a rather different perspective. When voting in a poll or doing some like this, I tend to go with my feeling at that moment. I don't think in terms of best, more "Which of these would I most like to listen to right now?" Or I go on a whim, or toss a mental coin. Then toss that mental coin again if I don't like the result. :lol: At different times I would favour different ones, and what most interests me now commonly is not what would have most interested me in past years. As people we change all the time, and I choose based on the feelings of the moment at the time of choosing, not how it might have affected me yesterday, or how I liked it ten years ago etc. I actually have been kind of surprised to pretty commonly see people write something like, "I am voting for x because it was my first favourite of these", or "It my first of these so it gets my vote." I understand the nostalgia factor, but I'm more inclined to go with ones that I fell for more recently, played most recently, or in the case of ones where I have know all for a long time, just based on my whim or mood of the time. Today I might well list those in a different order ( I'm please to see people who appreciate a variety of albums across bands and don't just go with a "favourite band" no matter what album it is up against. I was Watching My Kitchen Rules 10 last night, an Australian program, and Manu, who is one of the food judges said something like, "I love food. And if I don't love a certain food now, I learn to love it" is response to someone with very limited tastes. I'm pleased to see the lack of band fanboyism that is apparent across lists. Mind you, those are five big name classics. Greg: You raise a lot of interesting points there, but because of (all of) our historical attachments to the bands you initially included, it is practically impossible to keep nostalgia at bay when deciding. SEBtP & CttE in particular are so heavily welded to the 16/17 year old Jared who thought they were 'out of this world' that they have remained at the top of the tree ever since and it would be almost impossible to dislodge them... they are fixtures and fittings of my Prog mind. So, on the one hand I would find it almost impossible to objectively say that in 2024 I prefer Atom Heart Mother (which I discovered when I was about 18 and realised it was a lot more interesting than 'The Final Cut'), yet on the other hand, I sometime wonder why I actually still listen to SEBtP at all... am I really listening to it? I can't say that I am, because it's probably years since I actually noticed anything new in it that I'd missed and although it will always remain in my top 3 albums of all time... do I really need to play it again? Saturation point was reached many years ago...

And there's a lot of music I still value, and know very well, so I feel no desire to ever listen to it again, at least not externally as it may pop into my head. Yes' Fragile is one of those for me. Some stuff I used to love but I played to death and now don't have fond memories. Some stuff I used to love is just not of any interest to me any longer. ------------------------------------ By the way, I had a go with Ian's list. I included Wurdah Itah (better thought of as a Christian Vander album) methinks in one where I included before, but like Ian, I won't here. I like all of the bands even if SMM/ZMM I have listened to less. So easy to rearrange with a template once someone has already listed the albums. I want to do one more to it.
