There are so many kinds of pop fans, I believe. Maybe the indie pop, art pop, alt. pop (and chamber pop and avant pop crowds)... Like the hipsters with their disparaging ironic comments about many acts. I generally might think the Indie music crowd. This is from over a decade ago...
I could imagine them listening to ELP ironically. |

Not on the list, but from my experience? Pop fans have to be number one in this regard. I know there are always exceptions, but again, just from my own experience.

Personally I don't want to listen to 'minimalism' but is that close minded then. I enjoy the pomposity and grandiosity of prog and don't want it dialled down. The problem is that prog bands don't always play prog. We often have a hard time of identifying what is prog and what isn't though.

Or they don't sound *exactly* like their old material and any deviation from that is seen as musical blasphemy.

I think the worst type of the "close-minded proggers" imo is those who diminish all prog albums that were released after 1980 and aren't British (or British and Italian).

Goths and Metalheads generally are more community orientated. I remember going to Whitby way back (the Goths spiritual home due to Bram Stokers Dracula) and they are completely harmless and just a little weird. The most famous Goth I can think of is Siouxsie Sioux but I never considered Siouxsie and the Banshees a 'Goth band'. They were very much part of the British punk scene of the late seventies but tracks such as Israel and Peek A Boo showed quite an arty approach as well. They were a sophisticated band with a great drummer in Budgie. Metal heads have loads of festivals and like to congregate. Prog fans are generally more nerdy and introverted and happy to be alone. I also see prog fans as more 'independent' minded and self reliant. They are like cats in that respect maybe!

Years and years ago I was part of a metal board and let's just say they were quite some of the most close minded (and regressive) people I've ever come across....and this was before Twitter was a thing!

The first paragraph is so spot on I will applaud you The stuff about foreign language. Well I can only speak for myself but I would also rather bands sung in their own language. I was not always aware of this even being a thing though. I had no mentor to show me the way and to explain to me that PFM's original albums are so wonderful. I know this now. My first inkling of the potential and power of using one's native tongue was Anglagard's Hybris album. I still much prefer this to the other 2 albums they released which I think were mainly intrumental. I now listen to quite a lot of prog with non English singing. Bring it on!

I'm the most close minded music listener of all. I don't listen to anything I don't want to.

I'm not sure why you would single out Bing Crosby. If anything I would say maybe Elvis Presely. Then again maybe you aren't being 100 % serious.

^ On the contrary, Prog fans are among the most open mined fans. They have to be or they wouldn't appreciate prog. Jazz, 20th Century classical, folk, blues. It's quite clear.

Prog Fans are vote as #1 and I know why!!!!! .
For many years I was a very closed minded fan, even though I came from being a new wave and hard rock fan in the 80's, however I got into prog at age 13-14 by my early 20's, I did not listen to anything but prog or jazz ( love ECM and traditional Jazz). I was extremely hatefully for everything else!. them I got into Dream Theater, Symphony X, Meshuggah, Fate Warning due to the progressive rock reference them I started listening to Death, Thrash and Symphony Metal bands. I still can't get into Black Metal unless it is a mix of Doom and Symphony Black Metal. I can't listen to the singers. Again in the late 90's early 2000 I started getting into Post punk and alternative bands like the Smiths, The cure, The church. I don't know I just feel that it has helped to appreciate and respect all time of rock and music in general. Prog is still my favorite however, but I like to give a chance to music that is simpler and easy listening and has nothing to do with prog. Edited by DarksideofAbel - June 20 2024 at 16:05 |

I'm not a fan of Bing Crosby, but count me in as a close-minded elevator music playlist designer, as I can count on one hand the number of Avant-RIO artists I actually like.

I think Bing Crosby fans are the most close-minded of all music fans with elevator music playlist designers a close second.
But then, who are the most open-minded of music listeners? Avant-RIO? |
