I decided to go with the decadent and voted as follows: 1. Bike Kid: The Musical - totally fun and out there, just made me feel away from any negative thoughts except being immersed in the song. 2. Kreng : Wrak - For some reason I got attached to the slow moving and haunting atmosphere and even after repeated listening, I still enjoyed it. . 3. I will be completely honest here. I cant remember my vote for this one as I was distracted and was taken away from the forums for a while. I had been pondering on 2 choices for my 3rd pick. Light Field Reverie - All Roads Lead Home or Quicksilver Messenger Service - The Fool.

^ Actually, mine is just Lewian's second PA account so he can put up more of his weird musical choices in one and the same poll...

No. 1 for me is clearly Kreng -Wrak... suitkees has the hand for the things I love really. No. 2 Dissòi Logòi - fascinating relaxed and atmospheric piece of music. No. 3 is really hard. Gomez didn't quite live up to the first go when listening to it twice more. Light Field Reverie made more of an impression after it had passed me by the first time. Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen didn't quite arrive at voting level... maybe too little time to give it at least twice the "total listening" it probably requires. Ravel... maybe a bit too sentimental for me. Quicksilver Messenger Service - lovely hippie stuff, some really nice guitar work there, doesn't miss no. 3 by far. Allman Brothers - I've got to be in the venue and see it live. Mermen - good sound and approach but could've put more ideas into the length. At the end Karl Seglem it is.

Here are my top three after quite a bit of deliberation:
1. Meredith Monk - Anthem 2. Dissòi Logòi -Amptruabat Redamptruabat 3. Karl Seglem - Spingar fra fjord I wanted to put Ravel in there too, but I decided at the last minute that I'm a bit biased towards his music since he is a favorite. There were some excellent entries this time around and I had a hard time choosing.

It is really a great treat to listen to the nominations playlist; for me there is no weak moment in there. Everything has something intriguing, beautiful and/or interesting for the ears to offer, so it was not easy to trim it down to a selection of three. Musically speaking, I think I could vote for Dissòi Logòi, Meredith Monk & the Vocal Ensemble and Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen. But all three are very much in the contemporary music domain (well, Dissòi Logòi probably wouldn't be catalogued there, but where would they be?) and I like my votes to reflect a bit the eclecticism of both the suggestions put up here as of my own musical tastes. In some way I could not make a pass on Marius Popp and Gomez, because it was a sheer joy to listen to these pieces too... So, a bit of contemporary music, a bit of jazz rock stewed in synthesizers, and a bit of indie rock with a solid bluesy foundation... But which one then to choose from those first three...? Je ne me tairai jamais, jamais is probably for me the most intriguing and fascinating piece of music, but it needs a lot of attention: sit down, listen, eventually read the text at the same time... It really is great, but probably not for every day. Amptruabat Redamptruabat is enchantingly beautiful in its apparent simplicity, and at the same time it is so rich. But in the end, neither of these two are as emotionally captivating as the Anthem by Meredith Monk... So, my votes go to: - Meredith Monk & The Vocal Ensemble - Anthem - Marius Popp - Inscripție - Gomez - Rie's Wagon |

Difficult task. There were many tracks I really liked, but I decide to go for three very different ones. And so my votes go to: Meredith Monk - Anthem (very poetic piece, and the circumstances under which it was made warm my heart) The Allman Brothers - Mountain Jam (the biggest grower, very intense jam with some quite extraordinary guitar work) Karl Seglem - Springar frå fjord (especially because of the folk sections, but in general it's a very interesting style combination) Honorable mentions which I could also have voted for: Gomez - Rie's Wagon (pleasantly no-nonsense rock music with great playing and a great chorus) |

I second that. I myself am incapable to even recognize the time signature of a song (counting is not my thing...), so I have to stick to impressions and musical references, but it is a real pleasure to read musicological comments on the songs posted here! Have been away a couple of days (hiking, partying, hiking again, partying again...) and have to listen to the nominations again - will do that tomorrow. The final top 3 decision won't be easy...

Ok, I have listened to every piece, and here's to you my podium:
1) Mermen - Burn. I like it very much. It sounds proggy. Industrial prog. 2) Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen - Je ne me tairai jamais, Jamais. This is cultured music. Dissonant. Avantguarde. Close to lyrical opera. 3) Quicksilver Honorable mentions: 4) Marius Popp 5) Gomez 6) Buffalo Springfield 7) Allman Brothers 8) Ravel (I love Concert for the left hand) Edited by jamesbaldwin - January 01 2021 at 16:12 |

I know, I know! But one must be flexible....I absolutely cannot decide an order from 1-3 of my top 3, one of my "Hon Mentions," (the Ravel), is only because I can't honestly say I haven't heard it before (and that is always one of my criteria for what I consider a fair vote). So here are my 3 favourites of the lot, in no particular order. As always, opened my ears to new music, everyone's selections have merit.
Mermen “Burn” Love the cover artwork, before even listening. Begins with some clangy (but not loud) guitar sounds and percussion, gradually builds with some picking and keyboards. Nice flourishes on guitar. And here come the surf bits after about 3 minutes, echo-y guitar and continued washes of sound underneath. Gets a bit spacier about halfway in, with guitar wingdings and coily, drainy sounds. They are definitely getting lost in space about 8 minutes in. Music seems to end, but there are blops yet to be heard, if you listen carefully. Then another sound completely begins, with tambourine sounds, more wobbly guitars, perhaps this is where they find themselves once to trip out there has concluded, a pretty and light place, which fades slowly away. Dissòi Logòi “Amptruabat Redamptruabat” This begins with some high flute, solo, treated with mild echo. Joining in at about a minute, it’s underscored by sustained notes on a keyboard, or are they a vocal? Hand drums and some bells join in with some quiet guitar and meltingly beautiful violin (or is it something like a mizmar?) in a Middle Eastern sort of style. More flute or ocarina-type instrument, still accompanied by the guitar and some twangy strings as well. Male vocal and some sustained (backwards?) guitar-type notes. There are some zils (hand cymbals) way back in the mix. This is fantastic, gotta say. Gorgeous gypsy-style guitar lead and then some double-picking, with flourishes. The possibly backwards guitar or violin through effects re-emerges. Did I say this was fantastic? The flute and guitar double on the same melody and the violin/mizmar thing comes back in an exotic, along with the flute/pipe fluttering about. Yep, fantastic. Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble and Alarm Will Sound “Anthem” Begins with sounding like being in a studio setting (and so it is, when I leave my document and look at the video). Woodwinds start, then abruptly end, where piano comes in. I like that it takes it’s time, with the various musicians quietly entering. There are also vibes first played with a bow, then in the more traditional way. Some quiet vocalization begins (and is joined from time to time by others) and flute accompanies here, then reeds, then violins and cellos. This is very sophisticated, hypnotic and lovely music, with a feeling of the divine. Hon Mention: Krystian Zimerman The Cleveland Orchestra Pierre Boulez “Ravel: Piano Concerto in G Major, M. 83 - 2. Adagio assai” Just beautiful. I don’t know if I’ve heard this particular version or not, but am a big fan of Ravel’s works. Solo piano is joined after a time with flute, with the orchestra very quiet in the background, then back to piano, with is more up in the mix than previously. The piano continues and the orchestra swells underneath. Flute returns for a bit. This just goes by so quickly for me, doesn’t feel at all like over 9 minutes. So subtle and gorgeous. Hon Mention: Karl Seglem “Springar fra fjord” Begins with violins (or maybe nyckelharpa?) and a drum sound, kind of like a tabor. Then the sounds get more full, is there guitar or the like underlying? Flutes or whistles kick in, this is quite enjoyable to my ear. Much more of a world music feel than I was expecting from your intro. Saxophone comes in, soloing. The first note or two, almost echoes the sound of a bagpipe, as it moves from the more world sound into jazz realm with drums and organ or piano underlay. Becomes more experimental in feel as it gets deeper into the piece. There is a bit of a duet with I’m not sure what instrument, but then kicks back in with violin or nyckelharpa and back we go to the world music. Lovely!
