Thank you all! I think I have enough stuff now...

P.S.: There was no romantic intention... It's just pedagogy (do you write it that way?) and I think there was another thread on "romantic prog rock", but You've given me some very good suggestions

These are some prog tracks I choose to introduce people to the art form (of course the choice depends on the person).

21st Century Schizoid Man -- King Crimson (classic)

Back in NYC -- Genesis (probably the only "punk"-sounding song in 7/8)

Sealion -- Jethro Tull (definitely depends on the person you're giving the CD to)

A Time and a Place, Karn Evil 9 (1st, Part 2) -- ELP

Of course, the choice is yours.

Always worked for me (glances down)...

The concensus seems to be to "ease" the listener into prog with more mainstreamy stuff, then get more complex as they get used to it...good call.

Although, funny enough, one album that always gets raves from my non-prog friends is Anekdoten's Vemod...go figure.

I think another thing to keep in mind is what this person is already a fan of...for a Metallica fan, go with DT, Threshold, Dead Soul Tribe...

The other approach is to go with things that they would be more likely to recognize, things that have gotten radio airplay...

Rush-Tom Sawyer, Closer to the Heart, Spirit of the Radio
Yes-Long Distance Runaround, I've Seen All Good People
ELP-Karn Evil 9 (1st Impression Part 2), Lucky Man
Genesis-Abacab, No Reply At All, Taking It All To Hard
Kansas-Carry On Wayward Son, Point of Know Return
Peter Gabriel-Games Without Frontiers,Solsbury Hill
Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here, Money, Mother, On The Turning Away

...people are more likely to react positively to something they are familiar with...you then find out which tracks they liked more, and go from there...if they liked Yes, start feeding them Gentle Giant and King Crimson, if they liked Rush go with A.C.T and Enchant, etc etc

Symphonic Prog: Album openers are usually easy to aquire, even though some of them are pretty weird. Here's some suggestions from me!

  • Yes - Close To The Edge
  • Emerson Lake & Palmer - The Endless Enigma
  • Gentle Giant - The Runaway
  • Genesis - Watcher Of The Skies
  • King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man
  • Steve Hackett - Ace Of Wands
  • Pink Floyd - Shine On Your Crazy Diamond 1
  • Van Der Graaf Generator - Killer

Progressive Metal: Im pretty sure that if he like's a couple of the following track's, he'll love the other prog-metal bands too!

  • Dream Theater - Metropolis Part 1: The Miracle & The Sleeper
  • Dream Theater - The Glass Prison
  • Dream Theater - New Millenium
  • Symphony X - The Accolade
  • Symphony X - Through The Looking Glass
  • Symphony X - Egypt
  • Meshuggah - Future Breed Machine

Jazz-Rock/Fusion: Frank Zappa and Brand X should do the job!

  • Frank Zappa - Peaches En Regalia
  • Frank Zappa - Zoot Alures
  • Frank Zappa - Keep It Greasey
  • Brand X - Nuclear Burn
  • Brand X - Why Shold I Lend You Mine
  • Brand X - Black Moon
  • Gong - Expresso
  • Gong - Chandra
  • Soft Machine - Teeth

Prog-Folk: Jethro Tull!!!

  • Jethro Tull - A Passion Play part 1
  • Jethro Tull - Thick As a Brick part 1

------------------------------------------------------------ -----------------------------------------------

Add some of those tracks to your current track list, and im sure he will find out what he will like.

Good luck!

Something very melodic should work, I think. Nothing too extreme.

The live version of Thick as a Brick on the remastered version of TAAB might do the trick; I eased myself into the record by listening to that one first. It clocks at 10+ minutes if my memory serves me. Shouldn't be too hard to get through even for a newbie.

Winter Wine from Caravan's In The Land of Grey and Pink -so beautiful, even for the uninitiated ears. A nice introduction to Canterbury prog, as well.

Exiles by King Crimson perhaps...or The Night Watch. Or indeed Starless which does have such a magical beginning, she might even be able to endure the latter part of the song

Not too hard to think of some songs by Genesis, there are many that spring to mind: Entangled, Mad Man Moon, Firth of Fifth, Dancing with the Moonlit Knight...

Starship Trooper was the first Yes song that I got into when I bought The Yes Album -the first half of the song in particular. But then I'm weird that way as I really never got into Roundabout...most people, of course, do seem to find it catchy and engaging enough.

Right, that will do for starters.

I was made to love magic

The moon is made by some lame cooper and you can see the idiot has no idea about moons at all - Nikolay Gogol

Genesis - I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)
Gentle Giant - Playing The Game
Pink Floyd - Money
Rush - Closer To The Heart
Yes - Roundabout / Parallels

Nice and catchy prog tunes for newbies.

I doubt you can introduce him to Prog like that - I think the interest should be on his part.
For example, I have a good friend who is quite aware of Progressive and is always listening to when I talk about it, couple days ago he asked me on recommendations.
There is another friend of mine that knew of Dream Theater but never took them seriously, after some night talks he suddenly started listening to their CDs A LOT. Now he thinks Prog is the best thing ever, keeps talking about it and my friends keep saying 'Give him your CDs already!!!'.
That's also interest of his part.
Why do I think it is important? simply, in order to enter prog you need lots of patience and curiosity, and if that friend of yours isn't interested to he will abandon it after couple of minutes.

Also, I think you should give him complete albums, as a friend of mine one heard 'One Last Time', didn't find what's so interesting in DT until the moron heard the whole CD...

All in all, I'd suggest some easy prog metal stuff, like DT, Symphony X, Everygrey, Queensryche (Operation Mindcrime, especially), Liquid Tension Experiment
Prog Rock, well, I'll suggest  Camel's Snow Goose (I know I got into it in the first time), Moonmadness as well..
Yes - Close to the Edge..
King Crimson - ITCOCK, Red
IQ - Dark Matter
Marillion - Fugazi, Misplaced Childhood, Marbles, Seasons End
Genesis - Selling England...

That's it for now..

Ease her in with Roundabout, I Seen All Good People, Yours is No Disgrace, the fun happy songs by Yes that are still very progressive. Ya know, the ones that all college kids know and love. She should also enjoy Porcupine Tree for sure to start...hell, I started with Porcupine Tree and 500 bands later they are still my favorite. Then I'd go to...hmm, King Crimson possibly, Red has soem good catches, as does Discipline. If she's into metal, Pain of Salvation and Ark are musts. Opeth eventually. Then slowly the rest.

That's all I got.

EDIT: Oh, can't beat Pink Floyd.

IF there's a romantic intent, try some Porcupine Tree... Something like "...it's so erotic when your make-up runs" should work...

Actually may I ask...is this a genuine, altruistic endeavour to try and educate and illuminate, or is there some romantic intent?

Because if there is, you may be barking up the wrong tree......

Yes I think 32+ minutes of Cassandra Gemini is a pretty bracing introduction. I think the man wanted something a little easier on the ear....
