I its one of his few covers that doesnt look like a silly cartoon - but I guess that goes against what Zappa is all about - anyways....I like it

The variety on the early Zappa/Mothers albums is hard to beat. IMHO, the
essential Zappa weirdness comes through best on the "Burnt Weenie
Sandwich", "Uncle Meat" & "Weasles Ripped My Flesh" efforts. Many of
Zappa's best "legit" compositions such as "Igor's Boogie" and "Little House i
Used to Line In" are on these albums. And if it's the compositions you are
drawn to, the more contemporary "Jazz From Hell" is a great set of
wonderfully-weird, left-of-field instrumentals.

Frank Zappa - Hot rats:
1. Peaches en regalia (10/10)
2. Willie the pimp (6/10)
3. Son of Mister Green Genes (9/10)
4. Little umbrellas (9/10)
As for the rest...I didn't have the patience to finish listening to the rest... ...I have not listened enough to make a good judgement...
For me personel, "We're only in it for the money" was actually the right place to start. I am a fan of this album but I am not a fan of Zappa, so I think you can better take your advice from a real Zappa fan who recommends "Hot rats"/"Over-nite sensation"/"Grand wazoo"...
Has anyone ever noticed how the song "Grand wazoo" suddenly ends???? Some ending indeed

My first Zappa experience was listening to a CD (now out of print) that included both Apostrophe and Overnite Sensation albums. it totally blew my mind. In fact this is my favourite period (Roxy & Elsewhere and One size fit all are also from this Zappa/ Mothers phase), and it took me a while to get used to their earlier sound.
Nowadys, I own almost 40 Zappa cd's, so you can imagine that, for me, was worth the try!

Over Nite Sensation, Live at the Roxy and Onse Size fits all. I like this period and band the best.

mmm, I'm not that sure about hot rats as a starter or any FZ album in particular, because his work is so diversified that any album can be potentially "deceiving", if taken as a starting point...imagine listening to "The Grand Wazoo" and then to "Absolutely Free"...that can be confusing!!!! Anyway, remaining in FZ's (so-called) "jazz/rock" production, surely Hot Rats as well as The Grand Wazoo and Waka Jawaka are good starters...Hot Rats is probably the most accessible one.

I agree, with all of the Zappa studying I've done, I've found that You
Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 1 is the best thing to buy to begin
with Zappa, because it's the best overview of Zappa's career into one
album. Every main period of Zappa is featured on the double album
in top notch form. Start with this rather than a specific Zappa
period. You can pick your next buys from there, depending on what
you like from it.

I recommend 'you can't do that on stage VOL I', it covers ALOT of bases in context of time and styles and is very thoughtfully ordered in running sequence. There is the jazz of 'Big Swifty', the insane guitar solo on 'The torture never stops' and the diabolical humor everywhere.

It's absolutely true, "hot rats" is one of the best start to hear Zappa and I probably said "overnite sensation" and "apostrophe". There's a cd that contains these two albums (OS ad A) from RYKO label, I dont know if it still exist. Me, I've started with this 2 two in one album and it was a great debut!
There's also "stricly commercial" that cover the whole Zappa carreer but you know, I don't very like greatest hits and suppose that you guys feel the same way.

Quite good. But I'd recommend The Grand Wazoo instead. But all his albums from Grand Wazoo to One Size Fits All are good.
My absolute favorite Zappa studio album is Joe's Garage. But it is an aquired taste ...

zappa albums are all very different yet somehow all the same. it's really impossible to recommend one accurately. personally, Apostrophe was my intro to the Z man, and I love it still. it has really well executed music, and a fair dose of humor. the Nanook cycle is a true classic.

I always recommend live albums for Zappa newbies, because they offer many different songs from many different Zappa "phases":
- Make a Jazz Noise Here:
From the 1988 tour, features some stunning virtuosity. Might be too much for you if you're not a musician.
- Roxy & Elsewhere:
From the early 70's, very tight band in a laid back mood. Features great humor and madcap music.
- Zappa in New York:
From the late 70's, just before the release of Sheik Yerbouti. This is a very solid summary of his pre-disco/80's sound.
