This isn't ranting - this is arcane advice for those to whom the insides of a computer aren't a complete and utter mystery!

For basic operation (web, e-mail, office suite, etc.) Linux works wonderfully. For gaming you can check out Cedega (http://www.transgaming.com), but I believe that's not free. I would say if you have "a lot of different software for different things", you would have to see if there's a Linux counterpart, which doesn't always exist. Things like VMWare can be used to create a Windows environment within a Linux host, but that's an expensive solution. Easiest thing is to do what you're doing and stick with Win but avoid IE!
Re: dual boot: it's not that bad to setup if you install the Linux bootloader on your MBR and use it to either boot into your Linux distro or Win2k. There are Linux distros such as Ubuntu which are very user friendly and have virtually everything work "out of the box". |

Well, firstly, I play too many computer games that require Windows (although there are Linux versions of some of them around, but I don't really want to re-purchase them).
I could maybe in the future make a dual boot, but I've heard problems with such things and I don't know how much time and patience I have to actually get Linux and x-windows working. For browsing on the Internet, Linux is fine. I have a lot of Microsoft-based software though that I can't do much about. As you're a Linux user yourself, how severe is the portability issue with Windows software? Bearing in mind I don't just play games (I have a lot of different software for different things). |

I'm surprised your running Win2k given your apparent disdain for Microsoft. What's holding you back from making a switch? (There's usually always that one critical piece of software that only runs on Windoze )

Windows 2000 SP4
XP has caused so many problems on my mother's computer and I don't like all the features, so I'm sticking to 2000 for now. Firefox 2.0 worked, but the tabs didn't work how I wanted them and there was an issue with the URL Bar that annoyed me too. Tabs: I open a new tab, go to a site and it opens the page in my current tab, not the new one... very annoying! Also, it doesn't let me close tabs for some odd reason URL Bar: I cannot scroll down the list of websites on the arrow keys or use the page up/page down keys with it either. It's apparently designed for a 3-button mouse, which I do not use. I managed to find the install file for 1.5* and now I'm happy again. Plus they seem to still be updating 1.5*, as I had an update for it a few days ago, much to my surprise! Edited by Geck0 - November 16 2006 at 13:42 |

I'm running Firefox 1.5.0.3 on Linux and I'm happy with it. Plus, the 2.0 has not yet been included in my upgrades repository, so I'd have to actively work to install it anyway (for which I have neither the time nor the inclination). Geck0, are you running Windows? |

Now now Heavyfreight! I never plan on going back to Micro$oft Internet Explorer. It seems Mozilla are still updating 1.5 as well as 2.0, so I'm happy for now. Hopefully they'll sort out the issue with 2.0 soon.

Try IE7. It's a big improvement on IE6. Many of the advantages of Firefox now included. |

I use an Oyster card and in general I'm pretty happy with it - BUT - if you want to use the Croydon tramlink (I work in Croydon at the moment, for my sins) you're OK with a 4 zone card, but if the tram breaks down you either have to take a replacement bus (which takes hours) or buy an extra ticket because East Croydon is in zone 5.
Even more frustrating is the fact that none of the overground rail companies accept Oyster prepay, and some don't even accept it if you've got a pass on your Oystercard. Just try travelling from Paddington to Southall and see how far you get -
AND THE @#$%ING PRIVATISED RAIL COMPANIES GET @#$%ING MASSIVE SUBSIDIES FROM THE @#$%ING TAXPAYER AND CLAIM THAT THEY CAN'T @#$%ING ACCEPT OYSTER BECAUSE THE @#$%ING TECHNOLOGY'S TOO @#$%ING EXPENSIVE . MY @#$%ING ARSE!!!!!!
Which is something that I find fairly irritating.

I'm sick of seeing people that try to copy other people to look cool. It's everywhere you look in Puerto Rico and that's sad.
I also don't like people that lie just to pretend they know about something or lie about imposible things they do or pretend they have alot of things like big plasma TVs, mansion and other exagerated things like that just to make people think he/she is cool. |

Mozilla Firefox: it's an "alternative" Internet Browser, just like that one you're using (probably Micro$oft Internet Explorer), only usually better (except in the case of the new version, which annoys me).
I also get annoyed by people who use the word genre and do those silly little quote marks with their fingers when talking about genres. |

The new Firefox.
It's horrible! I went back to the old version and now as soon as I shut down the browser and re-open it, it's going to automatically update and I don't want it too! Very annoying. |
