I accidentally bought Shadow Gallery's Room IV back in my "judge an album by its cover" phase. I don't like it and I never listen to it.

By the way, this may be my favorite thread on PA right now.

On a good day I'd give Awake a hearty ****/*****. Nothing mind-blowing (though Space-Dye Vest came really close when I was a dumb teenager). Certainly a great album I'm glad to have listened to.

As for ELP - I feel similarly toward their debut - a hearty four stars. Nothing mind-blowing (though Take a Pebble came close when I was a young teenager).  Stars are meaningless.

As for Styx - f**k styx!

No, I'm just a sardonic a****le. I actually prefer Dream Theater's Awake to Shadow Gallery's...anything. Not by much.

Carved in Stone was an album by Shadow Gallery - MUCH better than Dream Theatre!

Yes, but collectively Prog Metal is one of the lowest rated genres on the site.

I find that rather unsurprising. Prog metal isn't necessarily appealing to the average 70s prog fan.

Also rather unsurprising, considering the other five bands are all classic prog bands that almost anybody here can agree on. Prog metal, on the other hand, is much more specific and will thus polarize more. It has nothing to do with Dream Theater themselves.

1. You're the only one who harps on that, and that's only because you made a shtick out of it because it annoys people.
2. They're not hated around here. A band whose highest-rated album is at 4.29 isn't hated. 4.29 is a very high rating.
3. Nothing destroys your credibility more than using the word "hater", except maybe the "you're all just jealous" and the "you all just don't understand it" argument. Observe progbethyname's post above for how it makes you sound like a desperate fanboy who can't defend his object of obsession with a good argument.

On a lighter note (because this thread needs more humor), gotta love the random Heino album.

When one is up against such highly regarded classics, there's no need to feel any persecution.

Hell yes they should. I can't believe they got voted into the Hall of Shame in the Battle of the Bands thread.
Oh, that thread is completely invalid.  It was controlled by the haters and the only purpose of it was for them to express their hatred of some of the most well known and respected Progressive bands ever.

That's funny - some of the most well known and respected progressive bands ever are in the Hall of Fame.

ya but everybody knows dtguitarfan is the biggest troll on this site (since Walter got banned, but at least he was fun)

I still haven't listened to Queensryche. I really need to check them out.

Honestly, O:M is their only album that isn't entirely mediocre

Yes, but collectively Prog Metal is one of the lowest rated genres on the site.  Go ahead, check it out.  Also, check this out:

That's right, they are the lowest rated band with over 1500 votes.  This is why DT fans harp on the fact that they are hated around here - because they have to work the hardest to get anywhere on the PA charts.  The fans have to overcome all the haters to get them anywhere on the charts.

Krautrock, Neo-Prog, Progressive Electronic, Zeuhl, Post/Math Rock, Indo/Raga, Exp/Post Metal are all rated lower than Progressive Metal in the Top-100 chart. Seven qualifying genres are "rated" lower than Progressive Metal, if the 19 subgenres were represented equally in the chart each would have 5 albums - Prog Metal has 6 while Neo Prog has 2, (hell, even Zeuhl beats Neo Prog) and Post Rock has none, so there is no way that Prog Metal can whine about being one of the lowest rated genres on this site.

Dream Theatre have TWO albums in the chart - Krautrock has none - an entire effing genre of some of the most important music in European Prog isn't even represented in the Top 100, Progressive Electronic has ONE album and that's Tangerine Dream (nice name) who now represents the whole of the of the German contribution to Progressive Rock over the past 45 years by one flippin' album. Like Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree also have TWO albums in the chart, and they rank lower than Dream Thehater according to the "haters" around here because the highest they can achieve is #93 to DT's #44 ... I don't see anyone carping on about how badly Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree are treated around here.

Someone has to be the lowest rated band with 1500 votes, being beaten by the top 5 Prog bands OF ALL TIME is nothing to be angry or upset about - you have to lower the number to 1400 to even see Rush make an appearance, 1300 and Porcupine Tree appear, you have to lower it to 1200 to see Camel join the ranks, no new additions for 1100, at 1000 we finally see Marillion. So there you are ... of the Top Ten most "popular" Prog artists of all time Dream Theater "rank" at #6 above Rush, PT, Camel and Marillion - with multimillion selling artists like Mike Oldfiled, Peter Gabriel and ELP and critically aclaimed artists such as Van der Graff Generator or Gentle Giant not even making a showing. Dream Theatre's achievements and placings on the PA are something to be PROUD of, not something to cry about. Of the modern era bands Dream Theatre are doing very well - better than PT and far better than Radiohead, Sigur Ros or The Mars Volta (all of whom sell more albums than DT).

The ONLY DT fan that harps on about it is you. So stop complaining and start celebrating. Stern Smile
What?

God...i don't even want to know how the post rock/math rock genre compares, hahaha

Highest rating is 4.42.
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?ssubgenres=32&syears=&scountries=&sminratings=0&smaxratings=0&sminavgratings=0&smaxresults=100&x=55&y=8#list
Of course, it only has 32 ratings...

I could go for some dustsucker now.... mmmmm such a good album.

And I don't know where you're getting that whole lowest rated thing. They have "low" ratings, just like you said, because they have over 1500 votes. But with weighting, Images & Word's 4.29 will DESTROY Dustsucker on every list. So with many of the "high" rated subgenres, they have very ephemeral scores. If I were to rate Dustsucker 1 star, the rating would plummet. If I would rate I&W 1 star (which I obviously won't given my 2000+ word 5 star review), the rating wouldn't change.

I'm afraid i've gone over the hill with ELP, let me explain in a formal manner.

Except for their debut (*****), Tarkus (*****), and maybe Still You turn Me On (***), i have never been pleased by emerson lake and palmer's somewhat nihilistic sound. I can't really notice ANY emotion wheni listen to "Karn Evil 9"...to me it's simply carnival music (pun intended), and most of their albums have alot of boring songs (specifically Tarkus).

Wait.... so you give Tarkus five stars and then say it has A LOT of boring songs? :S I thought you were only meant to give something five stars if you believe it's a complete masterpiece...

Anyway, I am surprised that ELP isn't rated higher. I haven't personally got into their sound yet (though I am young and life is long, so it's ok) but I do respect them deeply as musicians. They do lack the fine poetry that many other progressive bands have, but the instrumental passages are sometimes really interesting. On another note, I've never understood much of the love for some swedish progressive bands... which I guess sucks since I live in Sweden. I really want to go to the prog festival here in Stockholm but I don't like ANY of the bands AT ALL. And I listen mostly to prog... how ironic is that :D Änglagård is one of those bands that I never got into, Anekdoten and Trettiåriga Kriget are others. So I'm a bit surprised at how appreciated they are around here.

the SONG tarkus...
