Personally, when I listen to Primus I hear a huge Zappa and Crimson influence. If that's not prog enough, then I don't know what is.
But I really don't care if they're in the archives or not...either way, it won't change how much I like the band.

Woah, just a couple of days ago I was thinking of asking the same question, but I didn't want to sound stupid (How progressive are Primus... really?).
Anyway, I say 'yes'.
EDIT: Punk???

as much as i like the group... i'm not sure they're prog. if primus is
prog, then that opens the door for tons of other psuedo-punk and
-alternative groups to be considered prog too. To me, progressive rock
is the addition of jazz, classical, and ethnic musical styles into a
rock format where highly talented musicians play sophisticated,
intelligent rock music that is complex, challenging, and deep. I guess
its a definition in progress... but either way, I'm not entirely sure
Primus meets those standards. Claypool is, without any doubt, a
spectacular bassist. The band plays complex music. Despite this, I'm
not entirely impressed with the rest of the band and it does seem to be
a little too punk for my taste... most of their songs are really jams
based off of a highly complex Claypool slap-bass riffs that go on and
on until the song comes to an end. I'm not saying the band is bad...
but I'm not so sure they're prog, so I'm (reluctantly) going to vote no.
And Claypool needs to shut up. He can't sing. Would somebody tell him this already?

If Beefheart and Zappa are accepted as prog, then Primus should NOT be left out !! Claypool are one of the best bassplayers on the planet and Primus are unique.

There are talented bands in other genres. I do agree that they're not punk though but they're also not prog.

I said no, but I'll say yes as long as Styx is gone.
