IMHO, Carl is so much better technically than either Peart or Bruford... and see, favorite band and all aside, this is one area I know. I took percussion from 6th grade thru college.. I have a minor in college in music as a percussionist. And I love Bill Bruford... and even Peart.... but nothing any of them has ever done has made me go "How the hell did he do that???".... Carl made me do that all the time. Thats why I think he's a alien.... He's also the most hyperactive person I've ever known....

Looking like the Yes boys have taken the title, Rush could not be considered..
A) Because although lifeson/Lee are in the top bracket you would have to place Howe/Squire above them !!!
B) From what I've heard Dream Theatre could well be better musicians also !!!

Reed Lover:
You are right on the money when you state that most people will post their fav musicians and not, from an objective point of view, the most gifted technically. Just dropping my two cents, I'd have to disagree about Neil Peart. The best prog drummer on the list is IMHO William Bruford. Not because he played in two of the greatest prog bands ever in the height of their days but because technically, really no one compares. Peart has some real nice chops and a great feel, but Bruford is a time-god. He can play in all signatures, when the rest of the band is playing in whatever other signature with such subtleness it's just unbelievable. Best guitarist on the list is Fripp or Gilmour IMHO. But there are far superiour players, such as Holdsworth or Steve Morse. Best Bass player would be Levin or Squire. But here also, can greater Gods be named. Thinking about Dave Larue, or even a Billy Sheehan.

Not my favourite guitarist but probably the best in the world at what he does. To coin a phrase from another great band 'Very heavy, very humble'.
Just my opinion mind you.

The point I was making (supposedly at the expense of 3F8Ts) was that we are naturally going to say that our favourite band/musicians are the best.
As for which are the most technically gifted, that is difficult to quantify. Some bands:Rush, Yes, KC and ELP for starters, lend themselves toward more virtuosic playing because of their style.Bands like Genesis and Gentle Giant are more understated in their instrumentation. Quite often it is like comparing a Quarterback to a Running Back in NFL or Central Defender to a Striker in Football. And as ultimately fruitless.
So anyway, which pillock thinks their favourite drummer is better than Neil Peart?

first, i must say that my vote is for RUSH as to your comment on Lifeson, I don't think its that he's along for the ride so much in terms of riding on the skill of Lee and Peart, Lifeson is an outstanding guitarist in his own right and the band definitely wouldn't be the band it was/is without him... despite that, I do agree with you in the sense that he doesn't contribute to the band creatively speaking. I think he's just one of those guys who wants to bust out a mad solo... whether he had been playing in Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, or Rush... I mean, he stands out among his band members. While his band members write and read deep philosophy, peart in particular, he's getting arrested for assaulting a cop in florida while drunk.
btw, i got geddy lee's solo album in the mail finally today... i'll make a post in the CD section later once i get through it.
|
Lifeson writes most of the music.............................doesn't contribute creatively?????
Something seriously wrong amongst the Rush "fans" around here!!!!!!
|
really? i thought lee did...
|
Are you for real or just trying to yank my chain ?
Lifeson writes most of the music in collaboration with Lee!
How long did you say you's been a Rush fan?
|
Well I know they write the music together, I was just under the impression from what I've read in the past that Lee wrote most of the music as opposed to Lifeson...
I first discovered the band this summer. Now I own Fly By Night, Caress, 2112, Farewell, Hemispheres, Waves, Pictures, Signals, GUP, Hold Your Fire, and Counterparts

I first discovered Rush in Summer-the Summer of 1975.........

In the absence of Rush I voted Yes, but considered voting ELP.
Neither Yes or ELP are among my favourite bands, but there is no disputing the immense talent of Wakeman and Emmerson.

There are no stupid answers...only stupid people!
Everyone is entitled to an opinion.............but some people abuse that freedom.
Just shows you can listen to something without hearing!
Alex Lifeson is just along for the ride?????????????????????????
This place gets more and more surreal every day!
|
Couldn't agree more!! Alex Lifeson is a very skilled musician, as skilled as the other two at what he does. He gets overshadowed by the other two not because he is not as good, but because not many bass players and drummers are as obviously brilliant as Lee and Peart.

It's all about opinions but DallasBryan - Richard Wright ?? - Wakeman could outplay him with his feet !!!!
Wright is effective but nothing he does with Floyd puts him on a par with virtually any other prog keyboardist (except perhaps Kaye).....

I went with the mass and chose Yes. They're all fantastic musicians. ELP came a VERY close second!
In a way, I was almost tempted to choose Asia because Steve Howe was an amazing guitarist, Carl Palmer THE great drummer, Geoff Downes was a more than adequate keyboardist (but no Wakeman or Emerson) and John Wetton was a brilliant bassist/singer, and I am a great admirer of what he did with UK, Roxy Music and King Crimson.
I went for Yes however, because even though Asia had a ton of talent it was most definitely never realised in a Prog sense (but I do like them as a melodic rock band...NOT Prog!)

several of Rick Wakemans keyboards, synthesizers
and samplers were built and demostrated by Larry
Fast of Nektar. Why is he not included as part of
Peter Gabriels band?
