I agree with him. There comes a time when all bands should retire gracefully and ELP haven't reached that time (even though they may never play live together again anyway). All things considered, last night was a pretty damn fine performance.

Please don't defend them, and it wasn't meant as a flame by the way. But as stated previously, I have a long history with this band as do many others here. Time marches on. I was just thinking though, why isn't it acceptable for these 'ageing' prog masters to write great music and let the younger more limber musicians of today play the works. I mean isn't that what the classical masters did (of the ones that lived longer than 30 I mean)? ![]() |

Lake's voice has changed in tone and he doesn't have the range he did (which is normal for singers of his age) but I wouldn't say his voice was "weak" yesterday. Fair point about Emerson, he can't do the faster runs but he has had wrist/hand problems. I actually thought Palmer was pretty impressive yesterday. We have to realise that "Welcome Back My Friends..." is over 30 years ago now, we can't expect these bands to be the same nowadays.

^^^ Fair comments, from someone who knows ELP a whole lot better than I do.
To be fair, all the prog bands of old have had their glory days. They'll always have an audience of appreciators young and old, as this forum clearly shows, but it's down to te next generation to keep the flag flying. I've never been a huge ELP fan, but as I expected, they delievered the goods and knocked me out yesterday. I'm just glad I got to see them, before they turned it in for good. |

Well, as a long time ELP fan I must say...they really don't need to play live anymore. The arrangement shows how much each musician must now comprise in order to play their own tunes. Lakes voice is weak, Carl avoids the 'fills' that helped define not only his style but in some ways the genre itself, and Keith, well his runs aren't as fast or accurate s those of years past.
I'm sure all in all it must have been a great show all weekend anyway, and while I'd still like to hear some new original 'studio' material from them I can't see myself shelling out too much payola oif they were to tour in my area. Long Live ELP and RIP as well. |

Just noticed this on the website where you can order the CD of ELP's show -
"To all fans who purchased a copy of ELP's live set at High Voltage Festival, there is 2 minutes of audio drop out on track 2 of disc 1. This is because some stupid Roadie pulled out all of the recording leads by accident at the beginning of the set and we lost the feed!!"
Was it a roadie, or did Greg Lake stand on the cable and squash it? I was going to make a joke about him being craned onto the stage, but I won't. I was half expecting the crowd to start singin "Who ate all the pies" though.

Yeah, Steve didn't play for long enough, which is a real shame. He sounded fantastic, and the little section of Los Endos really made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I was pleasantly surprised by Uriah Heep too. I dont know anything about them, but I think I'll probably invest in the 'Demons & Wizards (?)' album. Alan, I cant describe the dissapointment as I heard ELP go into 'Fanfare..' as I had to leave the park. I thought they were superb. The sound was so clear, and they haven't lost their chops with age. I'd go and see them again like a shot. |

You forgot Steve Hackett - who was absolutely awesome but only played for half an hour. We couldn't understand why when most other bands got an hour.

Sorry Andy, I wasn't joking.
![]() Yep it was great day. Despite some moans about announcing the bill and the set times, it was well organised. No queues either to get in or for food/beer. The sound was excellent for all bands, the only real fault was that the Metal and Prog stages were too close together so the sound from the Metal stage could be heard during the quiet bits on the prog stage (e.g. Wishbone Ash's "Leaf and Stream") - it even affected Opeth during their quieter moments (they were awesome, btw). The other downer (apart from the Jaegermeister) was the

Just got back...
Chopper & I had a great day. We saw The Reasoning, Wishbone Ash, Uriah Heep, Opeth, Down, a bit of Clutch, and of course ELP who I thought were absolutely superb. I had to miss the end because of train catching issues.. ![]() ![]() Edited by Blacksword - July 25 2010 at 19:33 |
