In that time I've never even had to do a hardware reset on it, unlike my old 4th Gen iPlod which would freeze and jam with alarming (and disapointing) regularity.
They've changed from resistive touch screens to capacitive since I bought mine I believe, not that there was anything wrong with the old one. It works - navigation is okay, but scrolling through 500+ artists using any touch screen on any media player is a pain in the bum.
WiFi connection is good - when at home I have HD dock for it that connects it to the TV so I can record broadcast programmes onto it or play back vids from it on to a big screen, (I recorded the BBC4 prog-friendly programmes on to it) or I can just browse the interwebs and watch YouToob - that dock also allows me to stream stuff from any PC on the home network to the Archos and thus onto the TV, which is cool.
My only complaint about it is the version of Opera mine has is incompatible with PA so I cannot post to the forum using it.
As to the size of it - yeah it is a little bulky compared to any other portable media player - then it contains a 250Gb harddrive that (as I mentioned earlier) limits how small it can be and it has a 5" screen which makes watching video actually possible (on a smaller screen it isn't really worth the effort) - it's 120mm x 80mm x 15mm which makes it 20mm wider and 20mm longer than an iPlod classic and 50% heavier (240g vs 160g).
Anyway, for those few times when size and weight is a problem, I bought its 1" baby brother.

I don't see it as a matter of cool as much as utility. It's much easier for me to have all my music on one portable player as if I am out for the whole day, which I often am, my mood will often change unpredictably with regards to what music I want to listen and it is therefore more beneficial for me to have it all on me

Not sure if they will drop much, the latest ZuneHD's are flashdrive based and not HDD like original models. That and along with the Nvidia Tegra chip and OLED touchscreen keeps the cost up there, I have a ZuneHD 32GB and that's more than enough space......Every couple of months I will wipe the device clean and reload it from scratch. That forces me to relook at my collection regularly. They do make a ZuneHD 64GB...
Or you can get two iPod320Gb and duct tape them together.....

I'm fairly good about being able to manually change CDs while driving. My last truck's player had an auxiliary plug in, so I'd usually just shuffle on a playlist when I used that. I like the idea of a USB port though. Unfortunately that poses the problem of figuring out what the heck you want to listen to in advance which is why I came up with my randomizer method. |

^ that's the approach I use in the car - the headunit takes a standard USB pendrive - a 4Gb stick re-loaded with music every once in a while is far easier (and safer) than trying to navigate through 250G of files while driving.

I agree...I don't need too much music with me mobile, because when I'm out it's usually to do something - I just need an album or two for the bus there and back. I don't see the point of bringing your entire music collection with you, as cool as it is.

I have a 2 GB iPod and I hook it up to my laptop once or twice a week and add the 12 or 15 albums that I think that I will want to listen to during the week. Works like a charm.

Do you have any more info on the Archos, i.e. good touch screen, smooth playback, easy to navigate? Basically does it have any major issues, I have no real problems with the Archos range it's just that they do appear somewhat large from pictures. If they turn out to be a reliable piece of hardware then in the long run getting the 500gb or even 250gb model would make portable music storage a whole lot easier; I'm sure I've seen some pretty good prices for them around... |

Just be sure not to drop it in the toilet at the airport. My sister did that with a cell phone or something. May have been an ipod. ![]()

In the case of the Zune, nothing newer, better will be coming out. It would be nice if the price would drop to make them move affordable. |

Archos 5 looks like a nice little device and gives you 500 GB.

I basically have the same setup as Mike, except I'm using Subsonic instead of Audiogalaxy. I have a very small, low-power Lenovo nettop running as the music server at home - it's basically running a Linux shell (no X-windows or any graphical programs running), I ssh into it from my Linux desktop for adding files and maintenance.

If you're jonesing for a better player, it pays to hold out as long as you can because something better will likely come along for cheaper.

I have read some nasty reviews on the archos 5, which is a shame because it sure has potential.
what saddens me is that since most companies decided to go flash instead of harddrives, the capacities were reduced, bigest example: Zune, no more zune120 or upgrade, they replaced it with the zune touch, up to 32 (or 64?) GB.... I eager to see the day when flash drives reach 320 gb ![]() as for now, if you want high capacity and not to deal with build quality issues, i believe the ipod 160gb is the safest bet. as for me I have a zune120 and im not getting a higher capacity one anytime soon.
