I'm pretty sure the iPod 160GB, which I have, is as large as they come in terms of pure players, not Archos etc., but I figured a music appreciation site is as good a place to check as any.
Does anyone know if there are any bigger than the aforementioned iPod as mine is a couple GB off being full

Good question...I have wondered about this too.

I'm currently using Audiogalaxy.com on my Android phone ... it streams music from my home computer, so I essentially have a 500+ GB music player. It's a free service, the sound quality is quite good - the only drawback is of course that if you listen to music a lot on the phone, you'll need a plan that includes a few GBs of mobile data traffic per month.

There's nowt wrong with an Archos.
Once you have a 250Gb harddrive and a lithium battery to power it you are looking at something approaching the same size as a Archos 5 anyway.
In fact my Archos-5 is actually smaller than my WD-250Gb Passport external harddrive.

Not the same as a portable player as such but I have a 1tb Verbatim bus-powered drive full of lossless music which I plug directly into my Oppo BluRay player and then play through my surround system. The Oppo is truly a thing of wonder. It plays flacs, DVD-A, SACD, MKV, Avi etc. In fact the only thing it won't play at the moment because of European licensing issues is MP3(!).

Well, my computer is always on for other reasons, so I guess that puts me in a different position. I also think that it's simply extremely convenient when you really only need one gadget to carry around all the time.
But what I could do is to get an old used netbook and use that as the always on computer at home ... it would consume much less power.

I feel your pain. My last two players got all full on me. I decided to rip at a lower bit rate and use the wma format which supposedly will make a 64 bit that sounds as good as 128 mp3. Then for the best quality listening experience I just play the originals on the home stereo.

^ Maybe. But I like the hazzle-free approach of AudioGalaxy. I have a big collection of files, all nicely tagged and with the correct album art. Even if there were affordable net drive services for 100+ GB of data, I wouldn't want to maintain such a collection in addition to the local collection. Maybe with some sort of automatic synchronization (like rsync), but I'm not aware of such a solution (remember, "affordable").
BTW: Another advantage of AudioGalaxy (and similar solutions) is that they automatically encode the audio for mobile bandwidth - and it sounds quite good. You can even have a multi terabyte collection of lossless audio, and it would still all be available on the smartphone.

I have read some nasty reviews on the archos 5, which is a shame because it sure has potential.
what saddens me is that since most companies decided to go flash instead of harddrives, the capacities were reduced, bigest example: Zune, no more zune120 or upgrade, they replaced it with the zune touch, up to 32 (or 64?) GB....
I eager to see the day when flash drives reach 320 gb
as for now, if you want high capacity and not to deal with build quality issues, i believe the ipod 160gb is the safest bet.
as for me I have a zune120 and im not getting a higher capacity one anytime soon.

I basically have the same setup as Mike, except I'm using Subsonic instead of Audiogalaxy. I have a very small, low-power Lenovo nettop running as the music server at home - it's basically running a Linux shell (no X-windows or any graphical programs running), I ssh into it from my Linux desktop for adding files and maintenance.

| I've never had an ipod, my current player is a Zune and I'm happy with it (80g). I don't think you'd want a player to be much smaller, but storage capacity will continue to rise. I've said this before, but if size is reduced further then we'll probably need some form of holographic projector for the album art and video.

My wife would say "get a CD changer" then I'd say "shut up beeotch" then she'd tear my nuts off.
I'm fairly good about being able to manually change CDs while driving. My last truck's player had an auxiliary plug in, so I'd usually just shuffle on a playlist when I used that.
I like the idea of a USB port though. Unfortunately that poses the problem of figuring out what the heck you want to listen to in advance which is why I came up with my randomizer method.

Not sure if they will drop much, the latest ZuneHD's are flashdrive based and not HDD like original models. That and along with the Nvidia Tegra chip and OLED touchscreen keeps the cost up there, I have a ZuneHD 32GB and that's more than enough space......Every couple of months I will wipe the device clean and reload it from scratch. That forces me to relook at my collection regularly. They do make a ZuneHD 64GB...
Or you can get two iPod320Gb and duct tape them together.....

I don't see it as a matter of cool as much as utility. It's much easier for me to have all my music on one portable player as if I am out for the whole day, which I often am, my mood will often change unpredictably with regards to what music I want to listen and it is therefore more beneficial for me to have it all on me

Mine is two years old and had no problems with it.
In that time I've never even had to do a hardware reset on it, unlike my old 4th Gen iPlod which would freeze and jam with alarming (and disapointing) regularity.
They've changed from resistive touch screens to capacitive since I bought mine I believe, not that there was anything wrong with the old one. It works - navigation is okay, but scrolling through 500+ artists using any touch screen on any media player is a pain in the bum.
WiFi connection is good - when at home I have HD dock for it that connects it to the TV so I can record broadcast programmes onto it or play back vids from it on to a big screen, (I recorded the BBC4 prog-friendly programmes on to it) or I can just browse the interwebs and watch YouToob - that dock also allows me to stream stuff from any PC on the home network to the Archos and thus onto the TV, which is cool.
My only complaint about it is the version of Opera mine has is incompatible with PA so I cannot post to the forum using it.
As to the size of it - yeah it is a little bulky compared to any other portable media player - then it contains a 250Gb harddrive that (as I mentioned earlier) limits how small it can be and it has a 5" screen which makes watching video actually possible (on a smaller screen it isn't really worth the effort) - it's 120mm x 80mm x 15mm which makes it 20mm wider and 20mm longer than an iPlod classic and 50% heavier (240g vs 160g).
Anyway, for those few times when size and weight is a problem, I bought its http://www.amazon.co.uk/ARCHOS-Vision-8GB-MP3-Player/dp/B003H74WKM/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1301357119&sr=1-1" rel="nofollow - 1" baby brother .

What??? As far as I know "streaming" is included in copyright jurisdiction as a public broadcast, and listening to your MP3s that only you have access over the internet is hardly a public broadcast.

For those using streaming...is your phone reliable for that? For instance, on my phone when using last.fm, I'm fine in wifi but on 3G there are often enough delays to make it unusable.

Depends on how good my 3G connection is, but I usually have no issues. Subsonic basically downloads all the songs in your queue to your phone while streaming, so once the downloads are complete you're basically not streaming anymore. I do sometimes like to have the first song buffered before playing so I don't have to deal with a data starvation scenario.
Alternatively, if I'm headed out I'll quickly download an album over my home wifi as I'm out the door.
The other nice thing is you can set a reasonably large cache size (I have mine set to 10 GB) so your downloaded albums are stored - when you want to listen to something again, it's there, no streaming needed.
I also should mention there's a web interface for Subsonic such that I can access the server from my laptop at the office, and listen to all my music that way. My wife does the same at her job.

Once you have a 250Gb harddrive and a lithium battery to power it you are looking at something approaching the same size as a Archos 5 anyway.
In fact my Archos-5 is actually smaller than my WD-250Gb Passport external harddrive. |
Thanks to your suggestion I’ve just brought an Archos 70 250gb and It’s perfect. Finally I have a device where I can fit all my music in it. I hate deleting albums from my iPod; it really has become a survival of the fittest with it. I’m living proof of natural selection!
