Ian Anderson for me - although Burton Cummings plays a mean flute as well and not nearly enough for my taste. Not exactly "Prog" though ...

I voted Ian Anderson, for his performance with the instrument as well as his playing, but I really rate Adrian Terrazas Gonzalez as a musician, love his playing on the Volta albums.

A conspicuous one missing from this list is Didier Malherbe.

Yes, strange list. No.1 is Miles Davis, and there are many others after him.
Somewhere after all of them could be Ian Anderson's place.... |
As a trumpeter myself (though I've hardly played since the days of youth orchestra so take calling myself a trumpeter with a pinch of salt), I actually prefer Eddie Henderson's trumpet playing. Course I love Miles Davis. Donald Byrd is another good one (and I certainly his Electric Byrd to be a progressive jazz-rock album -- it was influenced by Bitches Brew). Re Herbie Mann which I mentioned earlier, and was mentioned again in another post, for the purposes of PA which is a large Prog umbrella site, I consider his Stone Flute to be PA suitable.

It's the list of musicians that played in progbands,
No doubt that Davis is no.1 as well as Coltrane and Rampal

Of this list, Jimmy Hastings closely followed by Andy Latimer.
Now, I'm a big Camel / Caravan / Canterbury fan. I love that dreamy flute style.

Dave Jackson without any doubt. He made me love the sax, which was a daunting task (which was a daunting task) and he is also delicate in his flute playing.
Anderson came to flute almost by accident and Peter stopped playing flute after his debut solo album in 77. But they are the two most famous names inthe list.

Ian hands down. But I'd also like to mention Paul Minns (oboe and recorder) from Third Ear Band and James Harpham (recorder) from The Wooden O among my personal favourites.

I don't know why I've forgotten about Mel Collins (big fault)
As to Dick Heckstall-Smith he is rather a jazz performer and if I mentioned him I should mention also Miles Davis , John Coltrane, Herbie Mann etc etc etc .

Latimer, then Hastings and Anderson. Mel Collins is missing.

I wonder if the rest of PA members are tired of me and you putting Toby's name in every thread they can think of. But can they blame us? He needs to be mentioned... Edit: ...on every thread they can think of!

On the list of the ones I know, David Jackson. Lindsay Cooper would have been a very good addition to this list, I think, and would have got my vote (amongst others), plus, I'm sure, a few other people's votes. Michel Berckmans is another one I'd like to mention. I also want to mention the flautists Herbie Mann and Bjorn J:Son Lindh for those unfamiliar with their work.

I was thinking of choosing Gabriel, but then I decided on Ian Anderson. Ian Anderson is just incredible. Peter Gabriel is also fantastic and has had great moments, but I find myself enjoying Ian Anderson more when it comes to the two playing wind instruments.
