Anderson and Gabriel are the two best lyricists/writers so it boils down to their wind instrument playing.
Ian it is.

Peter Gabriel probably isn't the best AT playing wind instruments, but he is my favorite musician who HAPPENS to play wind instruments.

Ian Anderson without a doubt.

I was thinking of choosing Gabriel, but then I decided on Ian Anderson. Ian Anderson is just incredible. Peter Gabriel is also fantastic and has had great moments, but I find myself enjoying Ian Anderson more when it comes to the two playing wind instruments.

On the list of the ones I know, David Jackson.  Lindsay Cooper would have been a very good addition to this list, I think, and would have got my vote (amongst others), plus, I'm sure, a few other people's votes. Michel Berckmans is another one I'd like to mention. I also want to mention the flautists Herbie Mann and Bjorn J:Son Lindh for those unfamiliar with their work.

As Dick Heckstall-Smith, Mel Collins and John Helliwell are not on the list I go for Ian McDonald.

Posted By: Varon
Date Posted: September 19 2010 at 05:26
I don't know why I've forgotten about Mel Collins (big fault)
As to Dick Heckstall-Smith he is rather a jazz performer and if I mentioned him I should mention also Miles Davis , John Coltrane, Herbie Mann etc etc etc .

Ian hands down.
But I'd also like to mention Paul Minns (oboe and recorder) from Third Ear Band and James Harpham (recorder) from The Wooden O among my personal favourites.

Dave Jackson without any doubt. He made me love the sax, which was a daunting task (which was a daunting task) and he is also delicate in his flute playing.

Anderson came to flute almost by accident and Peter stopped playing flute after his debut solo album in 77. But they are the two most famous names inthe list.

Of this list, Jimmy Hastings closely followed by Andy Latimer.

Now, I'm a big Camel / Caravan / Canterbury fan. I love that dreamy flute style.

Yes, strange list. No.1 is Miles Davis, and there are many others after him.

Somewhere after all of them could be Ian Anderson's place....

It's the list of musicians that played in progbands,
No doubt that Davis is no.1 as well as Coltrane and Rampal

As a trumpeter myself (though I've hardly played since the days of youth orchestra so take calling myself a trumpeter with a pinch of salt), I actually prefer Eddie Henderson's trumpet playing.  Course I love Miles Davis.  Donald Byrd is another good one (and I certainly his Electric Byrd to be a progressive jazz-rock album -- it was influenced by Bitches Brew).

Re Herbie Mann  which I mentioned earlier, and was mentioned again in another post, for the purposes of PA which is a large Prog umbrella site, I consider his Stone Flute to be PA suitable.

Peter Gabriel is my favourite musician and Ian Anderson is the best rock flutist, so...Ian it is

A conspicuous one missing from this list is Didier Malherbe.

I voted Ian Anderson, for his performance with the instrument as well as his playing, but I really rate Adrian Terrazas Gonzalez as a musician, love his playing on the Volta albums.

Ian Anderson for me - although Burton Cummings plays a mean flute as well and not nearly enough for my taste.  Not exactly "Prog" though ...

Flute, all over Genesis. Just listen to that flute solo at the end of Selling England (the song) and let the soothing melody sway your vote.

If the question would had been about the best wind instrument performer in Prog, would probably had voted for for Thijs Van Leer.

But Peter Gabriel is my favourite artist of the list (Mainly ecause his vocals, composition) who also plays a wind instrument.

Iván

Bloomdidoo! his playing on Mother Gong's "Fairy Tales" alone is out of this world. and he definitely is the one who plays the biggest variety of wind instruments. in this video he plays a doudouk (also spelled duduk), an Armenian flute::

multi--instrumentalist Roland Schaeffer is also missing on the list; he plays saxes, nagaswaram, guitar and acoustic bass, and amazingly all equally well. here a video with Roland Schaefferf:

I would also like to mention Robert Calvert of Catapilla and Mother Gong (not to be confused with the Hawkwind singer of the same name). here a videoi of him:

also Theo Travis of Gong:

I voted for Jimmy Hastings, his solos are so tasteful that leave me breathless.
Anyway, no one can deny that Ian Anderson IS the flute player in rock, although Thijs Van Leer is better in technique and even in feeling.
I'd also love to remember the Gryphon's couple of Richard Harvey (recorders, crumhorns, clarinet) and Brian Gulland (bassoon, crumhorns, recorders), two guys I had the chance to meet personally some time ago.

First of all, it's outrageous that Mel Collins was excluded from this poll. Outrageous! With that said, it's got to be Jimmy Hastings for his work on Caravan and Squire's Fish Out of Water. F'ing awesome. And be more careful next time.

David Gilmour plays sax (On an Island and Live in Gdansk)
Rick Wright played trombone (Jugband Blues).

Two great missings from the list.

Everyone and more (Ian Underwood?) is fine but Ian Anderson is the only one who got to be great  and then actually improved (learned how to play it properly) around Roots To Branches and onward.

Now the funniest "wind" solo - I sincerely hope this is apochryphal but it could be true -  is a piece on a Warren Zevon album, not strictly an instrument really....but ... wind... In the form of a flatus which was recorded, synthesized and used as a solo.

Transcribe that!LOL

Ian McDonald is wonderful. A clear winner. If you haven't listed to it, try Mcdonald and Giles album. Wonderful KC spin off!
