Personally I never considered INTKOTKC to be a masterpiece... It's a very good album but it's NOT where it all started in prog and it's not the best KC album at all.
I would go with Hyrbis - I was totally amazed by this debut... released in 92 it had THAT KIND OF SOUND from 70s and perfect compositions - almost flawless.

In the Court of the Crimson King
My favorite KC album, and one of my all time faves.

Crimson king was the first prog album to really bring prog rock to the
forefront of the music scene and it set the stage for 70s prog rock
one of the most influential prog albums of all time

Not long ago I would have voted for ITCOTCK, but today no way, my vote goes to:
HYBRIS
The perfect debut.

I went with King Crimson too. It was a close thing for Marillion, but I decided that their debut 12" was slightly better than their debut album.

My vote would go to Van Der Graaf Generator "The Least we can do is wave
to each other." That's their first album.

King Crimson, Marillion, Anglagard and ELP are the only ones on there whose debuts were considered amound their best work. And In the Court of The Crimson King is the best of those 3 in my opinion.

Court of the Crimson King took everybody by surprise because it was so good, so different and from some guys no one had ever heard of. And just as FM radio was getting a foothold in the public ear.
