A toss between Gentle Giant and Hybris for me. I remember I'd avoided the former for some time because I'd heard that it was weak in comparison to their other releases, but even on their debut Gentle Giant were still proggier than the average prog band!

And as for Hybris... there can be no doubting the strength of that album! It's a mind-blower and no mistake!

I think it's KC ITCOTCK, but Pink Floyd's "Piper" is a close second, imo.

Riverside-Out Of Myself. A devastatingly good debut that is as good as most of the above.

Though not in the same class as "Script" it is better than either the debut Yes or Genesis offerings although in no sense pioneering.I have big hopes for this lot..Big smile

Script for A Jester's tear. It had a mature sound, and as an immediate classic, same goes for ITCOTCK, where most debut albums are not the best work from the given artist those two are.

Marillion because it's the the one that sounds least (of the ones I've heard) like they're "finding their feet" apart from ELP, and for some reason I haven't been in much of an ELP mood these past few days..! . However from a historical point of view, KC, GG, VdGG, PF (what a lot of acronyms), Yes and Genesis have all gone on to create albums which build on their debuts and create which I find truly stunning (while I love Marillion, apart from the first few times I've heard them they never "blow me away" in quite the same way as the aforementioned) . If I had the choice of any (prog) debut, it'd probably be the Soft Machine's though.

I'm gonna go for Sock's Bread.

Besides the fact that the misspelling made me laugh (I'm a simpleton, I know), I think "The Light" is an amazing debut album, sounding like a fully-realized band at their peak. I don't think SB ever did any better.

KC's debut is classic, but since it's not among my favorite KC albums I can't honestly vote for it. But it was outstandingly original, and arguably started prog.

ELP's debut is still my favorite album by the band, but again- it's not without flaws, and doesn't really represent the 'sound' of ELP as well as other released. The same goes for Freak Out and Piper: great albums and impressive debuts but not really what the respective bands were all about, or came to be about.

Script, ITCOTCK, Piper

I don't care how inconsistent Piper is - it has a unique charm and is madly experimental. It encapsultes not only an era, but also means of self-expression through music that are many-fold and more complex than a casual listen would suggest.

ITCOTCK - speaks for itself, really. Groundbreaking, a landmark - arguably the first prog rock album proper, superlative execution of carefully thought-out and composed music, and varied in style. The only drawback is the production - although even that can be argued to have a nostalgic charm. Like Piper, it does suffer a little from inconsistency.

Script just has it all (apart from the drums, maybe - but nothing's perfect). Driven by Fish's inspirational lyrics and strong melodies, close attention to drama, both lyrically and musically, Script is more convincingly in the progressive rock domain than Piper or ITCOTCK. It both shows and explores possibilites in rock song writing, rather than getting distracted by wierd sojurns into other genres or feeling the need to impress the audience with OTT virtuosity. A clear example of where the music is everything and the show is simply something to highlight the expression of the music rather than the other way around. There are simply no consistency issues with Script - it is a near-perfect unfolding of musical ideas supporting the lyrical events in the life of an archetype.

Freak Out is one of the most remarkable debuts of the last 50 years, though it's not really prog. Gentle Giant's debut was also splendid, though there was much better to come.

Am I the only person who thinks that ITCOTCK is overrated and sounds very dated? I like it, but it's not a patch on what was to come.

I don't know many of these, but I think Piper is way overrated.

At this time, my favorite debut album is Symphony X...by Symphony X. Yes, the production is bad. Yes, the lead vocalist they had then sounds like a girl. Yet musically, they are much closer to fully-realized than a lot of bands are at that point. I think of that album as a diamond in the rough.

I went with Piper At The Gates Of Dawn since it was the only one on the list I know well, other than Yes (meh) and In The Court...(I am a much bigger fan of the MKII lineup).

Interestingly, my favorite debut album of all time is by King's X (not really prog, more psychedelic groove-metal with Beatles vocals), Out Of The Silent Planet. They are probably my third favorite band of all time after Rush & Floyd.

ELP wins hands down.

It has the best opening track of all time. It wins just because of that. The Three Fates is a stunning piece of music and Take a Pebble is the perfect song.

Asia's debut is pretty good too.

Maybe you hate it because you like Piper. And seriously, the album really is not what it's cracked up to be by so many. It's treated like a masterpiece by so many when in fact it's just 60s Britpop in most places. I mean, sorry, but drugs do not a genius make.

Maybe you hate it because you like Piper.

No - I hate the term when applied to anything that is popular for very good reasons.

So you don't like it then?

And seriously, the album really is not what it's cracked up to be by so many.

You may be right - it's actually a lot better than many people think.

It's treated like a masterpiece by so many when in fact it's just 60s Britpop in most places.

*sigh* No - it isn't 60s Britpop in any place.

And it IS a masterpiece in many ways.

I mean, sorry, but drugs do not a genius make.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but a large number of artistic people have found that drugs assist in the creative process, including Beethoven. Who WAS a genius.

Posted By: FloydWright
Date Posted: March 21 2005 at 16:10
But if somebody feels that it is popular for little to no reason, then it ought to make sense that they are using that word. And no, I don't like it--I think it's shoddily produced. The experimentation sometimes goes to where it's incoherent (the drugs, likely), and the other songs are just so syrupy-poppy that it's riduculous, and really distasteful.

Because of all of this, it really isn't a masterpiece. Plus, if you brush up on your Pink Floyd history, that band was trying to get radio success. They were definitely trying to be poppy.

As for the issue with drugs, they will only hinder what abilities a person has. While there may be more spontaneous expression at times, that is nothing compared to what is planned and thought out by a lucid mind. And where did you get your information about Beethoven and drugs? If he really did, then it becomes even more of a wonder that he composed what he did, because undoubtedly his work would've been even more impressive without it. One should not require some kind of chemical crutch in order to think and create; something is really wrong with that kind of logic.

I like the production...

The experimentation sometimes goes to where it's incoherent (the drugs, likely),

There's a naive sort of cohesiveness that I really like - obviously Syd's enthusiasm for (particularly) LSD has a large part to play...

and the other songs are just so syrupy-poppy that it's riduculous, and really distasteful.

That's your opinion - I don't hear anything syrupy or poppy - it all sounds very experimental and exciting, but presenting itself as a form of psychedelic rock/pop music - which is down to the intelligent and sensitive production.

Because of all of this, it really isn't a masterpiece.

In your opinion.

Plus, if you brush up on your Pink Floyd history, that band was trying to get radio success. They were definitely trying to be poppy.

Like most bands don't want their music to be popular - God forbid anyone should actually like it.

Don't confuse the term Pop music with Popular. If you brush up on your Floyd history you'll find out that Floyd were much more into the live thing and creating something special in the live environment. The entire band was focussed on creating, experimenting and pushing possibilities - especially Syd.

As for the issue with drugs, they will only hinder what abilities a person has.

That is not necessarily true - if I have a cup of coffee (caffiene), it won't hinder my abilities. Likewise, if I smoke a spliff during a jam session, it won't necessarily hinder my abilities - in fact, like so many other musicians, I have found that it can enhance the creative process. Many other musicians have taken drugs (excuse me for stating the obvious), and produced fantastic music.

While there may be more spontaneous expression at times, that is nothing compared to what is planned and thought out by a lucid mind.

The best way to produce music is a combination of both, in my experience, and few people take drugs 24/7.

And where did you get your information about Beethoven and drugs?

He drank alcohol, although not as much as his father. It's in any decent biography. Tchaikovsky suffered more from the demon drink, and Berlioz liked opium... the list goes on.

If he really did, then it becomes even more of a wonder that he composed what he did, because undoubtedly his work would've been even more impressive without it.

I doubt it very much. You're saying that Hendrix or Miles Davis would also have produced better music without drugs? That's patently not true - although Hendrix would have produced MORE great music, of course. The music of Hawkwind is psychedelic enough to get stoned from just by listening to it - and I doubt they'd have written better music without the drugs.

One should not require some kind of chemical crutch in order to think and create; something is really wrong with that kind of logic.

True - but that's a different discussion entirely to the discussion whether or not drugs can enhance or detract from the creative experience - I believe (from experience) that both are true.

The point is not to use drugs as a crutch, but as an optional tool. They're not a requirement - but if you find that they are helpful to the creative process and find new ideas and inspiration through their use, then where's the problem?

It's careless, habitual, recreational abuse that's bad, not mindful, constructive use. The human body is one big chemical reaction, balancing many different chemicals right around the clock. Even simple things like eating can affect the whole balance - and who wants a carefully moderated balanced life anyway? You only get the one, and it's too short

I agree with FW -- I always thought Piper at the Gates of Dawn got a lot more praise than it deserves. I think a few songs are absolutely brilliant (namely: "Astronomy Domine", "Matilda Mother", "Interstellar Overdrive", "Chapter 24") and a couple songs are always very good if not innovative ("Lucifer Sam" and "Bike"), but a lot of them are incredibly cheesy and too incoherent to get any real meaning out of them.

Of those listed, Marillion's excellent Script for a Jester's Tear - by a mile. Most of the rest are very ordinary or really poor (I haven't heard Anglagard's Hybris)

I voted for Script, there are such great songs on it. Each song is classic in my book.

ELP, even though I don't think it counts because all three of them had already made debut albums with other groups.

'Gentle Giant'. They have so few votes, as well as Frank Zappa's 'Freak Out!', yet they are two groundbreaking albums.

Court of the Crimson King took everybody by surprise because it was so good, so different and from some guys no one had ever heard of.  And just as FM radio was getting a foothold in the public ear.

King Crimson, Marillion, Anglagard and ELP are the only ones on there whose debuts were considered amound their best work. And In the Court of The Crimson King is the best of those 3 in my opinion.
