No !!! Great band, some tracks that might lay claim to being proggy, but NO!!!!

As others have said, "prog" and "great" music are not necessarily one and the same. Just because they're great doesn't merit inclusion. Yes, I am fussed about it. They're basically a blues band with some rocky licks.

As much as I love Led Zep, I don't think they're prog enough to be included here. However there is (at least) one prog site that has included them - http://www.progressiveears.com/default.asp?bhcp=1

Why would they be included? They are one of the greatest rock bands but they are in noe way prog.

Maybe if we capped the number of bands who could be allowed in........then for every band we wanted to include, as long as we could agree on an ejection..........although that does sound like the first step on the way to "Prog Brother".........Wink

My sentiments exactly.  I've always felt "prog-related" could get out of hand very quickly.

I think this site could use a big disclaimer of some sort: "PROG is not a badge of honor, it's a method of describing/classifying music.  There are many outstanding bands who are not classified as prog; this does not detract from them in any way."

No offense to whoever this was, but someone posted a few days ago "Boston is my favorite band - why aren't they listed here?"  See what I mean?  It's like this place is a musical country club - "what, you're saying my favorite band isn't good enough to get in?"  Need to find a way to quell this sentiment.

No!

Led Zeppelin is a great band, but not prog. As I've heard some other member(s) echo, this is PROG archives, not GOOD MUSIC archives. All prog is good music (except neo Wink), but not all good music is prog.

Not prog, but prog related for sure. If Queen's here, so should Zep be. Look at the description of the prog related category and you'll see. Wink

Well, the Beatles, some death metal and even Fairport Convention are here....Confused

What the hey -- just bring in ALL the 70s & 80s bands we like. (Prog is a meaningless term now, in any case.)Stern Smile

Some of their songs are very proggy (Achilles Last Stand, No Quarter, Kashmir...) but most of their music is not even prog-related. I don't mind if they're included, but I don't think they should be.

My thoughts exactly (though I voted for yes). They're much too influential to be left out. Perhaps we should consider a separate section for those classic late '60s bands like Zep, Cream and The Who that had some influence on the development of prog, at least as far as some seminal bands are concerned.

I'm on the fence here. Were I to argue for Led Zep's prog-... uh, prog-ness (?) I would use totally different songs. In the Light and No Quarter are, in my opinion, definitely prog songs. Maybe even some more songs like Kashmir, Stairway, or Carouselambra qualify. (I promise I'm not just picking their longest songs, it's a sheer coincidence Tongue).

As much as I love all those songs, and almost everything Zep did, I just can't see them as a real prog band in the same way as Genesis or even Deep Purple is. Prog-related, though? I don't see why not. It becomes increasingly difficult as Zep's career goes on to find bands, including prog bands, that didn't include some aspect of Zep in their own work. For example, Tool has been known to do a fairly sizeable number of Zep covers at their shows (They even did a studio version of No Quarter... which I don't recommend.)  Zeppelin's influence alone is enough to include them to an extent.

Maybe if only IV and after were included... I through III were worthless in terms of prog.
Proggin' it up eight days a week...

One of my favourite bands, but they just really aren't prog. Well some songs (No Quarter, Achilles Last Stand, Stairway to Heaven, etc.) are sorta prog-ish, but not really that much. Slightly prog-related at most.
