Oh well... I never found a true prog band which I didn't like. But there are two "almost-prog" bands here at this site which I tried so hard to like (I even did listen to all their albums) and simply didn't like at all: Queen and Supertramp. Although I respect their work, their talents and musicianship, I simply cannot understand how they appeal for so many people when I cannot stand to listen a full Queen/Supertramp album from the beggining to the end. Maybe they have some hidden charm which I simply cannot get, maybe they are simply overrated by their fans. The simple fact is: I just don't like it.

But there always is a hope: I thought exactly the same way about Roxy Music and Univers Zero 15 years ago, and now I like both bands. So I think that I someday will try Queen and Supertramp again...

It's a reasonable album but hardly mindlowing. Ange are hardly the most essential of groups. Here's a few I feel I ought to love but just can't:

  • Genesis
  • Pink Floyd
  • Art Bears
A bit of a shame mayhaps, but life goes on, eh?

now that's a real surprise, Trousie. of Genesis I knew, and Pink Floyd I can understand, given your taste, but the Art Bears???? they should be exactly your cup of tea.
did you try "Winter Lights"?

I know, hence inclusion on this thread. I REALLY REALLY REALLY should love them, but after 3 or so listens to Hopes and Fears I was just left cold. Don't ask me why 'cause I don't understand it myself.

I've tried Yes, ELP, and Genesis at various stages, but they just all mostly bore the crap outta me. Yes has the best chance of becoming a band i like after listening to Close To The Edge, but even that wasn't that fantastic. It was really nice, but not much else. I'm more into the experimental side of prog rock. Please excuse any ignorance i have shown in this post

It certainly confuses when people start comparing Rudess to the Emerson's and Wakeman's of this world cos' there is simply no comparison. As for Dream Theater, I don't mind them and like lots of thier material. 'Octavarian' is an awesome song but the rest of the CD is just ideas pinched from other bands....plaigarism!!!!

my opinion, keep in mind.

In a thread called " I just don't Like it", you name a band you do like?

The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin.

The Rolling Stones covered 'You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover' and I like Manfred Mann, Hawkwind etc versions of their songs, but I just don't like listening to Jagger et al at all.

I find Robert Plant's voice far too mannered and the arrangement/production too cluttered.

Which ProgMetal did you listen to?

Well, basically Dream Theater, Queensryche, Opeth, Tool and Ayreon and none of them are my cup of tea.

I especially don't understand how you can like Henry Cow and dislike the Art Bears; in my opinion they are one and the same (with the same musicans even), and the name change was not really necessary
did you try "Winter Lights"?

That means nothing. There are a lot people who love them.  What is your point?

The point is that most people have taste!

Love Rush though... Sometimes I think these two groups are mutually exclusive.

You want to know which bands are also mutually exclusive?

Genesis and Shakatak

Not that I know much about it, but the metal or prog-metal or whatever-metal genre(s) is one I love to hate. . Reminds me of a bunch of snot-nosed adolescents trying to look and sound scary. Sorry for those who like that genre, but I cannot take that seriously. As a joke, it's definitely hilarious!!  But that they should take themselves seriously is laughable.

1 stars  —   Undoubtedly the biggest waste of my Prog thirsty ears. I'm an ardent fan of Fragile and Close to the Edge. This album is nothing like the others. I've tried to tackle listening to this album a dozen times and I can't get myself to enjoy it. Maybe I'm just a 'casual' prog fan and "Relayer" is just out of my league. Any way I stack it I can't help but feel that this record is absolute garbage. "Relayer," more like "Recycle."

I have read this review and it is funny to notice that someone can love Close to the edge and not love Relayer. When I heard this album the first time I was completely blown away by Sound chaser (9/10).

Now that I have heard the album more often I am completely blown away by The gates of Delirium (10/10). But I have to say I had my doubts at first listen. When I listened to it more often, I came to the conclusion that the most astonishing part of the song is at 10:00-10:20 (it's almost the same as 9:20-9:40 but even better). That's the kind of sophistication I absolutely love and it is one you might overhear when you hear it for the first time. It's the same feeling I get when I listen to some songs of Gentle Giant (Give it back, Experience). There is only one part in The gates of Delirium where I think they kind of screw it up (12:27-12:48) but don't let this discourage you not to listen to this album again or to rate it with only one star.

I still have to dig To be over. I have to listen to it more often to make a good judgement about this song. I also have some trouble to dig The turn of the century from Yes' album Going for the one. But I love the Soon part from The gates of Delirium.
