Topic: Most ridiculously over the top drummer ev Posted: June 14 2007 at 12:52 |
^^^ Are there any streamable songs here in PA or even myspace where I can listen to Mr. Donati? I've heard his name several times before like in Planet X, but haven't heard it yet.

Here are some good easier to digest tracks that may set you on your way to possibly LOVE hella.
1-800 Ghost Dance
Republic of Rough and Ready
Try Dis...
Song From Uncle
The Devil Isn't Red
The D. Elkan
aside from that most everything is crazy amazing-ness
I really miss the two piece |
Having heard one album from both incarnations of the band I don't think it looks that bad. It sure is a bit more restrained, but the new album is quite good.
Either way they're awesome.
|
Yeah they are
but I really loved the unrestrained aspect. I just hope it doesnt start to sound more like other Zach Hill projects like Holy Smokes, The Ladies, etc, etc. (even though these are very good, old two piece Hella holds the title of my favorite. Maybe their later efforts will change my mind...and I hope so) |
I see what you mean there. The Ladies sometimes sounds like one of those "indie" bands (albeit a really comlpex one). I surely wouldn't like Hella to take that direction either. Speaking of Zach Hill, I was scared when I listened to Crime in Choir! I've never thought to hear Zach Hill play in such a normal way! I missed his personality (and playing) in that band.

Christian Vander played over (Janik) Top for a large fraction of his career with Magma.

He's the drummer for Hella, and he's amazing.
In a good way, I would say he is more over the top than nearly any other drummer.

Ah man I love Minnemann! I mean he can be a bit too much, but he's a crazy lunatic in a good way of course.

For those of you who didn't say useless things concerning Portnoy, which has nothing to do with the topic by the way, thanks for your responses!

Who is the most ridiculous, extravagent, "pretentious" over the top drummer ever?
Portnoy doesn't know when to shut up. He has very little reserve. His overplaying can be ridiculous.

One of my favorites as well. Mastodon seem to use drums as both a rhythm and a lead instrument. I enjoy it. A lot.

Uh, his name is Animal? Guys, if we're going to discuss serious musicians, let's use the proper handles, shall we?

^^^^ I agree about Brann Dailor. Another ridiculously busy drummer is
Furio Chirico of "Arti e Mestieri" and "the Trip" (among others).
