Who is the most ridiculous, extravagent, "pretentious" over the top drummer ever?

(Not necessarily best, though possibly)

Obviously Portnoy. I think he needed to cut back on the new album and he did, but I'd like it if he revamped his style or drum sound a bit.

If you mean it in a good way then Zach Hill. He's a madman!

in his time it probably would've been Moon.. for today, Virgil Donati would be a good candidate

Portnoy plays drums annoyingly.

For pretentiousness, gotta go with Narada Michael Walden, followed by his predecessor with Mahavishnu, Billy Cobham. For over-the-topitude, I nominate Mothers-era Terry Bozzio -- the sum'bitch just never lets up!

You know, I love Mike's drumming, but I would like to see him experiment a bit more, try something new, take a risk...

I'd consider Brann Dailor of Mastodon to be a little "ridiculous" and "over the top", but I like it. He's one of my favorite drummers.

^^^^ I agree about Brann Dailor. Another ridiculously busy drummer is Furio Chirico of "Arti e Mestieri" and "the Trip" (among others).

Anybody heard Marco Minnemann play? I think he fits the ridiculously over the top description.

Uh, his name is Animal? Guys, if we're going to discuss serious musicians, let's use the proper handles, shall we?

One of my favorites as well. Mastodon seem to use drums as both a rhythm and a lead instrument. I enjoy it. A lot.

Portnoy doesn't know when to shut up. He has very little reserve. His overplaying can be ridiculous.

ediited for KoolAid

For those of you who didn't say useless things concerning Portnoy, which has nothing to do with the topic by the way, thanks for your responses!

I'm going to check out the guys mentioned here that I really don't know much about, such as "Zach Hill." I don't even remember where I know that name from.

Ah man I love Minnemann! I mean he can be a bit too much, but he's a crazy lunatic in a good way of course.

He's the drummer for Hella, and he's amazing.

In a good way, I would say he is more over the top than nearly any other drummer.

Oh I've heard Hella before! I didn't like the actual music too much the first time around but I'm willing to take a closer listen. And yes, the drummer is good.

Having heard one album from both incarnations of the band I don't think it looks that bad. It sure is a bit more restrained, but the new album is quite good.

Either way they're awesome.Tongue

Yeah they are

but I really loved the unrestrained aspect. I just hope it doesnt start to sound more like other Zach Hill projects like Holy Smokes, The Ladies, etc, etc. (even though these are very good, old two piece Hella holds the title of my favorite. Maybe their later efforts will change my mind...and I hope so)

Christian Vander played over (Janik) Top for a large fraction of his career with Magma.

I see what you mean there. The Ladies sometimes sounds like one of those "indie" bands (albeit a really comlpex one). I surely wouldn't like Hella to take that direction either.

Speaking of Zach Hill, I was scared when I listened to Crime in Choir! I've never thought to hear Zach Hill play in such a normal way! I missed his personality (and playing) in that band.

^^^ Are there any streamable songs here in PA or even myspace where I can listen to Mr. Donati?  I've heard his name several times before like in Planet X, but haven't heard it yet.
