Pink Floyd v Genesis

Wow, I'm surprised Pink Floyd is beating Genesis so badly!  I like Genesis much better.

Same for me, that Pink Floyd is my favorite band, but Genesis is looking like a serious competitor given that I only know two Genesis albums, and even then only sparsely, while I know most of the Pink Floyd albums really well. And you do have to admit, the Genesis rock opera is better than the Floyd rock opera. Still, my vote to Floyd.

I think the best of Genesis was far better than the best of Floyd, and the worst of Genesis (80s onwards) still better than the worst of Floyd.

This poll wasn't as close as the YES v PINK FLOYD one & I have to say PINK FLOYD were/are much greater than GENESIS.

genisis has maybe 2 good songs

Pink Floyd, but I've been listening to them for a lot longer. I've just picked up 2 Genesis albums in the past few weeks and it's really good but I don't think it matches Pink Floyd at their peak.

I like what you are saying about song structure, but I can't agree with you on melody, either instrumentally or vocally.

PF's melodies and phrasing are nowhere near as wonderfully right as with Genesis. Genesis have provided far more in the way of 'feel good moments' for me, and are more interesting. Don't get me wrong I like PF too, quite a bit...smiles.

At the end of the day the result of this poll has little to do with who is the better band. There is no such thing as one piece of music being beter than another. It is just a matter of taste. I have seen polls where the result was the opposite and Genesis won over PF. There are always factors that play a part in swaying opinion and PF do have one major advantage over Genesis and that is that their sound does not date as much. However, if you asked me which complete range of albums I would prefer to be stranded on a dessert island with, then Genesis wins hands down.

Genesis are he all round package. Their songs are more complex and as such have more staying power in retaining my interest. They have more light and shade, mood changes, tempo changes, and emotion, and as such are more interesting. I could go on here but you get the picture. I'm not a fan of the 'pop' era, but even that would make a pleasant change on a dessert island...another string to their bow and I never thought I'd say that about the 'pop' era!

Another reason for PF leading in this poll could be that they did renew a lot of people's interest with a first class set at Live 8 last year. Perhaps the story will be differant if Genesis do get this reunion thing going!

^I really don't want to get into a "song for song" contest here. What I'm trying to say is that to me (and ofcourse this is subjective) the Genesis songs are on a much higher standard than the PF songs. Therefore I vote for Genesis, and also am somewhat sad to see that Genesis loses this "beauty contest" to PF

It hurts to see PF winning here from Genesis. PF is/was a great band. But c'mon Genesis in the '70 was pure genious! Where's the quality of Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show or Supper's Ready in the work of PF? I hear you muttering..Shine On You Crazy Diamond...or Dogs...and I have to admit they are good...but not as good as the allready mentioned Genesis tracks.  So for me it's clear: Genesis by a mile (did I mention The Musical Box, Fountain of Salmacis, The Knife......????)
