Porcupine Tree-Trains
Yes-Heart of the Sunrise
Yes-Close to the Edge (I dont like putting it in here without the rest of the album though)
Camel-Lady Fantasy
King Crimson-In the Court...
Pink Floyd-SoYcD (1-5) (maybe a little much?)
Radiohead-Paranoid Android
The Mars Volta-Roulette Dares

I'd replace "In The Court..." with "21st Century Schizoid Man" and "Roulette Dares" with "Drunkship Of Lanterns".

But, that's just my taste.

Good job, though.

Isn't it obvious?...

I'd also suggest CTTE, DSOTMSEBTP... you know... the usual picks.

There is no "best intro to prog." I was raised on Van Halen and Metallica. My introduction to prog was first Dream Theater at a very young age, then Rush, and soon after Yes and Pink Floyd. See how things change? If I would have grown up with jazz or perhaps classical music, I wouldn't have immediately enjoyed Dream Theater and Rush.

Try Porcupine Tree - In Absentia if they´re into pop/heavy rock
Jethro Tull - Aqualung if they´re into classic rock
Dream Theater - Scenes from a memory if they´re into Heavy Metal
Karmakanic - Wheel Of Life if they´re into jazz
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon if they´re random music listeners

The best intro to prog is easily In the Court of the Crimson King,  if whom ever doesn't like it on some level then that person will never like prog.

Yes - Fragile

or

Yes - The Yes Album

the albums aren't as progressive as Yes gets, but they really show a good deal of what prog is about. After listening to those two albums, i was inspired to delve into prog further and further.

I generally play people 'Awaken' by Yes as an intro, because many people seem to take to the track ...no wonder; it's superb!!
Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Camel
Genesis
Pink Floyd

I started with PINK FLOYD - ANIMALS

also with SANTANA - i know its not considered prog, but it belongs to the same period and could easily lead to prog.

Be careful to point out - with nerdy commentary - all the 'really good bits' as they come up in the music. Explain the concept of odd time signatures and state that anyone who doesn't like prog is a complete imbicile. Basically make them feel they will be regarded as more intelligent if they like prog. Tell them also they will be more attractive to women. By the time they work out that this is bullsh!t it will be too late and they'll be hooked..hopefully..

This is what NOT to do.

But it usually ends up happening anyway.
