Hello all. Sorry for yet another recommendations thread, but thats what this section is for right??
 
I want to dig a little deeper into prog. I'm not a total beginner but if you could recommend some less popular/more obscure bands that would fit my tastes that would be great!
 
Here is what I'm currently listening too: Supertramp - Crime of The Century, Klaatu - Their first one and Hope, ELP - Their first one and Brain Salad, Moody Blues - Childrens Children. Everything from Rush. I really like what I've heard from Gentle Giant too, I am getting Octopus in the next couple of days. I also really like what I've heard from Van Der Graaf Generator, but don't own any of their albums yet.
 
So as you see, some fairly known bands. Except maybe Klaatu. What I think these bands have in common is the ability to "go all out" and experiment but also have the ability to settle down and write good beautiful mellow tunes. And they all have great singers IMO. So I guess thats what I'm looking for.
 
Please recommend something like these bands please Smile

King Crimson must surely be a glaring ommission in the list above?
As there seems to be a leaning towards the more melodic in that list, perhaps I could suggest 'Renaissance'?
Also possibly 'Pocupine Tree', where you simply just can't go wrong.
And of course Tori Amos, whose absence on this site will surely see the collaborators roast in hell Tongue

Get VDDG. And Taal. Nobody talks about Taal anymore! I guarantee you will like Taal, I don't care what you have to do to get Skymind.

You MUST get VDGG - and Pete Hammill's solo stuff, too.
 
I don't get the Tori Amos in-joke, but I wouldn't get any of Tori Amos' music either, if I were you.
It's not that I can't find worth in anything, it's just that I can't find worth in enough.

Talking of obligatory recommendations, better do my PENDRAGON plug while I'm here. If nothing else check out PURE - awesome's an overused word on this site, but in this case it's fully justified.

From the list you show, i think you might like

Marillion
Script for a Jester's Tear (1983) 
Fugazi (1984)
 
And maby also (but a lot more "heavy")
The Mars Volta

Another great band, that most "new" to Prog often like,  from the classic period is Jethro Tull.
 
I would personaly start out with :
 
Heavy Horses (1978)
Aqualung (1971)
Songs from the Wood (1977)
 
If you like those, dig deeper with :
Minstrel in the Gallery (1975)
Thick as a Brick (1972)
Stormwatch (1979)
 
At this point you will know, if you should go on with older records, or new ones.

Since you already like ELP, you really should pick up Tarkus and Pictures at an Exhibition.

Porcupine Tree is fantastic, but go for the older stuff first. The Sky Moves Sideways, Signify, Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun. I don't really understand why so many people here on the Archives rave about In Absentia and Deadwing, they're easily PT's weakest albums. To me, PT haven't really been the same since Chris Maitland left and was replaced by Gavin Harrison although Fear of a Blank Planet was a step in the right direction and a return towards the PT of old.
With magic, you can turn a frog into a prince.
With science, you can turn a frog into a Ph.D. and you still have the frog you started with.

^I think MerryMaker would do best in ignoring Porcupine Tree + Pendragon and Marillion forever, and I defenatly agree that he should check out the real stuff first.

The smartest thing would be checking out some likable classics such as King Crimson: In the Court..., VdGG: He to H .... or PFM: Storia di un Minuto. No matter how much I love RIO, I wouldn't reccomend someone going directly from Supertramp and Klaatu to Henry Cow.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Well, there are quite a few people that do - actually, she might even get added one of these days. Hope that won't bother you too much...

Now, back to the topic at hand... If you (the thread starter) are looking for something with melody (as seems evident from your list in the original post), I'd suggest you try Caravan, and if you like them you can go for some more Canterbury (please refer to the subgenre description that you can find on the home page).

No mention of Genesis and Floyd, or are they just too obvious to bother with? Cant go wrong with Animals and Foxtrot at all though. Marillions first four albums are excellent.You might get a kick out of White Willow as well, try Sacrament and Storm Season first then the other three afterwards. Wobbler is also a nice to try.

Thank you all! I'm aware of Tull, Marilion (I dont remember right now, but the album that Kayleigh is one...I like them, but they sound too 80s and "sweet" some times...) Floyd and also Genesis, but not soo much, I haven't heard all of Genesis early albums, so will have to do myself the favour of picking up more of those.

I did a quick run to youtube and that Pavlovs Dog album sounds really good, I have added that to my list of "albums to get" Smile
