No.

They are excellent, and one of the best examples of prog, but not the best prog band ever.

As I see nobody has mentioned Van der Graaf Generator  6 albums:
- The least we can do
- H to He who am the Only One
- Pawn Hearts
- Godbluff
- Still Life
- World Record

Genesis are my second all time favourite band but in my opinion VdGG albums represent a real Peak of Rock.
Would you catch the final words of mine?

I personally feel that Rush is a better band than Genesis.  But then again my answer is bias since Rush is my favorite band in progressive rock.

Additionally, my favorite Genesis albums are Nursery Cryme and Selling England, with a nod to Wind and Wuthering.

in conclusion, Genesis is not the best prog band ever.

Trouble is you can use any manner of different criteria to justify your choice.

If we are going by any 6 album streak then I would choose this
2112
Farewell To Kings
Hemispheres
Permanent Waves
Moving Pictures
Signals

my second choice would be
The Yes Album
Fragile
Close To The Edge
Tales From Topographic Oceans
Relayer
Going For The One

and then
Foxtrot
Selling England By The Pound
Lamb
Trick of The Tail
Wind and Wuthering
And Then There Were Three
( I do actually prefer ATTWT over Nursery Crime)

in recent times

Stupid Dream
Lightbulb Sun
In Absentia
Deadwing
Fear Of A Blank Planet
The Incident

Van der graaf Generator:

1. Aerosol grey Machine
2. The least we do is weave to each other
3. H to he who am the only one
4. Pawn hearts
5. Godbluff
6. Still life
7. World record
8. The quiet zone / pleasure dome
9. Present
10. Trisector

Thats 10 awsome albums, so VdGG is the best prog band ever obviusly, since they realesed the longest string of perfect albums and actualy never realsed a singel bad album so far. Now we can close the thread. Tongue

And then to that we can add Peter Hammill's great solo career, that he had almost simultainiusly with his VdGG career:

1. Fools mate
2. Chameleon in the shadow of the night
3. The silent corners and empty stage
4. In camera
5. Nadirs big chanse
6. Over
7. The future now
8. PH7
9. A black box

Best band: VdGG. Best solo artis: Peter Hammill. Conclusion: PH is a freakin musical genius! Big smile

This is a toughie. I went with the second choice because yes, they had 6 incredible albums, and although bands peak higher than they did, no one band had such an incredible run without a few hiccups.

More and Obscured by Clouds are both nice interludes by I don't count them in Floyd's classic sequence.

1. Saucerful
2. Ummagumma
3. Atom Heart Mother
4. Meddle
5. Dark Side of the Moon
6. Wish You Were Here

against

1. ELP
2. Pictures
3. Tarkus
4. Trilogy
5. Brain Salad Surgery

But Ummagumma only really makes it because of the live component so Yessongs could be added to the Yes sequence.  Then again, no band has produced a trifecta of the quality of Foxtrot, SEBTP and The Lamb.

And I think i detect a bit of a resurgence of favour on this forum, and in the general press, for Emerson Lake and Palmer in recent months.
Thanks for taking the time to do this.
1. I choose Nursery Cryme
2. I'll take Foxtrot
3. Is absolutely impossible. I refuse to vote.
4. I have to go Lamb
5. Brain Salad Surgey
6? I guess Wish You Were Here lol
Well, there it is. (Amadeus)

I love Genesis, and was virtually bought up on them in my formative teenage years, so they will always hold a special place.

So, whilst they are not my favourite band, I don't think that the exceptionally high standard of that run of albums in a row will ever be matched by any other band.

I'd like to be proved wrong, thoughWink
This is my point. I'm not slamming any other bands. I love Floyd, ELP, each is unique! Nobody will ever make music as YES has.  Again, I point to you above. I don't think that string of albums can be topped!

As per poll. Please list comparable albums.

Answer: Yes

Not the group Yes but just "Yes" to the question.

I would put forward Tull. Their 12 studio albums after This Was i.e." Stand Up" and up to and including "A" IMHO  are better than  anything Genesis dished out. I would also put Gentle Giant ahead as well. Each to his/her own I suppose.

I have tried very hard to like Genesis; I have played them and played them but they just do not do "it" for me. May be one day some magic will happen.

The original 12 Tull studio albums, plus the superlative Living in the Past set certainly eclipses Genesis' output. But then I prefer Tull and you must prefer Genesis, or else you wouldn't have made this poll in the first place.

I would put Yes up against those very excellent Genesis albums. Starting with The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Relayer, Tales, Going for the One and then a fine addition with Tormato.

I would put the Yes Album up against Trespass (prediction: Yes wins)
Fragile against Nursery Chryme (prediction: this will be the tie breaker)
Close to the Edge against Foxtrot (Yes takes this one too)
Selling England by the Pound is a tough one so I'll use Going for the One and Tormato against that (but Genesis will probably still take this one)
and Tales from Topographic Oceans against Lamb Lies Down simply because they're both doubles (and Genesis will take the vote here too, leaving Fragile vs. Nursery to determine the outcome of this argument)

Breaking this 2-2 tie would be very difficult.

I love Genesis, I think they embody progressive rock, and when it comes down to it, are my favorite of the classics. I can't pick a favorite though. To many good bands.
