Topic: Genesis best Prog band ever? Posted: March 20 2011 at 18:08 |
Is there really any group out there that can match or beat the sounds produced on "Trespass", Nursery Cryme", Foxtrot", "Selling England by the Pound" & "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"?
As per poll. Please list comparable albums.

I really tried thinking of a band that released a string of 6 albums that are as timeless, definitive, and well.. awesome as these.
Lets just say it was hard.
But i have hope for modern music too

2nd option. But I know a better band than Genesis.Opeth!!!!Because Genesis are classic. And Opeth is the best band in the world. So,the classic is very different from the good.

King Crimson: Court, Lizard, Islands, Larks', Starless, Red. (those are 6)
Yes: Yes Album, Fragile, CTTE, Tales, Relayer. (those are 5, you actually listed 5 Genesis albums)
Pink Floyd: Meddle, Dark Side, Wish, Animals, Wall. (another 5)
Soft Machine: 2, 3, 6, 7, Bundles
Zappa: Hot Rats, Grand Wazoo, Waka/Jawaka, Over-Nite, One Size, Apostrophe, Roxy, Zappa in NYC, Sleep Dirt...and so on...
Conclusion: there are many of great 70s bands that can match Genesis' "Gold era".

Those are some of the most poorly constructed poll options I have ever seen on PA.
I do not think King Crimson is the best band ever, but I do not feel obligated to provide you with a "rebuttal".

Tull.
But Genesis would be second in my own personal Pantheon of Great Bands.

Yes - The Yes Album, Fragile, CTTE, TFTO, Relayer and GFTO top the Genesis offerings...but Genesis is a close second...

Yeah, this poll is ridiculous. The options make no sense.
If this was a decent poll, then I would point out the fact that I consider Yes to be a far better band then Genesis.
Edit: I don't mean to be rude, but the options here really don't make any sense.

It was a superb era, but I think Gentle Giant did.

I could list a huge many groups in PA's prog categories that I prefer to Genesis -- though I do love The Lamb. I don't want to do a laundry list, but I'll mention Magma, Art Zoyd, Mwandishi players, Tangerine Dream, Soft Machine, Univers Zero, Present, Can and Amon Duul II to start.

Pink Floyd has several albums that are better than the above mentioned Genesis albums but Genesis is still great.

I love Genesis too, but is it wrong that the Genesis obsession on this forum is starting to feel a little tedious to me?

The only Genesis album that moves me is 'Selling England.' I much prefer Yes and Floyd.

1st option, although I will not say there are, or were, bands better than Genesis, but there have certainly been those that are their equal. That was not an option, so the closest to my view is option #1. Others have listed some I consider equals: Yes, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Magma, dare I say ELP? Just look at the albums from the same era. No one band is the absolute best, no one artist is the absolute best. There are too many criteria, too many variations possible in the creation and performance of music. There is no fully objective standard to analyze and quantify that will place one above any of the others. Each of the bands in consideration could do things the others really could not.

READ THE POLL QUESTION NOT THE TOPIC !
Is there a band with a better string of 6 albums?
1. Yes, there is a better band etc.
My apologies on #3. It was supposed to continue ...But there may be in the future

I really figured that Floyd would have been the overwhelming response.
The Yes response I think falls a bit short. If you match up album to album.
