I've been playing the saxophone (tenor is my pref) from a very young age because I liked jazz, but lately, I've really wanted to play keyboard instruments. I did the guitar for a while, but didn't enjoy it as much as the sax.

It wasn't a prog band that made me want to play, but I was really influenced by Jose Passilas from Incubus. One of the best modern rock drummers out there (I always thought they had art-rock leanings though)
But their 3rd album Make Yourself made me want to continue on with the skins.

When i first head DT at the age of 8, I instantly wanted to play Drums. I heard Portnoy and I thought "Wow, i want to be just like this guy."
When I started getting into other bands, like Yes, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and even Steve Vai, (Not that I think Vai is prog or anything) I started to drift towards the Guitar. I borrowed my Brothers guitar until i got my own and have been playing ever since. I still play drums every now and then, I havent lost all my love for it, but i'm more into guitar purely because you can create songs on a guitar, whereas on the drums pretty much all you can create is a beat or rythm.

No band or artist got me into playing,my family did.
My Mom played classical piano,all my older brothers played anything that had strings and my twin sisters play sax,trumpet,trombone,flute,piano,etc.
My Dad's passion was drums and percussion,so as a 5 year old kid I naturally gravitated to his drum kit.

Yeah, well i also didn't mention that it was just music that got me into playing an instrument.
My brother played guitar for a majority of his life, he encouraged me (very regularly) to play an instrument, mainly guitar.
It was a combination of the 2.

In my case was Dream Theater (Petrucci in particular) who made me pick my guitar, but Metallica (Kirk Hammet soloing in songs like One or Fade To Black) are guilty of my love for the guitar too.

In the move from classical piano to keyboard, it was Stevie Wonder and Higher Ground who inspired me the most, and Radiohead's Exit Music (From a Film) that got me to pick up an acoustic guitar.

STEVE HACKETT'S "FIRTH OF FIFTH" GUITAR SOLO (GENESIS - "SECONDS OUT") WAS MY REASON TO PLAY GUITAR AND SONGWRITING FOR SOME INSTRUMENTS.

I started playing drums when I was five due to my sister. I used to play a bunch of funk but ever since hearing images and words my style has almost changed overall. I still play a lot of funk but my fills are more busy.

Basically Chris Squire and Mahavishnu Orchestra compositions (Laird) made me start playing (or at least trying to play) bass.

Jeez, the folks on this site are so young. I actually picked up the drums from being influenced by Buddy Rich AND Max Roach.
The majority of you forumites weren't even born when I started playing.

I certainly picked up the guitar because of two reasons: the magic of the sound when I touched the strings of my elder brother's guitar and... well... Marc Bolan... but I definately got into Keyboards due to many good prog-players such as Mark Kelly, Tony Banks, Rick Wakeman... too many to mention

Believe it or not, it was the first Klaatu album that made me really start getting into music. It wasn't long after that, that I was turned on to Yes and Pink Floyd.
It was Howe and Gilmour that made me pick-up the guitar back in 1977 and I've been playing ever since.

Dan Hawkins (The Darkness) inspired me to pick up the guitar. Since then guitarists like Steve Rothery, Steve Hackett and Andy Latimer have been a huge influence on my playing style.

Ive been meaning to buy a cheap electric guitar for a long time now, either that or 3 or 4 old, used keyboards so I can mess around with the electronics... I'd rather get a guitar though...
Robert Fripp, Hackett, and Gary Green would probably be the biggest influences making me want to play guitar... I love Fripp's and Hackett's styles but I like Gary Green purely because he brings some bluesy rock riffs and solos to Gentle Giant when their music is usually... unusual... haha. Two good examples I can think of are the solos on 'Peel the paint' and on 'The House, The Street, The Room' (or is it on 'Wreck'? or 'Plain truth'? I cant remember!!! AAAAAAAAH! I just listened to the damn thing last night!! Im almost 80% certain its on 'tHtStR' though'
anyways! All three of em are great... I guess Howe is good too.. but I am certainly more strongly influenced by those three... NOW... to buy a guitar. .. .
