Dream Theater made me wanted to play guitar, bass and piano. But the piano is not cheap... neither is the bass so I got an acoustic guitar instead for 20$. Now I'm thinking on buying a bass and maybe a piano also.

To be honest I dont think there is anyone persone that made me want to pick up bass (lot of bassists here tonight). My uncle was a good bass player in a folk band I got his old Vox, but never seemed to use it much, if at all. Since then though I have always listened to the bass on an album and the likes of John Myung, Tony Levin, Pete Trewaves have shown me what is capable on this instrument. Last November I bought a 6 string and have been taking lessons for it, but I guess there's a number of reasons why I icked up the bass.

I had given up piano and drums just to focus on my singing. Then I discovered Opeth and Mikael inspired to pick up the guitar. Best choice in my life!

Let's see... there are other bands, non-prog, that got me to pick up guitar.

Eh, I guess mainly Rush got me to pick up guitar. The album 2112, I think really did prog to me.

Yea prog can be done to you.

But guitarist like Steve Howe, Fripp, Steve Hackett, David Gilmour, John McLaughlin, ETC have inspired my playing more than Alex Lifeson, although he is the one who got me to pick it up in the first place.

No band made me want to pich up the guitar...
This one time (in bandcamp jejeje) all my freinds and I where in a sort of party and some girl brought a guitar and played some accords...then a boy took the guitar and did some stuff also...and then another one also and before I knew everyone knew at least one thing on the guitar...also there was one friend of mine (who is now the bass player in my band) who knew a bit more than the rest and the girls where really impressed...so I said to myself "sh*t, girls dig this...I better get one"LOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOL
It never really got me any tail...but it introduced me to good music!

Been a piano fiend since before I even listend to prog, Tony Banks and Mike Pinder inspired me to write prog music and play like a prog master.

I have recently started to get into guitar as a real instrument for me, and this is because of almost all prog guitarists that I love, especially Steve Hackett and Robert Fripp.

I picked up the flute about 5 months ago and got real good real quick, thanks to my vast knowledge of music because of piano and prog.  This was taken up by me because of Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull and how much they kick ass.

I play drums now as well thanks to Bill Bruford and the classic Buddy Rich, and my dadClap!!

I am taking up as many instruments as possible once i get outta college, though.

The SITAR is next and thats thanks to some stuff my The Moody Blues and Strawbs (Fingertips)! Beautiful!

I borrowed a flute from a girl I know and got some information about how to play on the internet. Then I learned that ingenious flute-playing by Latimer in Camels' "Spirit of the Water". I'm thinking about starting to play. I just need to practice some more guitar first.

Yeah, i know that one, Camel were amazing, although I do prefer bardens on piano alone without the flute on that one, much more moving considering hes gone...

After a few months i can blast out any ian anderson solo practically, its really not all that hard, getting the tongue roll through the flute was difficult at first, because I just wanted to be good so quick.

But after about 5 months, I am better than all of my teachers, and all the kids in jazz band and orchestra.

Prog just owns everything.

After receiving Six Wives as a Christmas present when I was 16, I fell in love with the analog synthesizer.  I had played classical piano for years, and was somewhat proficient, but the synthesizer opened up sonic opportunities I needed to explore.

It wasn't a prog band that made me want to play, but I was really influenced by Jose Passilas from Incubus.  One of the best modern rock drummers out there (I always thought they had art-rock leanings though)

But their 3rd album Make Yourself made me want to continue on with the skins.

When i first head DT at the age of 8, I instantly wanted to play Drums. I heard Portnoy and I thought "Wow, i want to be just like this guy."

When I started getting into other bands, like Yes, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and even Steve Vai, (Not that I think Vai is prog or anything) I started to drift towards the Guitar. I borrowed my Brothers guitar until i got my own and have been playing ever since. I still play drums every now and then, I havent lost all my love for it, but i'm more into guitar purely because you can create songs on a guitar, whereas on the drums pretty much all you can create is a beat or rythm.

No band or artist got me into playing,my family did.

My Mom played classical piano, all my older brothers played anything that had strings and my twin sisters play sax, trumpet, trombone, flute, piano, etc.

My Dad's passion was drums and percussion,so as a 5 year old kid I naturally gravitated to his drum kit.

Yeah, well i also didn't mention that it was just music that got me into playing an instrument.

My brother played guitar for a majority of his life, he encouraged me (very regularly) to play an instrument, mainly guitar.

It was a combination of the 2.

I certainly picked up the guitar because of two reasons: the magic of the sound when I touched the strings of my elder brother's guitar and... well... Marc Bolan... but I definately got into Keyboards due to many good prog-players such as Mark Kelly, Tony Banks, Rick Wakeman... too many to mention

Believe it or not, it was the first Klaatu album that made me really start getting into music. It wasn't long after that, that I was turned on to Yes and Pink Floyd.
It was Howe and Gilmour that made me pick-up the guitar back in 1977 and I've been playing ever since.

Ive been meaning to buy a cheap electric guitar for a long time now, either that or 3 or 4 old, used keyboards so I can mess around with the electronics... I'd rather get a guitar though...

Robert Fripp, Hackett, and Gary Green would probably be the biggest influences making me want to play guitar... I love Fripp's and Hackett's styles but I like Gary Green purely because he brings some bluesy rock riffs and solos to Gentle Giant when their music is usually... unusual... haha. Two good examples I can think of are the solos on 'Peel the paint' and on 'The House, The Street, The Room' (or is it on 'Wreck'? or 'Plain truth'? I cant remember!!! AAAAAAAAH! I just listened to the damn thing last night!! Im almost 80% certain its on 'tHtStR' though'

anyways! All three of em are great... I guess Howe is good too.. but I am certainly more strongly influenced by those three... NOW... to buy a guitar. ..  .

I picked up drums/percussion at 11.  I didn't have an influence, until I discovered Neil Peart in 1994.  I then started writing songs in 1995, influenced by Richard Marx, Rush, Journey and Melissa Etheridge.  I'm taking guitar lessons at the moment, inspired by Alex Lifeson, John Petrucci and Eddie Van Halen.  I gotta add; Mikael Akerfeldt and Steve Wilson are influencing me, both for their great songs and emotionality.

I took up alto saxophone in 5th grade, before I discovered prog. As I remember, I was impressed with the Average White Band's "Pick Up the Pieces" and with Bobby Keys, who played tenor sax for the Rolling Stones. Alto sax was the only offering at the time, although I would have preferred tenor.

My grandparents tryed to discourage me, saying  sax was too masculine and that I should pick a "nice" instrument such as the flute or clarinet-lol!

These days, I'm obsessed with mellotrons and would love to learn to play one although I've never played any keyboards.

I was beating away Ina-Gadda-Da-Vida on my Dungeons and Dragons books and then when I got a set and it was Ian Paice and John Bonham. That was until I remebered this Tom Sawyer tune I heard on the radio. That was it then. I was a Peart freak after that. I wore out 2 A Farewell to Kings tapes practicing to them.  Now I still play Rush, DT, Synphony X, Dali's Dillemma, Shadow Gallery, Yes (a little, not much of a jazz player), and Porcupine Tree to name a few.

David Gilmour was the first person who inspired me to play guitar. The problem was that, although most of what he plays isn't technically difficult, it's well nigh impossible to play with the emotion and intensity he displays on (for example) the solos on Comfortably Numb. 25 years later I'm still trying!

It was really inspiring for me to see a bass in the forefront of a band's sound instead of a guitar. Still haven't even tried to learn to play any Magma yet, because no-one tabs it and it's insane!

I love each and every instrument but you can't do much if you play a violin, flute or trumpet alone. That's why I picked a polyphonic instrument. When I heard ELP or Wakeman I thought that it would be great to play those solos and those extended complex pieces. Sadly I found that these guys were real monsters and although I managed to replicate some of the solos I was far from playing like them so I took it easy and started all over with easier mainstream songs. Then I found that it was fun to play keys or guitar while you're singing because you can make a song alone. When I played flute or violin I needed someone else to accompany me. In conclusion, the keyboard is what I like the most, you can do all the chords, play fast and sing along. Furthermore it has other sounds sampled so you can do lots of things. In fact, many of the newer prog bands like Ars Nova and Minimun Vital (if I dont mistake) use sampled keyboards to mimic other instruments with good effect. However I'd like to get my hands into a real piano or harpsichord, it has a magic of its own.

Same here. Peart and the first serious drum fill of 2112. I heard it and said to myself "I gotta play that!"

Funny thing, when I first heard Portnoy, I told myself, "that is a case of overplaying." Then I realized I was told the same thing early on by other drummers that Peart over-played. Plus ca change!

Good call - if you're going to be inspired, be inspired by the best!

Personally, it was a combination of Ken Hensley, Thjis Van Leer & Tony Banks who made me crave a Hammond Organ; over the years (bear in mind, this is since about 1971), other players such as Greg Rolie, Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Jon Lord, Hugh Banton and a host of others came at me from the prog/rock scene, plus players like Charles Earland, Joey DiFrancesco (probably spelt wrong) & Jimmy Smith from the jazz side...

In the end, I gave in & bought a 1971 Hammond L122 & Leslie 145; slowly (oh, so slowly!), I am learning to play (not easy to begin a completely new discipline at the age of 43 ) - I'll never be on the stage, but hey, who cares? I got me a Hammond!

When I was six my father came to me and said: "You have to learn piano". So I went and did. Very bad. Classical stuff. My female teacher was an opera singer with huge lungs. For 10 years I followed her lessons. With 16 I gave up. Then I started fingering on the piano trying to play SANTANA. - Then I lost my interest. - 6 years later after study I bought out of the blue a Roland 100 Synthie System with patch cables and all that accessories for a very big chunk of money. It was a mono instrument. - From that moment on I was into music - thinking of Rick Wakeman and players like him. I learned drums, a bit guitar, bass, trumpet, flute, harmonica. Now I find myself composing in my freetime on MIDI just for fun. - Needles to say that I appreciate very much that my daddy once came and said: "You have to learn piano". I was not keen at all those days. And he was severe man.

When I first started playing electric guitar, the one guitar player who could send chills up my spine was Jeff Beck, particularly the "Blow By Blow" album . When I started studying classical guitar, John Williams was always the standard I aimed for and I still feel that technically speaking he is probably one of the finest musicians on earth.

So, explain to me how this thread is still in the Prog Lounge while the Prog/Non Prog thread that is specifically about Prog music has been moved to the Non-Music Prog section.

Well, okay (are you the only mod around, Tony?), even though this thread has been knocking around the Prog Lounge since May 13th - but why on earth was the other thread moved?

If it slips off page one then it isnt a thread that is likely to be in the "eye of the storm." If,however, someone had posted that they started to play guitar after listening to AOR Radio Stations.....Tongue

Not as embarassing as me...back in my "follow the crowd" phase when I had just started listening to music, then I wanted to play every "punk" song that there was. Trouble was, I realized quickly that they were all incredibly easy. Then I bought "...And Justice For All" and it totally blew me away. So, in essence it was Metallica who made me want to start taking guitar seriously, but it wasn't until Dream Theater that I really decided that I needed to get more technically proficient. And after I bought "Wish You Were Here" (relatively recently after I got Octavarium, my first DT album) I found that I wanted to play like Gilmour as well.

Nine years ago, my grade six music teacher made me pick up the bass. A few years later, Patrick Djivas made me switch to fretless.Tongue

The guys who inspired me to pick up the guitar weren't actually prog musicians (the dudes from Powderfinger...Embarrassed), but it was the marvellous Mr. John McLaughlin who inspired me to start playing fusion and experimental stuff. Ian Anderson has also planted the idea of learning the flute in my head - the solo in "Cross-Eyed Mary" is excellent. I also played piano and bass before learning the guitar, but that was before I discovered prog.

I picked up bass very nonchalantly back in 5th grade for our school's classical orchestra thing, but took to it like a duck to water. Now it's the most important thing in my life.

Sad to admit it, but I picked up bass because I liked Roger Waters' lyrics. He played bass, and I thought, "bass is the ultimate slackers' instrument - I can be in a band, write lyrics, and sing without actually having to be a musician - all I have to do is play bass! and it's so easy too!". But at the time I only really liked Pink Floyd (obviously) and The Wall. About two months into learning I introduced myself to Yes (through this site!) and other prog, and became more interested in music, solely for musics' sake (as opposed to being a vehicle for lyrics). So, without thinking really, I strived for a more complex style of bass playing (inspired by Chris Squire). This shows by the fact that after I complete the bass primer book, the very first song I took on was the entirety of Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick Pt. 1"...and I mastered it only 8 months after I picked up bass!
So really, while I stand by the statement that bass is for slackers, it is so underrated because too often it is left in the hands of non-musicians. So really my goal now is to prove the bass can be utilized melodically - much like my heroes Chris Squire of Yes and Rockette Morton of the Magic Band set out to do.

Strange how I began playing bass, which quickly became guitar. Father just brought one home one day (he sells them). I sat staring at it for many weeks and slowly taught myself the trade. Cream and hendrix sucked me into the blues, but yes and king crimson kicked them out of the mix and lead me off toward the prog horizon.

The first time I heard the MASTER drumming in "Master (sic!) Builder" I decided to learn to play drums myself. Moerlen's drumming on "You" is unsurpassed by any drummer, and "Master Builder" simply blows you away.

I play drums now as well thanks to Bill Bruford and the classic Buddy Rich, and my dad[IMG]height=17 alt=Clap src="http://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif" width=18 align=absMiddle>!!

One of my biggest inspirations is Jerry Garcia. I know i'll probably never play like he did, but whenever i listen to the Grateful Dead, i think to myself "That's how a guitar should be played".

Funny anecdote: i initially made a typo writing that aboce sentence, i misspelt "how" as "howe". Coincidence? I think not... :)
