4 stars World Record completed the second trio of the 'classic' Van der Graaf Generator albums from the 70's (and sadly last one with David Jackson on sax), but sound rawer and rockier compared to Godbluff and Still Life, with some really good jamming in places and of course all of the usual VDGG twists and hooks throughout. The first three tracks are great examples of this and shows the band in a very energetic form. The centerpiece is 'Meurglys III', a track 20 minutes long, that takes it even further in it's intricacies for the first 13 minutes, before interestingly enough segueing into a reggae jam in the end. Might throw some people off at that point, but the whole song possesses a a great groove anyway. Wondering is one of their best and epic ballads, with a long and grand conclusion part and some really strong vocals from Hammill. A very solid album overall and the band would keep going in a similar direction on their next project 'The Quiet Zone / Pleasure Dome', but with shorter songs. Both very much recommended.
