3 stars Behind Petroleum Falcon hides American multi-instrumentalist Chris Livella. He runs his own ZSXI Recordings, through which he made available the first album of Petroleum Falcon ''Breaking the second law'' in 2010.This work was only offered in digital format with Livella keeping also a small stock of CD's.The compositions cover a period of 10 years, three out of which are covers from soundtracks on cult films.

The music of Livella can be defined as all instrumental Heavy/Art Rock, which has little to do with the golden era of prog music, instead it has more of a futuristic style with plenty of loops and effects next to the natural sound of instruments. With a good balance between electric, laid-back soundscapes and heavier excursions, Livella attempts to offer an original sound, which draws influences from Soundtracks, PINK FLOYD, PORCUPINE TREE and maybe a touch of KING CRIMSON during the more demanding numbers.First half of the album is exclusively dedicated to contemporary guitar-driven Instrumental Rock, characterized by atmospheric textures, punchy guitar rhythms and clever use of electronic sounds and electric distortions with a generally Heavy Rock attitude, occasionally showered by psychedelic vibes and even some Latin-spiced inspirations. The dramatic mood of Livella's instrumentals keep going on during the second half, which is still powered by deep grooves, obscure solos and modern technology in effects, but this round contains also some discreet keyboard lines.I can hear some organ runs in a couple of tracks, while there is also at least one piece with a Mellotron sampler. His two farewell compositions, which clock at over 10 minutes, show a good ability by Livella on acoustic and dreamy explorations, but they are rather overstretched.

Modern, instrumental Prog Rock with emphasis on the flexible guitar playing.A good example of the genre's new basics with interesting soundscapes and often a very powerful sound.Recommended.
