If the avatar is a picture of a person (edit: not to be confused with A Person), then I usually imagine that the person I'm replying to looks like the picture.

I get confused with Paul McGann all the time. Well, an older, fatter, uglier version of Paul McGann anyway.

(and now I'm randomly answering other points in this thread) I've had this avatar for about six years now, I was very into Spock's Beard when I started here and asked a buddy of mine to draw what I would look like, if I was a Catfish.
