There have been hundreds of opinions about which bands should/shouldn't
be included in the archives, sparked off by the inclusion of bands like
Radiohead, Queen, etc. Bands such as these have some progressive
material in their output - but how progressive is "progressive enough"? Rather than arguing the merits of including/excluding bands from the archives, why not just let the masses decide? Adding a five-star rating for the "progressiveness" of each album reviewed might solve this problem (in addition to the current five-star "quality" rating). The progressiveness rating should be a direct comparison between bands in the same sub-genre - for example, a five-star album in the art-rock category would only indicate that the album is very progressive when compared to other art-rock albums. This would eliminate arguments about what is considered "progressive enough" for inclusion in the archives. A new rating system would also address the situation where some bands, over the course of a long career, have changed direction from/to a more progressive style - these bands would have some albums that rate as five-star progressive, and others that rate as one or two. The average rating of all the band's albums could be used to provide an overall "progressiveness" rating for the band, which would at least give some indication of what to expect from their music. The result would be that bands such as Queen may end up with a high overall rating for "quality" (because they produce great music), but a much lower rating for "progressiveness" (because they produce a lot of pop), with albums that range from quite progressive (such as Queen II) to not progressive at all (such as The Works). |

hmmm.... sound logic, not a bad idea. I don't know how much extra work on the collaborator's part this would take, though. And would people actually judge an album fairly, or just rate their favorite bands super high and trash the ones they dislike just for the sake of having "their" band on the top of the list? But maybe I'm just to pessimistic about human nature. ------------- Arguing on the internet is a lot like the special olympics - even if you win, you're still retarded. |
